Things We Love: Simple Greens

If one of your New Year’s Resolutions was to get more greens in your life, look no further.

Oh. Wait. No, no, no, not those greens. (Although, we drink Amazing Grass Kids Chocolate Superfood and it is as amazing as its title suggests. Yeah, we could try the adult kind, but you know it won’t be as good…)

Anyway, there is nothing quite as wonderful as having fresh things in your home: flowers, cake, greenery, fudge, air.

But if you’re like us and lacking in the green thumb department, there is nothing we love quite as much as few fresh leaves.

They’re super chic, on trend, live a long, long time, and lend any space that decidedly India Hicks vibe. We don’t know about you, but that’s a vibe we want.

Speaking of, Mom has a big birthday coming up next year. Don’t ask which one. A lady never tells.

And we rented one of India Hicks’ fab houses in Eleuthera for her birthday trip. Don’t tell her. It’s a surprise! Just kidding… She does read her own blog, so that would be hard to hide. We’ll share pics!

There are sure to be plenty of palm leaves like these. If there aren’t, we’ll cut some.

We know these are on trend, but really anything works.

Cut a few favorites from your own yard and you’ll be well on your way to getting more greens—no spinach required!

The Pros and Cons of a Marble Kitchen

Every time we post our kitchen on Design Chic, we get flooded with emails asking the same question: How has your white marble worn? It’s a good question because, if you know anything about marble, you know it gets it’s share of flak in the wear-and-tear department.

When we got it, we knew the risks.

We’d heard the horror stories. Etching, staining, imperfections left and right.

Even still, we wanted white marble. We just did. Maybe it wasn’t particularly kid friendly and maybe it wasn’t as hardy as some stones.

But it achieved the look we wanted. It was the countertop we had been dreaming of since we walked into that kitchen, which, at the time, was dark, musty and had chipped laminate countertops and 1950s appliances.

We decided after much research to go with honed marble, instead of polished. We had polished marble at home and I was always having it polished and perfected.

After six years of wear and tear, our honed white marble is perhaps even more beautiful than the day it came into our home.

We had it sealed, which certainly helped, and, truth be told, there’s some etching and some scratching and if you look really closely, there’s a stain or two.

But, in some ways, that has made it even better, like it has remembered every sandy pimento cheese sandwich, every cocktail party, every family dinner, every glass of wine with a best friend. It’s growing older with grace, and we feel pretty certain that its dancing days are far from over.

Things We Love: Natural Stone in the Kitchen

natural stone in kitchen - marble
Anne Hepfer Design

There’s something so soothing about bringing bits of nature into our design schemes. From houseplants to fruits and veggies, minerals to natural stone, there are so many ways to incorporate all that Mother Nature has to offer into our homes.

Of all the places that natural surfaces can be incorporated in our homes, we think the kitchen might be our favorite.

But using stone in the kitchen isn’t all that cut and dry. Which surfaces are most durable? Which are best for cutting? What are the pros and cons of each?

So many factors and aspects go into choosing so many of the details of our homes. That’s we are so glad to have found  Use Natural Stone, a site that features guides and detailed descriptions of many natural surfaces and their best purposes.

We are especially fond of the fact sheets on the site that break down information about each of the popular stones. Sandstone, for example, is a material we love but didn’t know much about. And all the information was right there!

One of our favorite things about stone in the kitchen is that, no matter what you choose, if it’s natural, it’s going to look fabulous with pretty much any color scheme.

Can’t choose just one stone? No problem! This combination of soapstone and marble is not only aesthetically pleasing but also creates different surfaces for areas that get worked a little harder.

If you love the durability of granite but are tired of seeing the same old countertops, honed granite is a beautiful choice. It’s one of our current favorites, in fact!

Black granite is an easy way to create that enviable, classic black and white color palette. With a little bit of wood mixed in, it’s perfect!

Want a look that’s uniquely yours? We’ve never seen anything quite like this blue honed granite! No matter your style, there’s the right natural stone for any home. If you were remodeling your kitchen, which stone would you pick?
