Back to school is still one of my favorite times of the year. Maybe it was because I always loved school. From preschool right on up to grad school, I was always excited to buy new school supplies, get back on a schedule, learn something new. I think it’s safe to say that my child is taking after me on that point. (Except that he didn’t want to pick out his own back-to-school clothes. He actually may not even be mine…)
When I asked my almost five-year-old son if he was nervous for school to start–it is his first time going past noon, after all–he said, “Mom, I’m scared of pretty much nothing. Except lions.”
Words to live by right there. I think something about becoming a parent makes you scared of pretty much everything. Including lions. That’s a pretty legit fear.
Being responsible for a whole other human being’s life is a big responsibility and everything suddenly seems important, every decision scrutinized. I have a whole new respect for my parents!
Do you know what shouldn’t be scary?
Why, decorating your home, of course!
(Which isn’t to say that I wasn’t terrified when decorating my first house. I was. Had no idea what to do.)
But when you see a home like this gorgeous one by Frederick Spitzmiller, how it all comes together, how the details just meld and mold like they were always meant to be this way, it doesn’t really look all that scary.
When what you love–and, hopefully, your favorite design blog!–are there to guide you, the process becomes much less overwhelming and suddenly seems a lot simpler.
Because, when you truly love something, it can’t help but seem at home in your home.
And when you truly love someone, you have to let them go out into the world.
When they’re ready, and the sun is shining and you know in your heart you made the best decision you could, it starts to seem a little less scary.
If there are geese, that’s just a bonus. No lions, mind you. But ducks are okay. Will says cheetahs are okay too. Because they look like cats so you can play with them. On second thought, maybe I’d better keep him home a little longer…
