Unity in Design and In Our Lives

With a new year beginning and Martin Luther King Day only a day past, this is an absolutely perfect time to celebrate unity with some of our favorite bloggers, our By Invitation Only group.

During a time where it seems like there are so many things dividing us, every now and then it’s nice to focus on what unites us, on what common beliefs we hold and on what makes us the same as the people that, sometimes, we may not understand.

Unity–and a unified look–can be just as important in our homes as it is in our lives.

This stunning home by a favorite designer, James Michael Howard, is a perfect example of unity in design.

It is the kind of home that flows effortlessly from one space to the next,

That has a common theme that makes each room feel cohesive and relates it to the one before.

In our homes and in our lives unity can’t help but breed tranquility,

A sense of peace and a break from the chaos and confusion.

Just like we need good friends and family to share our lives with,

It is wonderful to have a place to come home to at the end of a long day that feels not only only exactly how we want it to, but also like a retreat from the rest of the world.

Moments of dark and still,

And bits of whimsy in unexpected places,

Light, airy, vaulted ceilings

Plenty of light,

And a cohesive color palette create a sense of unity in this stunning home.

We can’t think of a more beautiful way to create a sense of unity within yourself that you can’t help but carry out into the world.

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day. We always love it when you stop by!

Setting the Table for Our Dream Dinner Party

Good morning, chic readers! We are so, so excited that Christmastime is almost here!

We are counting down the minutes until all the family is together again and we are sitting around the dinner table talking, laughing and, of course, eating the yummy meals that we only get once a year.

In the meantime, we are joining forces with the other By Invitation Only girls to chat about our dream dinner party!

It would of course start with the perfect table setting. Fine china. Starched linens. Sterling silver

And champagne. Always, always champagne. There is absolutely another more festive or more celebratory than a few bubbles sparkling in a glass!

But one of the parts of a dream dinner party is making sure that everyone has his or her favorites. So we would certainly make sure to accommodate everyone’s unique tastes.

We like food. We honestly do. But if we’re dreaming here, desserts would really be enough. Small confections that melt in your mouth and chocolate. All the chocolate.

To go with the sweets and champagne? Salted Caramel White Russians!

And white hot chocolate in festive mugs with cinnamon sticks.

As for decorations, no fancy flowers will be necessary. We’d rather have a gingerbread house any day of the week!

In fact, anything kid-friendly would do.

Because we should all get to be kids again at the holidays.

As for our dream guests. Well, we would invite YOU! We can’t think of anything better than sitting around a gorgeous table sipping hot chocolate with our fabulous, amazing readers who make every day feel like a special occasion.

Then we could all pop party crackers together, hug goodbye and promise to do it again next year. Because the best parties are traditions, ones that we can look forward to year after year. And dream about long after they are over…

books

Last week we had the pleasure of spending a fun-filled long weekend in the place that we think gets as close to Christmas magic as you can without going to the North Pole: NYC! I had the most amazing  day of meetings with the team at Gallery Books (Simon & Schuster),  about all that is THE SECRET TO SOUTHERN CHARM, the sequel to SLIGHTLY SOUTH OF SIMPLE and the second book in Peachtree Bluff series–and filmed fun videos that I can’t wait to share with you! To celebrate the upcoming launch (April 3, 2018!) and get you in the holiday spirit, we’re giving away a $100 Amazon gift card for your holiday essentials. Enter below!

The Power of Connections

Lilly Bunn

‘Tis the season, readers. For trees and presents

Friends and fellowship,

Meg Braff Designs

And gathering around a home cooked meal.

Thanksgiving dining
Rose and Ivy

Because these next few weeks are about celebrating, about savoring, about remembering. But, most importantly of all, they’re about connecting.

Marie Flanigan

In the rush of the decorating and the shopping, the parties and the egg nog, the kids’ programs and present wrapping, there are moments, many of them, in fact, that are tailor made for connecting, for remembering who and what is most important in our lives.

Whether it’s taking the time to reconnect with a friend you haven’t seen in far too long in the corner of a crowded party over the fa-la-las blaring through the speakers,

Or staying up far too late whispering with that relative that you haven’t seen since last ChristmasFighting over who gets to sit at the best seat, the one beside Grandmother and, even better, her stories of holidays past,

Or deciding to forgo gifts this year in favor of good, true, quality time together, we hope that this season can be filled, for each of you, with what we all need perhaps most of all: love, relationships and a reminder of where we come from and where we want to go. Because, amid the bells and tinsels, the festivities and the merriment, there is always time for remembering what is most important.

Speaking of connections, we are so grateful for our By Invitation Only group this holiday season–and the friendship of these remarkable women. To see each of their takes on connections this season, visit Daily Plate of Crazy, where we’ll all be linking up!

Thank you so much for stopping by and for making Design Chic a part of your day!

If you’re in the Triangle, NC area, I would love to see you this Thursday night, November 16 at Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill, NC at 7 pm. I’ll be there signing Slightly South of Simple, sipping champagne and talking books with my friends and fellow Tall Poppy writers Katie Rose Guest Pryal and Susan Bishop Crispell. Come join us!

Fall, Fashion and that One Special Thing!

1

It’s the time again! This month, for our wonderful By Invitation Only group, the fabulous Marsha from Splenderosa came up with some wonderful questions about fall, fashion and the things we can’t live without! Take a peek below… And let us know what your answers would be!

What is your“take everywhere:”

Lanvin tote. It’s neutral, durable and has some sort of coating on it that doesn’t destroy it when juice spills in my bag… Yeah. That happens a lot.

By Invitation Only!

Good morning, everyone! Actually, good warm morning. Good I-didn’t-have-to-wear-my-parka-today morning! We are so excited because this is our first ever post for By Invitation Only Group, organized by the ultimate hostess: Marsha from Splenderosa. We’re talking about Flower Power today, which we think is so tremendously fun. (And, since Marsha’s hand is in it, glamorously fun as well!)

Azalea Floral-Lace Dress

Dresses are our go-to for Spring. We live at the beach in the summers, which means lots of fun cocktails and band parties. Which means lots of fun dresses! From casual (think: Lululemon.) to super dressy, we spend the Spring and Summer months in dresses. We are dying over this dress. Salivating. I need this dress. I try to stay away from white since you can’t wear it to weddings, but I am sure there will be the perfect event! Of course, in my mind, I look like the model in it… But that’s another story.

Paneled Floral-Lace and Mesh Dress

We don’t actually think of ourselves as liking flowers in fashion. In our homes, why yes, yes, yes! But the trend is growing on us in a big way. Who wouldn’t love this frock? So chic, but a little more covered.
