It’s that time of the year again: New Year’s Resolutions!
I’m really big on goals. Committing to a task, working through it, being accountable, achieving something big. Book deals, new stores? No problem. Keeping the house organized? Can’t. Do. It.
It’s so convenient to be able to blame your mother, but, in this case, I can’t. Because her house is perfect all the time. Actually, we joke about our opposite “organization styles.” When you walk in her house, it’s totally clutter free. But open the refrigerator? It gets a little dicey. (Although, that’s mostly my dad…)
I, on the other hand, have a pantry full of matching, labeled jars that contain all of our food. Not a bag or box or unlatching container in sight. But I can’t seem to keep the mail off of the kitchen counter or all of the laundry put away. I think it’s like having a little reprieve. When the day feels a little hectic, I can open a drawer and it’s tidy and everything is in its label-maker designated place. And, gosh, wouldn’t it feel good if the entire house was like that?
Thank goodness there’s a new year for everything because, man, oh man, could we brush up on our organization. And the kitchen, what seems to be the catch-all, black hole, center of the messes, is a good place to start.
See how lovely this looks? A little cutting board on the counter. Nothing else. Just totally streamlined and spacious. (And that awesome brass!)
Now, of course, the glass cabinets are one place where Mom and I both excel. At home, that’s where I keep the stuff I never use…
At the beach… I don’t know. We both just love keeping things looking perfect at the beach. Maybe it’s the fresh air or something!
Fresh stems of flowers or branches are a motivating factor for me — especially in the kitchen.
It’s like, somehow, something beautiful and fresh punctuates the space, making us want to keep everything looking just so.
Plus it’s a good excuse to keep fresh flowers around, and who wouldn’t want that?
Resolution 2: Plant more fresh flowers in the yard!
This is such a cool office space right in the kitchen. Mom has an office in her kitchen, and keeps it beautifully organized. I have a separate office, but, somehow, manage to keep that super tidy. I think it’s because I was always good with keeping my homework in order. Same thing, right?
The importance of great kitchen storage really can’t be overstated…
And this is great kitchen storage.
Big drawers are the absolute best!
We have these spices at the beach! And they are perfectly arranged. And all of the looseleaf teas are in lovely little matching containers as well… Now to take that magic and spread it to absolutely everything else!
Here’s hoping that 2015 is my year to conquer! Do you have any big goals for this year?
