Exclusive Peek Inside a Lake Martin, Alabama Home by Susan Ferrier

Good morning, chic readers! Do we ever have a treat for you today. We are so excited to give you a first look at a stunning Lake Martin, Alabama home, designed by Susan Ferrier, one of the leading interior design talents in the southeast and beyond, and David Baker of Tippet Sease Baker Architecture, featured in this month’s Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles.

Elizabeth Ralls, editor in chief of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, describes how this duo “thoughtfully designed each room in the house based on its relationship with the surrounding lake” to create a getaway that was the perfect fit for the magazine’s May issue, whose theme was “the intersection of cozy, contemporary design with escapist appeal.”

While the interiors are stunning, the setting is equally as impressive. The home is surrounded by the lake on three sides, and, Ferrier said, “the effect is a total immersion of the nature and the lake throughout the interiors.”

The juxtaposition of luxe and low-key, dark and light, texture and a touch of whimsy, create a getaway that is, in the words of Ralls, “decidedly glam.” Ralls said that Ferrier’s “best-of-both-world’s mentality” created a space that was also clean and soothing.

Like the other homes in this issue, this Alabama getaway proves that, “destination design doesn’t have to be cliché,” said Ralls.

This home is absolutely anything but. It is an inviting gathering space that is also very much of the moment, and, as Ralls said, “genuinely exudes that sense of warmth and hospitality that Southerners are widely known for.”

For Ferrier, “This was always a story about the best way for a family to be together on this beautiful point that reaches into the lake.” And that shows at every turn.

“It’s the perfect summer home,” Ferrier said. “The goal was for the water to be the last thing you see right before you shut your eyes at the end of a fun day on the water or for a well-deserved afternoon nap.”

What could possibly be better than that?

The latest issue of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, which Susan Ferrier calls, “a leader in the design community,” hits stands (and mailboxes!) today. For more on this stunning Alabama home, visit Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

We don’t know about you, but kitchens are some of our favorite spots in the home, and we love seeing what’s new and what’s next–but also what traditions are still firmly in tact. Because Southern design is always a little bit about tradition. Even in the kitchen.

4. Dark painted cabinets. We think of ourselves as being drawn toward light and bright, but we’re loving dark painted cabinets. Gray and navy are our favorites.

5. Mixing and matching. Who says the kitchen has to be all or nothing? Wood cabinets and painted islands are the best of both worlds.

6. Subway tile and white marble. Our old standbys are sticking around!

Here’s What’s Next from the Murphy Women:

From internationally bestselling author and “rising star of Southern fiction” (Mary Alice Monroe, New York Times bestselling author) Kristy Woodson Harvey comes the third novel in her Peachtree Bluff series, in which a secret threatens the tight-knit bond between a trio of sisters and their mother.

With the man of her dreams back in her life and all three of her daughters happy, Ansley Murphy should be content. But she can’t help but feel like it’s all a little too good to be true.

Meanwhile, youngest daughter and actress Emerson, who is recently engaged and has just landed the role of a lifetime, seemingly has the world by the tail. Only, something she can’t quite put her finger on is worrying her—and it has nothing to do with her recent health scare.

When two new women arrive in Peachtree Bluff—one who has the potential to wreck Ansley’s happiness and one who could tear Emerson’s world apart—everything is put in perspective. And after secrets that were never meant to be told come to light, the powerful bond between the Murphy sisters and their mother comes crumbling down, testing their devotion to each other and forcing them to evaluate the meaning of family.

With Kristy Woodson Harvey’s signature charm, wit, and heart, The Southern Side of Paradise is another masterful Peachtree Bluff novel that proves she is a “Southern writer with staying power” (Booklist).

House Tour: Alys Beach Retreat

Home of Interior Philosophy Co-Owner

Even though it may not officially be fall yet, Labor Day always feels like the end of summer–to us, anyway.

We are always sad for the end of summer, with its carefree beach days and long, lazy boat hours. Of course, fall has plenty of its own charms–football season, boots, pumpkin spice lattes… (In case you haven’t heard, they’re back!!)

Even still, we’re already dreaming of Spring Break!

For this year’s late April Spring Break, we think the weather–and the beauty–of Alys Beach will do quite nicely.

To facilitate our Spring Break dreaming we wanted to take a look around this fabulous Alys Beach home.

The think we love most about this 30A enclave–besides its pristine white sand beaches and clear blue water, of course–is its soothing, uniform palette.

This beautiful home builds on the exquisite creams and browns and neutrals of the chic beach town’s exterior, making the entire thing feel cohesive.

Unexpected accessories lend a touch of the exotic and a bit of the British Colonial to the home’s overall feel.

Every room–even the bathroom–is set up to take advantage of the breathtaking view that lies beyond.

And despite this home’s upscale elegance, nothing feels too precious.

It’s the kind of place where sandy feet can tread and memories can grow.

It will still be weeks before we pack up our bathing suits for the winter and pull out the boots, months before the winter doldrums have time to cast their shadow and sink in.

All the while, we’ll feel happy and light knowing that another April, another Spring Break, and the promise of the sunny skies and stunning landscape of Alys Beach are just around the corner!

Thanks so much for stopping by today, friends! We always love it when you do!

10 Patios for Relaxing in Style this Summer

While I still love to celebrate my birthday for, well, the entire month, like any normal person, with dinners and wine with friends and trips and presents and too much cake, after a fun, fun, fun summer of lots of events and tons of guests and just the right amount of sun and salt and sand (because there’s never enough, is there?) I think what I’d like most for my birthday is to sit on my front porch.

It’s a pretty boring and simple request, but if there’s any time to reflect on your front porch, a birthday is the time to do it.

I insisted the cake on Friday and present opening on Saturday also take place outside because even though it’s hard for presents to get better, they actually are even better with a sunset in the background and a perfect summer breeze.

I love my porch very much, but it could certainly take some pointers from these gorgeous patios!

House Tour: A Character-Filled Oasis

Oasis stone house

Charm. That’s the word that comes to mind when considering this fabulous Atlanta home designed by the talented Meridy King. Incredible architectural details, eclectic style and a landscape plan to write home create a beautiful oasis amidst the city life.

office oasis

The perfect mix of antique and modern, this is the kind of office that is full of inspiration–and perfect for meeting clients!

dining room oasis

A round dining table is one of our favorite things. Especially in a square dining room, it is so chic and allows for conversation in a way that other shapes simply don’t.

rustic

Rustic touches are always welcome.

modern art

This room proves that you don’t have to pick a “style.” Traditional, laid-back furnishings pair perfectly with modern art and a rustic fireplace.

living room oasis

And, of course, accessories always put something great over the top!

bedroom oasis

It’s amazing how simple architectural details can add so much charm.

outdoor oasis

The outdoor living spaces perfectly mirror the interior of this fabulous home.

outdoor

In the outdoors, as with interiors, it’s all about the little things! The details make this space so chic.

pinterest oasis

Just, wow. This is a photo made for Pinterest! And wonderful conversation with someone you love.

oasis

Lush and well planned yet totally unfussy, this is the kind of landscape architecture dreams are made of! Do you see those tiny stone steps into the water? Swooning! The dog looks almost as if he was planted there to perfect the scene!

garden oasis

Thanks so much to all of you for making Design Chic a part of your day. We love it when you stop by!

House Tour: Transformed Tudor in Tuxedo Park

Millner-Busch, Hart tudor home

Good morning, chic friends! I leaving Atlanta today heading to beautiful Charleston for The Secret to Southern Charm signings… but I have had the most amazing time in Atlanta!

Millner-Busch, Hart tudor home

No matter where your heart lies, this fabulous home from Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles won’t disappoint!

 tudor home entrance

Traditional elements with the right mix of modern…

 tudor home living room

Hints of glamour in all the right places…

 tudor home living room

And architectural details that accentuate at every turn…

 tudor home living room

This beautiful space is just the right kind of chic.

Tudor home kitchen

Steel doors and windows always make a stunning statement. And we just adore toning down a more formal room with a natural fiber rug.

Tudor home dining room

Upholstered dining chairs feel so cozy and welcoming. They’re a family-friendly touch in a formal dining room.

Tudor home family room

The right shade of paint makes a paneled library still feel traditional but also freshened and bright.

Tudor home kitchen

A beautiful banquette is one of our favorite parts of a breakfast room — and such a good use of space!

Tudor home kitchen

Whimsical elements tie this space together perfectly.

Tudor home bedroom

A canopy bed creates instant impact. A settee on the end of a bed is comfy but can look stuffy. This casual alternative is the ideal touch.

Tudor home bedroom

We love a chaise, but it’s not always the right look. This chair and ottoman give the style — and the comfort — in a way that’s right for the space.

Tudor home bathroom

And, of course, every gorgeous home needs an amazing soaking tub. We think this one looks heavenly!

Thank you so much for visiting with us today. We always love getting to see you!
