House Tour: Alys Beach Retreat

Home of Interior Philosophy Co-Owner

Even though it may not officially be fall yet, Labor Day always feels like the end of summer–to us, anyway.

We are always sad for the end of summer, with its carefree beach days and long, lazy boat hours. Of course, fall has plenty of its own charms–football season, boots, pumpkin spice lattes… (In case you haven’t heard, they’re back!!)

Even still, we’re already dreaming of Spring Break!

For this year’s late April Spring Break, we think the weather–and the beauty–of Alys Beach will do quite nicely.

To facilitate our Spring Break dreaming we wanted to take a look around this fabulous Alys Beach home.

The think we love most about this 30A enclave–besides its pristine white sand beaches and clear blue water, of course–is its soothing, uniform palette.

This beautiful home builds on the exquisite creams and browns and neutrals of the chic beach town’s exterior, making the entire thing feel cohesive.

Unexpected accessories lend a touch of the exotic and a bit of the British Colonial to the home’s overall feel.

Every room–even the bathroom–is set up to take advantage of the breathtaking view that lies beyond.

And despite this home’s upscale elegance, nothing feels too precious.

It’s the kind of place where sandy feet can tread and memories can grow.

It will still be weeks before we pack up our bathing suits for the winter and pull out the boots, months before the winter doldrums have time to cast their shadow and sink in.

All the while, we’ll feel happy and light knowing that another April, another Spring Break, and the promise of the sunny skies and stunning landscape of Alys Beach are just around the corner!

Thanks so much for stopping by today, friends! We always love it when you do!

Summer Showers and Beautiful Baths!

shower in bathroom
NYC&G

Good morning, chic readers! We hope you are having a great day. Today is officially the last day of school–the last day of preschool, even–which is incredibly hard to believe. I feel like I should be upset and contemplative over the fact that preschool is over and next year is Kindergarten, but I am so excited for summer I can’t muster much sadness!

With almost three months of sandy feel, pool time and plenty of guests ahead of us, all we know is that our bathrooms are getting ready to work over time!

From replacing that chipped tile to finally getting that glass shower stall you’ve been dreaming of, there’s really no time like summer to get your bathrooms in great shape before the year ahead.

We know so many people that are making the most of their space by ditching their bathtubs all together in favor of generously sized showers.

While we love a gorgeous shower as much as the next person, we can’t even imagine not having a bathtub! It’s the perfect relaxing end to a day–especially when it looks like this!

What about you? Could you ditch your bathtub for good?

One of the things that we’re always working on, something that can seem a little insignificant but adds to the overall spa-like feel, is finding beautiful toiletries to go inside our showers. It’s so nice to see through those pretty glass doors to bottles that look pretty and streamlined.

A gorgeous vanity is the perfect finishing touch in a well-appointed bathroom. We love the drawers for keeping everything neat and organized.

We’re huge fans of light everywhere and anywhere. If you have the privacy, a window in the shower can be so pretty!

While we love frameless, elegant shower doors that seem to disappear, there’s no arguing that these steel doors make such a chic statement with a hint of industrial thrown in!

If we’re going to spend the next three months soaking sandy bathing suits and rinsing chlorine-laden hair, why not have the most beautiful possible spot to do so? We don’t know about you, but we’re so looking forward to summer, gritty floors and all!

What design bloggers are saying about Slightly South of Simple:

“If you want a wonderful book to read now or on Spring break or summer vacation order this book out in April. I feel very lucky to have received an advance copy and I was hooked 4 pages into reading it. That never happens to me unless it is a decorating book, trust me this book is wonderful. I can totally visualize everything she describes in writing. I am a visual gal so this is fun for me. This needs to be made into a movie. It looks like my beautiful Southern friend Kristy Woodson Harvey has done it again with… Slightly South of Simple.” Kathysue Perdue, Good Life of Design

Upcoming on the Slightly South of Simple Tour:

Monday, June 12: Sapphire Valley Country Club, Cashiers, NC, 4-6pm, drop-in reception. Tickets are $25 and include light hors d’oeuvres and a copy of Slightly South of Simple. Open to the public. Contact Sidney Truesdale for more information 828-743-2462.

Outdoor Kitchens Perfect for Summer Entertaining!

Brown Jordan Outdoor kitchens

With Memorial Day behind us and months of summer unfolding sweetly and unhurriedly ahead of us, we thing it’s official: Porch sitting season is here!

Brown Jordan Outdoor kitchens

We don’t know about you, but one of our favorite things about summer is spending time outdoors with friends, grilling out and sipping cocktails, taking a dip in the pool or lounging with a great book. The kids running barefoot, catching lightning bugs, the cicadas chirping rhythmically in time to the evening breeze… We can’t think of anything better!

Brown Jordan Outdoor kitchens

One of our favorite, favorite ways to make the most of all the goodness summer has to offer is with outdoor entertaining.

Brown Jordan Outdoor kitchens

Gorgeous outdoor furniture, vibrant indoor outdoor fabrics… Little touches can turn a regular outdoor space into an experience, a porch into a living room, an extension of the indoor decor.

Brown Jordan Outdoor kitchens

Beyond a simple sitting area, we are loving that outdoor kitchens are making such a huge splash right now! What could be better than having all of the essentials you need for outdoor cooking and entertaining right at your fingertips all year round?

Brown Jordan Outdoor kitchens

This summer, we think it’s time to go way beyond the barbecue. From cabinetry to countertops, there are so many ways to create an outdoor kitchen that will be the envy of the neighborhood–and make you wonder how you can ever go back to standard, indoor cooking again.

Brown Jordan Outdoor kitchens

Stainless steel outdoor kitchen cabinets take the quality–and the style to the next level. Plus they hold up incredibly well to the elements that come along with outdoor living.

Brown Jordan Outdoor kitchens

Our dream outdoor kitchen appliance? A poolside pizza oven! Or maybe a smoker outside the sunroom.

Brown Jordan Outdoor kitchens

Just add a little sun, a few friends, and your outdoor space is party ready all year round! If you could design your dream outdoor kitchen, what would your essentials be?

Thanks for making Design Chic a part of your day. We hope it’s great!

Slightly South of Simple

What People are Saying About Slightly South of Simple:

“Kristy Woodson Harvey really knows how to tell a southern tale. Every single time her stories unwind gently, like a soft wind in Georgia, then that wind catches you off guard and throws you into her characters’ tumultuous lives. Slightly South of Simple is the same. One gracious, old home inherited from Grandma, one mother who has so many secrets if the walls talked they would pour out like lemonade on a hot summer day, and three headstrong sisters, all working their way through the chaotic mess and joy of life, together. I loved it.”     New York Times bestselling author Cathy Lamb

But, of course, there’s nothing like getting back home.

When it comes to the heart of the home, counters play such an important part in the overall look.

In Good Taste: Amy Berry Interior Designer

entrance with Bunny Williams round table of Amy Berry Interior

We could tell pretty much everything we needed to know about Amy Berry’s style from her skirt and her dog. When we heard that she was one of House Beautiful’s “next wave” designers, we weren’t even a little bit surprised.

Good taste is pretty clear at first sight.

And one glimpse at any of Amy’s perfectly curated rooms, and we could tell that she was the kind of designer whose rooms we would watch, study and come back to again and again.

In addition to giving us Spring Redesign Fever, she has also given us puppy fever. Have you ever seen a face this sweet?

A hoard or flowers can only make a home more beautiful. We can only imagine how beautiful these will be around the house.

Speaking of starting the day out on the right foot, this closet is completely stunning!

And you know how we feel about a built-in bunk. A built-in bunk with Hermes blankets is almost too good!

This office is the perfect place to work and play. We love how the storage space is maximized.

An acrylic crib is oh-so chic.

This menagerie is too, too cute. And all the little clothes are so precious!

Too sweet for words!

We love a Blabla mobile better than about anything. Will’s was made of Carolina blue rams, a very appropriate gift for a family of Tar Heels. We aren’t sure which of Amy’s rooms we love the most. The good news is, we don’t have to choose just one! Which is your favorite?

Thanks for stopping by today. We always love seeing you!
