We are so excited to have one of our favorite bloggers, Doreen Creede from, Style Maniac and a few of her friends, on Design Chic today with tips for creating the perfect Mother’s Day Brunch.

What makes a party truly special? To me, it’s not the amount of money you spend, it’s the amount of thought.  Taking the time to truly think about what would delight the senses and touch the hearts of your guests elevates entertaining from basic food + drink formula to enchanting moment that becomes a cherished memory.

My inspiration for this table was two women who love color, style, books, beaches, art, family, lively conversation – and each other.  Sound like any women you know?
Beth & Kristy, our favorite mother/daughter blogging duo, embody that smart and stylish spirit, which is one reason we all love visiting the beautiful online home they have created here at Design Chic.  As loyal Design Chic readers, I imagine you each share many of these same loves with your mom, sister, daughter or friend.
We hope the tips and pics of this Books & Brunch table setting — one of four created in a collaboration of myself (Doreen Creede, author of Style Maniac), artist Aubrie Costello, plant-based chef and herbalist Jen Capozzi, and photographer Brae Howard — inspire you to create a fun and joyful Mother’s Day (or birthday or just-because) gathering that captures the special bond you share with the women you love. — xoxo Doreen

Recipes & Tips

Books & Brunch:  Kristy’s novels add smart style to a table setting — and make the perfect gift for mom Beth!

Aubrie Costello offers her Silk Graffiti art
as custom commissions and prints.

Instead of wrapping gifts, we used them as part of the table setting.  What better gift to give a proud mama than advance copies of your own novels?

(Of course, with their pretty covers, the official copies of Dear Carolina and Lies & Other Acts of Love would beautify your table — and library shelves — as well.)

The art print also serves as both gift and décor. With her Silk Graffiti art, Aubrie Costello encourages you to dig deep for words and setting with true meaning.  Like Beth & Kristy, Aubrie and her mom Margie love the beach. For this installation, Aubrie ripped silk into strips, then “tagged” a phrase onto a dune fence near her mom’s shore home, a place of connection and relaxation for both women.

What would your phrase be and where would you put it?

A mix of china adds interest and freshness to a table, and costs less than a matched set.  Here Doreen combined her great-grandmother’s vintage white plates with bargain finds from HomeGoods, colorful Pantone Universe espresso cups (used to serve tea, jam and honey) and Jonathan Adler’s zebra coasters (used as dishes).  The little creamer and sugar is from Doreen’s own childhood tea set – isn’t it adorable?  (UNCOVER MORE of Doreen’s entertaining and table setting tips on Style Maniac.)

Gorgeous to look at, delicious to eat, easy to make — the food for this party happens to be good for you, too.Inspired by her own journey from sickness to health, private plant-based chef and herbalist Jen Capozzi uses the whole plant to help the whole body, and eschews gluten and sugar, but never at the expense of taste.

The appetizers shown here — Sliced Cucumber w/ Goat Cheese + Radishes and Quartered Stone Fruit Stuffed w/ Goat Cheese + Topped w/ Walnuts, Honey, Cinnamon + Sea Salt — are assembled more than cooked, and could be served for brunch, lunch, tea or cocktail hour.  Homemade Sconces and Rhubarb Hibiscus Jam take a bit more time, but are worth it for their unique, deep flavors.(GET THE RECIPES: Visit Jen’s BarlumeApothecary website for recipes, and find out how her journey to heal her own rheumatoid arthritis led to helping others find a path to healing.)

We’ve all had it happen at family gatherings:  the same topics discussed over and over.  Spark new conversation with a thoughtful selection of books strewn across the table.  Provocative, nostalgic, whimsical:  curate a selection and see where the conversation leads.  Mom’s stories may surprise you!
In her wedding and portrait photography, Brae Howard captures
the small details and deep emotions that make up the special moments of our lives.
