MORE ABOUT FEELS LIKE FALLING:

It’s summertime on the North Carolina coast and the livin’ is easy.

Unless, that is, you’ve just lost your mother to cancer, your sister to her extremist husband, and your husband to his executive assistant. Meet Gray Howard. Right when Gray could use a serious infusion of good karma in her life, she inadvertently gets a stranger, Diana Harrington, fired from her job at the local pharmacy.

Diana Harrington’s summer isn’t off to the greatest start either: Hours before losing her job, she broke up with her boyfriend and moved out of their shared house with only a worn-out Impala for a bed. Lucky for her, Gray has an empty guest house and a very guilty conscience.

With Gray’s kindness, Diana’s tide begins to turn. But when her first love returns, every secret from her past seems to resurface all at once. And, as Gray begins to blaze a new trail, she discovers, with Diana’s help, that what she envisioned as her perfect life may not be what she wants at all.

In her warmest, wisest novel yet, Kristy Woodson Harvey delivers a discerning portrait of modern womanhood through two vastly different lenses. Feels Like Falling is a beach bag essential for Harvey fans—and for a new generation of readers.

Things We Love: Meaningful Collections

collections of china

When you live on the coast, you have a lot of time to think about which things in your home are most important to you. At least once a year there is some sort of hurricane or major storm and, not wanting to be stuck on an island indefinitely, we evacuate. (It was the deal I made with my husband when we moved! I’m pretty sure he would never leave…) Generally, we don’t give it much thought.

Board up, pack a bag, hope for the best, come home and assess.  But everyone has those things that are most important to them, those special, sentimental pieces that represent family or trips or happy times, the non-negotiables that they pack up and take when a disaster seems imminent because they would be heartbroken if they lost them.

It could be signed books, family silver, favorite, irreplaceable photos taken during a time when clouds lived in the sky, not on our cell phones and laptops. Collections, if you will, that don’t fall into the “it’s just stuff” category.

Or maybe even family china or linens, repurposed and much loved. For me, for years, it was nothing. But, when Hurricane Florence came, and maybe now, ever after, I took two treasures: an antique lapdesk and an early 1800s mother-of-pearl and sterling dessert set that belonged to my husband’s grandmother and was one of my favorite wedding gifts. It was far too beautiful for floodwaters.

Are you a collector–or a wannabe collector? What would you collect if you were going to start?

More About Feels Like Falling…

From “the next major voice in Southern fiction” (Elin Hilderbrand) and the bestselling author of the Peachtree Bluff series comes an odd couple tale of friendship that asks just how much our past choices define our happiness.

It’s summertime on the North Carolina coast and the livin’ is easy.

Unless, that is, you’ve just lost your mother to cancer, your sister to her evangelical husband, and your husband to his executive assistant. Meet Gray Howard. Right when Gray could use a serious infusion of good karma in her life, she inadvertently gets a stranger fired from her job at the local pharmacy.

With Gray’s kindness, Diana’s tide begins to turn, but when the one that got away comes back, every secret from her past seems to resurface all at once. And, as Gray begins to blaze a new trail, she discovers, with Diana’s help, that what she envisioned as her perfect life may not be what she wants at all.

In her warmest, wittiest, and wisest novel yet, Kristy Woodson Harvey delivers a discerning portrait of modern womanhood through two vastly different lenses. Feels Like Falling is a beach bag essential for Harvey fans—and for a new generation of readers.

The Nature of Home: Creating Timeless Houses

Jeffrey Duncan Architect entrance

William Abranowicz Photography

My 92-year-old grandmother started aerobics yesterday. Yes. Started. In the thirty-three years I’ve known her, she hasn’t been much for exercise, but September is a really good time to start something new if you’re going to. And there’s no time like the present.

Jeffrey Duncan Architect entrance

One of our Design Chic favorites, architect Jeffrey Dungan, decided to start something new too–and we couldn’t be more excited!

Jeffrey Duncan Architect kitchen

His new book, The Nature of Home: Creating Timeless Houses, released on September 4, and, in our opinion, it’s one of the best of the year so far!

Jeffrey Duncan Architect bedroom

A little more about the book: Architect Jeffrey Dungan is recognized for his clean and modern approach to traditional homes. His fresh take on architecture is rooted in the beauty of materials rendered in their natural state. Dungan’s projects poetically embrace clean lines and natural elements, to reveal a timeless home that can be enjoyed by future generations to come. Layered in between are thematic essays and more than 240 images that showcase Dungan’s approach to architecture and the importance of elements and materials that honors THE NATURE OF HOME.

Jeffrey Duncan Architect home

When it comes to home, this timeless approach couldn’t be more important. Because while, sure, home is a canvas that is always evolving, it’s the basis of it, the roots, the things that stay the same in the meantime that create those true and lasting memories, that feeling when you pull in the driveway, when you walk in the front door

Jeffrey Duncan Architect home

No one does home quite as well as Jeffrey Dungan

The Nature of Home, in 240 captivating photos, and a series of fascinating, well written essays, proves that once and for all!

Make sure to pick up your copy of The Nature of Home from your local bookstore, Amazon or wherever books are sold!

Organizing the Kitchen for Entertaining

kitchen organizing

Studio Dearborn

Good morning, friends! Did you have a good weekend? What were you up to? We hope, whatever it was, it was fun! The Beaufort house is going to see lots of action this week with two parties and overnight guests, so we’ve been working on getting everything neat and organized, which is trickier during the summer when we’re actually home more!

kitchen organizing

The kitchen is always the toughest place to keep neat and organized, for us anyway. (I am counting down the days until construction begins on our addition which will include a new mudroom/storage area! Yay!) In the meantime, we’re trying to make some small changes that will have a big impact.

kitchen organizing

This paper towel holder, for one, is so fabulous! Such a great idea. We don’t like having them on the counter, and they can’t go under the cabinets because we have lights. Keeping them under the sink is okay, but it would be even better to have them right on hand like these!

kitchen organizing

We love all kinds of cabinet styles. This wire is wonderful!

kitchen organizing

We love a pretty fruit bowl on the counter. Besides being beautiful, we think it helps us eat more fruit throughout the day–and saves room in the fridge.

kitchen organizing

A gorgeous blue backsplash is one that shouldn’t be covered up. No need for accessories here.

kitchen organizing

Fresh flowers on the counter feel like a reward.

kitchen organizing

When everything is neat and clean, the flowers are the perfect finishing touch.

kitchen organizing

Feet of fresh, white marble are the ultimate reward for keeping a clean and neat kitchen–

kitchen organizing

you get to enjoy your beautiful countertops.

kitchen organizing

Having spices right at hand is crucial for cooking. A simple drawer insert makes it so you can see them all at the same time. Ours are alphabetized in the cabinet, which isn’t quite as convenient but still neat.

kitchen organizing

We’re all about an accessory, but in the kitchen, we tend to think, the simpler, the better. This coral bowl adds a burst of color. The watermelon is a good–and delicious–summer touch as well.

kitchen organizing

This sleek, thin fridge and freezer feel incredibly chic and organized.

kitchen organizing

Huge drawers are our favorite, favorite part of a kitchen organization plan. They are perfect for pots and pans.

kitchen organizing

The only thing better than organized cutlery is organized cutlery that’s bright and fun! These ooze summer!

kitchen organizing

This is genius! We can’t stand having iPads and phones and computers cluttering the countertops. This charging station gets rid of all the mess and stores it away beautifully.

kitchen organizing

These mixer shelves are some of our favorite parts of the kitchen–although a beautiful stand mixer is one of the few accessories we don’t mind having on the counter.

If you could add an organizational element to your kitchen, what would you choose? Have a great day!
