Good morning, chic readers! We wait every single year for the unveiling of the Southern Living Idea House. It’s always chic and always full of inspiration, but we have to say that this one might have been our very favorite yet.

If you’re a big fan of before and afters (guilty!) then you have to go over to Southern Living and check out the befores. They will blow you away!

We are also particularly excited that this show house is in Austin, Texas. We have never been to Austin, Texas but will be going on THE SOUTHERN SIDE OF PARADISE book tour for a mother-daughter spa weekend! Massages, mani/pedis… Oh, and I’ll be speaking too! We’re super excited about touring around the Live Music Capital of the World! (Wouldn’t you think that was Nashville. Us too.)

We have to be honest: There wasn’t a lot redeeming about this house before. Plenty of architectural details and a unique features (these kitchen walls, anyone?) turned it into something to talk about!

As I said, we’ve never actually been to Austin, but we get the feeling that it has that fun, funky, eclectic vibe. And this house matches that absolutely perfectly. The mix of the antique, new and totally unique in this home mirror that perfectly.

Slanted interior ceilings add so much charm and make for the coziest sleeping spaces we know of!

The variety of pinks in this bedroom is so darling. We can’t get enough pink! (BTW, we have this shell nightstand and are kind of obsessed with it.)

Mudrooms are pretty much the best idea of the 21st century. (Did they have them before the 21st century?) They pave the way for a neat, organized home–and we can’t wait to have one when our remodel is finished!

Southern Living Idea House porch

Anywhere in the South, porch sitting is pretty much mandatory. And with a porch like this, why wouldn’t it be?

We hope you loved this gorgeous Southern Living Idea House as much as we did!

Here’s What’s Next from the Murphy Women:

From internationally bestselling author and “rising star of Southern fiction” (Mary Alice Monroe, New York Times bestselling author) Kristy Woodson Harvey comes the third novel in her Peachtree Bluff series, in which a secret threatens the tight-knit bond between a trio of sisters and their mother.

With the man of her dreams back in her life and all three of her daughters happy, Ansley Murphy should be content. But she can’t help but feel like it’s all a little too good to be true.

Meanwhile, youngest daughter and actress Emerson, who is recently engaged and has just landed the role of a lifetime, seemingly has the world by the tail. Only, something she can’t quite put her finger on is worrying her—and it has nothing to do with her recent health scare.

When two new women arrive in Peachtree Bluff—one who has the potential to wreck Ansley’s happiness and one who could tear Emerson’s world apart—everything is put in perspective. And after secrets that were never meant to be told come to light, the powerful bond between the Murphy sisters and their mother comes crumbling down, testing their devotion to each other and forcing them to evaluate the meaning of family.

With Kristy Woodson Harvey’s signature charm, wit, and heart, The Southern Side of Paradise is another masterful Peachtree Bluff novel that proves she is a “Southern writer with staying power” (Booklist).

While I still love to celebrate my birthday for, well, the entire month, like any normal person, with dinners and wine with friends and trips and presents and too much cake, after a fun, fun, fun summer of lots of events and tons of guests and just the right amount of sun and salt and sand (because there’s never enough, is there?) I think what I’d like most for my birthday is to sit on my front porch.

It’s a pretty boring and simple request, but if there’s any time to reflect on your front porch, a birthday is the time to do it.

I insisted the cake on Friday and present opening on Saturday also take place outside because even though it’s hard for presents to get better, they actually are even better with a sunset in the background and a perfect summer breeze.

Speaking of grandmothers, my two have had a huge impact on my life. (If you want to know more, check out this article I wrote about my grandmother’s pearls for Parade.) And I think it is these family relationships, the respect and love among multiple generations of women, that are a huge part of what makes writing about the South so much fun.

I am having the best time seeing my readers on The Secret to Southern Charm tour and cannot thank you enough for all of your support. You are AMAZING!  Take a peek at my tour here.  I’d love to see you along the way!

A Chic Seaside Retreat–With Plenty of Southern Charm

seaside entrance

The Secret to Southern Charm has officially out in the world. You can pick up your copy at your local bookstore, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Target or online at Amazon or any of your other favorite retailers. In the meantime, we wanted you to explore the home of my interior designer main character, Ansley Murphy, and get a little better feel for her aesthetic.

seaside living room

We picture Ansley’s aesthetic to be light, bright, streamlined and coastally chic.

seaside dining room

In the historic, fictional town of Peachtree Bluff, Georgia, Ansley designs not only the yachts coming in and out of the harbor, but also the historic homes that line the picturesque downtown.

seaside dining room

When Ansley’s three daughters come home–grandchildren in tow–that can only mean one thing: lots of family dinners! This is just the type of comfortable yet chic dining room that Ansley would love.

seaside living room

In her own home and in her redesigns, Ansley’s aesthetic is very natural with well-chosen pops of pretty colors. This green and yellow is absolutely lovely.

seaside dinng room

Wide-plank hardwood floors and windows that let in plenty of light are hallmarks of some of Ansley’s prettiest redesigns.

seaside bedroom

Of course, with all of those kids home, Ansley’s bedrooms are getting quite a bit of use! We picture this as the perfect master retreat where Ansley can get away from it all…

seaside bedroom

And a sweet blue color palette is perfect for soothing Sloane’s nerves while her husband is deployed.

seaside bedroom

A chic–and a touch Bohemian–canopy bed would suit Emerson, the youngest, actress daughter’s personality to a tee. We love the mix of antique and new!

seaside porch

But the best part of Ansley’s house? This gorgeous, waterfront porch, of course, where she can sit with her daughters and her mother and sort through all the big decisions they are making over the year that will change their lives–and their family–forever.

We want to thank you for being such loyal readers of Design Chic and hope that you will take the time to read The Secret to Southern Charm. It’s perfect for lounging beach- or poolside or a gift for Mother’s Day, graduation, wedding guests or bridesmaids!

Don’t forget to pick up your copy of my latest title, The Secret to Southern Charm from your local bookstore, Barnes & Noble, Amazon, or anywhere books are sold!
