Add a Coastal Touch with Serena & Lily

coastal design with Serena & Lily

Good morning, chic readers! If you’ve been following along, you might know that I have been on book tour for my new novel, The Southern Side of Paradise, for the past three and a half weeks. I have had an absolute blast, but am so excited to get a couple day break to go home for Memorial Day weekend! It’s officially beach season, and I live at the beach, so the timing couldn’t be better!

Our Hurricane Florence renovations have been going on for the past nine months or so, and we are seeing a light at the tunnel and are so looking forward to moving back in soon. Going home has us dreaming of replacing what we lost and getting ready for what is, in our opinion, the most fun season! A great start? This gorgeous foyer table. Classically chic with a touch of coastal, it doesn’t get better!

Serena & lily - blue and white- coastal living room

To us, there’s no more important room than the living room. From family TV nights to cocktail parties, we use ours every day. Have a versatile, durable, and, of course, chic coffee table at the center of it all is a vital part of this all-important space.

coastal breakfast room from Serena & Lily with wicker chairs and a round dining table

We love a gorgeous breakfast room, and this one practically shouts, “Good morning!” With the sun beaming through the windows, this is the perfect place to gather around the dining table to greet the day–and the chairs are the perfect touch of coastal chic.

coastal dining room from Serena & lily with Riviera chairs

Of course, whether to eat in the breakfast room or this gorgeous dining room would be a touch choice. The fabulous chandelier, stunning but streamlined, ties the room together.

coastal bedroom with Serena & Lily

To us, coastal style in the bedroom requires nothing more than crisp, clean, white bedding. This is too pretty for words–and the touch of sea blue ties the look together.

bathroom with coconut shell chandelier and wicker stool from Serena & Lily

Nothing punctuates a bathroom quite like Serena & Lily towels. And this tiny table? Perfection! Have we mentioned that we are swooning over this coconut shell chandelier? Take it from us, it’s even more gorgeous in real life!

bedroom and wicker bench with Serena & lily with gallery wall

We had the best time on this “before & after” Serena & Lily collaboration at our house. Unfortunately, this room is gutted… But we’re hoping to be “after” ready again soon!

bathroom with Serena & lily stool

This laundry basket and stool were two of our favorite parts of last year’s Serena & Lily Collaboration. Fortunately, we were able to salvage both of them!

porch sitting with Serena & lily wicker furniture and chandeliers

If coastal style is welcome indoors, it’s almost mandatory outdoors. We love everything about this beautiful porch!

Dining alfresco with Serena & Lily with slipcovered chairs

Dining al fresco has never looked so good!

poolside with Serena & lily - pool umbrella and wicker chaise lounge

Just one more day until we’re relaxing poolside… and we’re only days away from Serena & Lily’s Memorial Day Sale too! For all you style needs–especially your coastal ones–no one does it better. (And, we don’t know about you, but we can’t resist a sale!) The Memorial Day Sale will be open to the public 5/22-5/28. Everything will be on sale with code SUMMERPREP, excluding final sale, gift certificates, art, and the limited-edition PUBLIC® C7 Bike. Don’t miss it!

At Serena & Lily, living well (and summer!) begins at home!

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day. We always love it when you stop by! Happy Memorial Day Weekend, friends!

House Tour: Alys Beach Retreat

Home of Interior Philosophy Co-Owner

Even though it may not officially be fall yet, Labor Day always feels like the end of summer–to us, anyway.

We are always sad for the end of summer, with its carefree beach days and long, lazy boat hours. Of course, fall has plenty of its own charms–football season, boots, pumpkin spice lattes… (In case you haven’t heard, they’re back!!)

Even still, we’re already dreaming of Spring Break!

For this year’s late April Spring Break, we think the weather–and the beauty–of Alys Beach will do quite nicely.

To facilitate our Spring Break dreaming we wanted to take a look around this fabulous Alys Beach home.

The think we love most about this 30A enclave–besides its pristine white sand beaches and clear blue water, of course–is its soothing, uniform palette.

This beautiful home builds on the exquisite creams and browns and neutrals of the chic beach town’s exterior, making the entire thing feel cohesive.

Unexpected accessories lend a touch of the exotic and a bit of the British Colonial to the home’s overall feel.

Every room–even the bathroom–is set up to take advantage of the breathtaking view that lies beyond.

And despite this home’s upscale elegance, nothing feels too precious.

It’s the kind of place where sandy feet can tread and memories can grow.

It will still be weeks before we pack up our bathing suits for the winter and pull out the boots, months before the winter doldrums have time to cast their shadow and sink in.

All the while, we’ll feel happy and light knowing that another April, another Spring Break, and the promise of the sunny skies and stunning landscape of Alys Beach are just around the corner!

Thanks so much for stopping by today, friends! We always love it when you do!

Tips for Creating a Spa-Like Bathroom Retreat

Amber Interiors| Tessa Neustadt Photography

Good morning, chic readers! As the world spins faster and we get busier, it becomes increasingly important for our homes to be the soothing retreats we need to unwind. There’s no place where that is more important than in the first place you see in the morning and the last place you visit at night: the master bathroom. Take a peek at some of our favorite tips for creating a spa-like master bathroom retreat.

  1. Maximize Light. If you have the luxury of a bathroom free from neighbors, natural light is one of the fastest ways to make a bathroom feel open, airy and spa-like.

    2. Invest in Quality. There are some rooms in the home where you can get by with scrimping, but, in the bathroom, where everything from floors to faucets to drains get a ton of use, it makes sense to invest in the best quality you can afford. (Even still, you never know when a problem like a blocked drain can arise, so it’s a good idea to have your favorite plumber’s number on hand!)

3. Glam it Up. From beautiful brass or stainless accents to pretty light fixtures, a little glamour can go a long way!

4. Don’t Forget Storage. There’s nothing worse than creating a stunning bathroom only to have it filled with clutter. Plenty of storage ensures that hair irons and toiletries stay out of sight but readily available.

5. Make it Feel Like Home. Depending on what kind of feel you want your bathroom retreat to have, incorporating vanities that feel like furniture and comfort items like chairs from other rooms can really make your bathroom comfortable and in keeping with the tone of the rest of your home.

6. Make a List of Must-Haves. In any room, it’s important to focus on your priorities. For us, it’s always the bathtub and the light fixtures, but whatever your priorities are, make sure to put them in the budget first so you know where to splurge and where to save.

7. Don’t Forget the Architectural Details. As with any room, it’s the details that really make a room memorable. In a spot with so much moisture, art can be tricky, so focusing on fabulous molding and woodworking details adds interest.

8. Make it Comfortable. Maybe it sounds obvious, but any room that you want to feel like a sanctuary should be comfortable! We love this sweet and cozy vanity stool!

9. Play it up with Pattern. Let’s face it. Bathrooms can be boring. In a room where you want to stick with a simple palette, a little bit of pattern can go a long way toward defining a space.

10. Keep Your Favorite Essentials on Hand. Our favorite tip is the simplest: Make sure keep your favorite spa-like essentials on hand. Pretty sponges, favorite bath salts and that shampoo that makes your hair feel like you’ve just had a keratin treatment are inexpensive luxuries that add so much to your bathroom without a bit of demo!

What are your favorite ways to make your bathroom feel like a retreat?

Creating a Dream Home–Down to the Last Detail

What do you think of when you hear the term “dream home?”

For us, so many different things come to mind.

We could dream of a tiny farm cottage with a picket fence and trailing ivy…

Or a sprawling country estate with horses and plenty of room for beautiful gardens

A quaint ski chalet…

Or a cedar shake New England home with plenty of room for visiting guests.

For us, a dream home could be anything, really, where we are surrounded by things we love–and people we love, of course.

No matter how you define “dream home,” we feel pretty sure that this qualifies as one.

The Fox Group.  has created an enviable space with so many stunning details it would be impossible to pick a favorite–

And we would could look at these photos a thousand times and still find something new to delight and inspire.

From open shelving on a very luxe level,

To extraordinary hardware,

Marble as far as the eye can see,

To a workspace for everyone in the family,

Each perfectly orchestrated area of this family house makes it feel like home.

We think it would be nearly impossible to pick a favorite room, a favorite detail. But if we had to, we think the bathroom in this dream home might take the cake!

What is your idea of a dream home? Is is luxurious, modern and spacious like this or something a little simpler? We’d love to know!

We hope you had an amazing weekend and are so grateful that you stopped by Design Chic to spend a bit of your Monday with us. We always love it when you do!

Creating a Spa Like Master Bath

Alyssa Rosenheck Photography

As the world spins faster and we get busier and busier in our lives, it is increasingly more important for our homes to become the soothing retreats  we need to unwind. There’s no place where that is more important than in the first place you see in the morning and the last place you visit at night: the master bathroom. Whether it’s adding beautiful vanities that look as much like stunning furniture as sinks, or making sure the lighting is just right, the little things can help ensure that this all-important room feels like an oasis. While we can’t create a view, we can make the most of it in our bathrooms, focusing on maximizing light through the windows and situating our baths on the most private ends of our homes.

Jenkins Interiors bathroom with herringbone tile floors

There is nothing quite as relaxing as a steam shower in the privacy of your own master bathroom. This luxury is getting easier and easier to install. Soaking tubs are another easy bathroom staple that can truly make you feel like you’ve had a relaxing spa day in the comfort of your own home. Simple elements from the outdoors can make your bath feel soothing and calmer. Just a few fresh flowers or a simple plant are the perfect addition. What are your favorite elements of a spa-like bathroom?

Summer Showers and Beautiful Baths!

shower in the bathroom with teak bench
A;yssa Rosenheck Photography

Good morning, chic readers! We hope you are having a great day. Today is officially the last day of school–the last day of preschool, even–which is incredibly hard to believe. I feel like I should be upset and contemplative over the fact that preschool is over and next year is Kindergarten, but I am so excited for summer I can’t muster much sadness!  With almost three months of sandy feel, pool time and plenty of guests ahead of us, all we know is that our bathrooms are getting ready to work over time!  We know so many people that are making the most of their space by ditching their bathtubs all together in favor of generously sized showers. While we love a gorgeous shower as much as the next person, we can’t even imagine not having a bathtub! It’s the perfect relaxing end to a day–especially when it looks like this! What about you? Could you ditch your bathtub for good?

A gorgeous vanity is the perfect finishing touch in a well-appointed bathroom. We love the drawers for keeping everything neat and organized.

bathroom with steel frame
Alyssa Rosenheck Photography

While we love frameless, elegant shower doors that seem to disappear, there’s no arguing that these steel doors make such a chic statement with a hint of industrial thrown in! If we’re going to spend the next three months soaking sandy bathing suits and rinsing chlorine-laden hair, why not have the most beautiful possible spot to do so? We don’t know about you, but we’re so looking forward to summer, gritty floors and all!

What design bloggers are saying about Slightly South of Simple:

“If you want a wonderful book to read now or on Spring break or summer vacation order this book out in April. I feel very lucky to have received an advance copy and I was hooked 4 pages into reading it. That never happens to me unless it is a decorating book, trust me this book is wonderful. I can totally visualize everything she describes in writing. I am a visual gal so this is fun for me. This needs to be made into a movie. It looks like my beautiful Southern friend Kristy Woodson Harvey has done it again with… Slightly South of Simple.” Kathysue Perdue, Good Life of Design

Upcoming on the Slightly South of Simple Tour:

Monday, June 12: Sapphire Valley Country Club, Cashiers, NC, 4-6pm, drop-in reception. Tickets are $25 and include light hors d’oeuvres and a copy of Slightly South of Simple. Open to the public. Contact Sidney Truesdale for more information 828-743-2462.
