A Chic Seaside Retreat–With Plenty of Southern Charm

seaside entrance

The Secret to Southern Charm has officially out in the world. You can pick up your copy at your local bookstore, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Target or online at Amazon or any of your other favorite retailers. In the meantime, we wanted you to explore the home of my interior designer main character, Ansley Murphy, and get a little better feel for her aesthetic.

We picture Ansley’s aesthetic to be light, bright, streamlined and coastally chic.

In the historic, fictional town of Peachtree Bluff, Georgia, Ansley designs not only the yachts coming in and out of the harbor, but also the historic homes that line the picturesque downtown.

When Ansley’s three daughters come home–grandchildren in tow–that can only mean one thing: lots of family dinners! This is just the type of comfortable yet chic dining room that Ansley would love.

In her own home and in her redesigns, Ansley’s aesthetic is very natural with well-chosen pops of pretty colors. This green and yellow is absolutely lovely.

Wide-plank hardwood floors and windows that let in plenty of light are hallmarks of some of Ansley’s prettiest redesigns.

Of course, with all of those kids home, Ansley’s bedrooms are getting quite a bit of use! We picture this as the perfect master retreat where Ansley can get away from it all…

And a sweet blue color palette is perfect for soothing Sloane’s nerves while her husband is deployed.

A chic–and a touch Bohemian–canopy bed would suit Emerson, the youngest, actress daughter’s personality to a tee. We love the mix of antique and new!

But the best part of Ansley’s house? This gorgeous, waterfront porch, of course, where she can sit with her daughters and her mother and sort through all the big decisions they are making over the year that will change their lives–and their family–forever.

We want to thank you for being such loyal readers of Design Chic and hope that you will take the time to read The Secret to Southern Charm. It’s perfect for lounging beach- or poolside or a gift for Mother’s Day, graduation, wedding guests or bridesmaids!

Don’t forget to pick up your copy of my latest title, The Secret to Southern Charm from your local bookstore, Barnes & Noble, Amazon, or anywhere books are sold!

House Tour: Carolina Cottage

Janie Molster Designs

Good morning, chic readers! We don’t know how the weather is where you are, but the past couple days here have been warm, sunny and absolutely gorgeous! We are having major Spring fever, savoring every second outside–and hoping that that groundhog was wrong and this warm weather is here to stay.

Whether you’re really having summer weather or just dreaming about us, take a little mini-vacation with us today to this beyond fabulous Carolina cottage designed by Janie Molster.

There is nothing like beach cottage, with all those historic touches, to take us back to beach trips of our childhoods.

The thing we love most about this home is how Molster mixes those sweet, nostalgic touches–like wood paneling–with bright updated style.

This island is the perfect spot for sandy feet and pimento cheese sandwiches!

Fresh watermelon and strawberries from a roadside stand become accessories in this kitchen.

Exposed beams and painted floors lend a classic look,

While bright linens lend fun, fresh vacation-worthy appeal.

All I can say is that I wish I had seen this earlier… We had so many pairs of red Keds! What a fun way to incorporate them into the style.

Bold red and pretty marble update this bath, while hexagonal tile remains a throwback to a simpler time that’s still completely on trend.

Nothing says “beach retreat” like a fabulous kids’ room!

Beach towel goals!! We can’t decide which is cuter, the towels or the basket!

At the beach, driftwood really is the best accessory!

This utterly charming, classic exterior ties it all together–and, y’all, that view. This looks like the kind of place that has made a thousand memories and will make a thousand more. Thanks for touring with us today! We hope you love this Carolina cottage as much as we do!

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day!

What Jena Pate of Our Southern Roots is saying about The Secret to Southern Charm!

“Kristy just has a way of capturing the beauty of the Georgia coast through her writing that make you feel like you are sitting right there amongst all the action while you read. The characters are all so well developed and you get attached very quickly.I would obviously recommend picking up Slightly South of Simple if you haven’t already, then pre-order your copy of The Secret to Southern Charm… this book will take you on an emotional roller coaster in the best possible way and leave you wanting more….and impatiently waiting for book three in the series :)” — Jena Pate, Our Southern Roots Blog

House Tour: Peter Pennoyer

We don’t know about you, but we love a cedar shake house. We’re pretty much convinced that you could slap cedar shakes on the ugliest cinderblock building in the world and instantly make it charming.

Peter Pennoyer shingled house

On the flip side, we think everything that Peter Pennoyer designs is so gorgeous that it would be charming even if it were built out of cinderblock.

Fortunately for us, this home is cedar shake and designed by the peerless Peter Pennoyer. It’s a pretty unbeatable combination!

Just peeking inside this lovely home feels restful. We’re instantly transported to a seaside escape made for relaxation and spending long, lazy days recharging and taking a break from the fast pace of the rest of the world.

This beautiful bay window is perfect for taking advantage of every inch of view while still feeling completely traditional and totally lovely.

This dining room proves that architectural details don’t have to be ornate to feel luxurious. The simplicity of the woodwork and built-ins in this room is in keeping with the more casual tone of the house while still making it feel perfectly planned down to the last inch.

From the stylish built-ins to the heavy custom doors, the architectural details in this home give it the feeling of total quality. Antique accents lend that collected feeling to this newer home.

A modern range hood and an antique-feeling island lend a lovely juxtaposition to this large yet cozy kitchen.

There is nothing like a Dutch door to add that homey feeling to a space.

Open shelving and a gardening sink keep clutter out of the kitchen–and ensure that fresh blooms abound all year long.

If we could choose one thing that our homes absolutely have to have, it’s light! These intricate windows add that in high style.

There’s no better accent in a master that feels like a sanctuary than a cozy reading nook. It’s the perfect place for coffee and PJs!

For the ultimate in inspiration, this is the ultimate office! No clutter, just a fabulous view.

We love a garden seat in the bathroom! It’s the perfect spot for storing bath essentials.

A fun, eclectic bar area is perfect for entertaining!

But, if you’re like us, you’d agree that there’s no place like the perfect porch for savoring a beautiful beach day.

We hope you have a fabulous day!
