Things We Love: The Beauty of a Basket

Shelley Johnstone

If there’s one thing we can’t get enough of, it’s stylish storage space. From stashing papers to stowing dirty laundry to concealing toys,  baskets are double-duty players when it comes to hiding your junk and displaying your good taste. They’re easy on the earth, easy on your wallet and go with every decor in any room. From the bathroom to the kitchen, there’s a place for natural fiber baskets in every space. Check out these beautiful ways to incorporate baskets into your design.

House Tour: Carolina Cottage

Janie Molster Designs

Good morning, chic readers! We don’t know how the weather is where you are, but the past couple days here have been warm, sunny and absolutely gorgeous! We are having major Spring fever, savoring every second outside–and hoping that that groundhog was wrong and this warm weather is here to stay.

Whether you’re really having summer weather or just dreaming about us, take a little mini-vacation with us today to this beyond fabulous Carolina cottage designed by Janie Molster.

There is nothing like beach cottage, with all those historic touches, to take us back to beach trips of our childhoods.

The thing we love most about this home is how Molster mixes those sweet, nostalgic touches–like wood paneling–with bright updated style.

This island is the perfect spot for sandy feet and pimento cheese sandwiches!

Fresh watermelon and strawberries from a roadside stand become accessories in this kitchen.

Exposed beams and painted floors lend a classic look,

While bright linens lend fun, fresh vacation-worthy appeal.

All I can say is that I wish I had seen this earlier… We had so many pairs of red Keds! What a fun way to incorporate them into the style.

Bold red and pretty marble update this bath, while hexagonal tile remains a throwback to a simpler time that’s still completely on trend.

Nothing says “beach retreat” like a fabulous kids’ room!

Beach towel goals!! We can’t decide which is cuter, the towels or the basket!

At the beach, driftwood really is the best accessory!

This utterly charming, classic exterior ties it all together–and, y’all, that view. This looks like the kind of place that has made a thousand memories and will make a thousand more. Thanks for touring with us today! We hope you love this Carolina cottage as much as we do!

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day!

Things We Love: Luxe Laundry Rooms

Good morning, chic readers! We hope you had a terrific 4th of July holiday and found a little time for resting and playing!

laundry room with brass pendants and hardware

Holiday weekends are always so fun. What’s less fun is catching up on all the things we put off doing during them… like laundry.

Of course, the laundry doesn’t have to feel like such a chore, not when the laundry room can easily become one of the most stunning rooms in the house!

laundry room with black and white tile
Studio McGee| Lucy Call Photography

A few simple design elements like fabulous tile and paint can transform a laundry room into a fun and whimsical space that makes doing the laundry just a little more fun.

A punch of color adds lots of life to this laundry area. And black and white tile are a forever favorite.

Whether you have lots of space or just a little, a few simple touches can help transform the laundry room from a bleak, dull space to somewhere that makes laundry time just a little more fun! Thanks so much for stopping by Design Chic today. We hope you have a great one!

What design bloggers are saying about Slightly South of Simple

“Kristy captures the voices of a mother and 3 grown daughters in an authentic way. I would describe Slightly South of Simple as a sunny day at the beach, with a few menacing, cloudy twists.  I’m glad to hear this magnetic read is the first of a series on this family of strong, independent women, landing again in Peach Tree Bluff. I loved it!” —Heather, Style Mind Chic

Things We Love: Blonde Wood in Every Room

white kitchen from Collins Interiors
Collins Interiors

We don’t know if it’s true that blondes have more fun. (Although, as a lifelong blonde, I could made a strong case for it!) But we’re pretty sure, if these gorgeous homes are any indication, that blonde wood make a house more fun. We’ve never seen anything quite like these blonde wood pendants! They are incredible and blend so well with the bar stools. Can we talk about these vases too? All we know is that we want them!

Hardwoods are obviously a perfect choice for kitchen style. We love them in a variety of shades, but we think a lighter flooring choice feels casual and fun. What do you think?

From bright bold, shades….

To more subdued tones or neutrals, every color pairs well with blonde wood!

Shiny and fresh or raw and rustic, we love blonde wood any old way! Are you a fan?

Marvelous Mudrooms!

brass
Alyssa Rosenheck Photography

Mudrooms are one of our absolute favorite parts of a home. We love the idea of having a place that we can drop all of our things and keep the house looking neat and tidy.  So much so that we are going to add one to the beach house. We have a big space right by the back door, perfect for creating the ultimate storage area. So we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what exactly we want to achieve out of this space. The absolute non-negotiable is big, deep drawers for dropping beach bags, purses and all sorts of various and sundry things that tend to collect by the back door.

paint
Traci Zeller Design

And, because there is so much vertical space, we definitely plan on taking advantage with little cubbies up top for baskets. You can never have enough baskets!

the-beach
Andrew Howard Interior Design

We love pretty doors but are afraid that putting too many of them in the area will make it feel closed–it’s kind of narrow. So we’ll probably just include one to hide the electrical panel and store brooms, mops, etc.

And, of course, a bench is a great part of a mudroom area. It’s perfect for slipping on shoes–and, with the right cushion, adds tons of charm!

Hooks, of course, are mandatory for a fabulous mudroom. They are perfect for storing hats or hanging bags.We love the way that a mudroom instantly makes everything look so much more organized. We’re so excited!

If you’re looking for that perfect summer beach read for your vacation, don’t for get to pick up a copy of Lies and Other Acts of Love!
