It probably won’t surprise anyone to know that I am a big fan of words. So, when it comes to setting goals, resolutions and intentions for a new year (which I love, by the way), my favorite part is choosing my “word” for the year.
It’s always tricky to encapsulate the entirety of 365 days into one little word, one or two or three syllables. This year, it came pretty easily for me, though.
For 2020, my word of the year is stillness. After being out of our house for the entirety of 2019 after Hurricane Florence damage, and in the midst of long book tours, family travel, out of town events and the general busyness of life, stillness of body can be a little hard to come by. But stillness of mind, that cultivated gift that you can take anywhere, is what I’m after this year.
If you’ve followed Design Chic for a long time, you know that Mom and I believe that most of life’s best things begin at home, that home is the foundation for everything else we do, that home is what we carry out with us into the world.
And so, in that way, so much of my 2020 stillness begins at home, with getting it back in order, with making it feel like it once did–maybe even better–and creating that calm space that is a launch pad for calm and quiet no matter where we go.
Herlong Architects, as you can see, are masterful at creating calming, beautifully cultivated homes.
These are homes that promote and create a sense of stillness.
Calm soothing color palettes,
Organic, natural elements,
And a sense of balance in every space,
Create the kind of homes that are a true sanctuary, an antidote to the hectic pace of a world that can sometimes seem to spin too quickly.
And they, of course, incorporate spaces to revel in the ultimate creator of stillness: Mother Nature. Whatever your word is this year, we hope that your home helps you cultivate it!
My next novel, FEELS LIKE FALLING, releases April 28, 2020! I can’t wait to share this tale of Gray and Diana, their unlikely friendship, their summer loves and their chance at happily ever after, the sequel, with all of you. It’s never too early to preorder from your favorite local bookstore or online retailer!
More About Feels Like Falling…
From “the next major voice in Southern fiction” (Elin Hilderbrand) and the bestselling author of the Peachtree Bluff series comes an odd couple tale of friendship that asks just how much our past choices define our happiness.
In her warmest, wittiest, and wisest novel yet, Kristy Woodson Harvey delivers a discerning portrait of modern womanhood through two vastly different lenses. Feels Like Falling is a beach bag essential for Harvey fans—and for a new generation of readers.
