We talk a lot on Design Chic about combining the old with the new. Grandmother’s silver on your Saarinen table, fun buffet lamps on an antique buffet, a new, shiny bar cart filled with Grandfather’s decanters. There are so many fantastic ways to incorporate the old with the new on the inside. But, on the outside? It’s harder to pull off. Perhaps that’s why we’re so enchanted with Kevin and Lee Kleinhelter’s gorgeous Atlanta home. (We’ve talked about Lee’s Good Taste before.) It’s streamlined and modern but still feels familiar.
And, inside, it gets even better.
We literally love every inch. Take a peek for yourself!
And these barstools? What a find! We can sort of picture how excited Lee must have been when she found these!
That chandelier? Do we even have to say it? Delicate, whimsical… It’s perfect!
One of our favorite things about this house is that it doesn’t “have to” anything. It doesn’t have to feel Hollywood Regency in the kitchen and then carry that through the rest of the house. It exudes the feeling that it was filled with pieces out of true love, not obligation.
We bet every kid in town wants to sleep over in these bunks.
The orange is so good. And not too matchy or contrived.
All that glitters… You know the rest.
We want to have the guts to paint a room black. We really do. But when it’s presented as painting a room black and gold… Well, now we’re thinking we could do it!
The floor is utter brilliance. No one needs to talk us into that!
Coolest ping pong table ever. We want this. And one of those lucite foosball tables. And maybe that sheep. And the painting. We could go on like this for awhile…
Awwww! Why stop now? We want that dog too! What a gorgeous color! So simple. So chic. We mean the room. But the dog too.
Swooning.
On the verge of needing to call the paramedics.
Yellow=love. We are OBSESSED with yellow right now.
Dear Lee Kleinfelter, we know we don’t really know each other, but we’d like to move into this yellow room, please. Or any of the rest of the rooms in this house.
This bathroom feels modern and fresh. But somehow familiar too, right? We think that’s what creating a home is all about!

One of the things we love most about Atlanta is the variety of ways to live. From sprawling estates to the chicest of uptown city living, there is an incredible mix that suits every style and taste.
This gorgeous Atlanta condo by our friend Andrew J. Howard is a perfect example of classic city living done right.
The pied-e-terre might be classically associated with Paris or New York but this chic Atlanta condo feels like just that. Georgia is the Empire State of the South, after all. (It’s amazing what you learn while researching for a series set in Georgia!)
In our humble opinions, Andrew Howard is one of the best of the best when it comes to mixing color and pattern to create a certain feel. In this smaller space, a more subdued color scheme creates a calming yet fun environment.
Here, pattern on the ceiling contributes a touch of whimsy to this beautiful bedroom retreat. This color scheme is perfection–and far from boring.
We’re not sure who else could have combined all of these patterns to create this cohesive look, but, in the hands of Howard, the results are incredible. We love the agate slices on the wall for bringing a touch of the outdoors in.
Even the smallest spaces in this Atlanta condo are perfectly choreographed.
A mix of calming neutrals creates the perfect soothing space for waking up slowly and getting ready to face the day ahead.
The magnificent city view doesn’t hurt either. Even in this tiny outdoor space, Howard remains true to his design scheme and creates a chic and comfortable look perfect for sipping and stargazing. For bringing big style to a smaller place, we think this lovely Atlanta space hits the high notes of style. Thanks, Andrew, for letting us share with our readers!
And thanks, Atlanta, for the warm welcome on the Slightly South of Simple tour. From an amazing event at Boxwoods to a brunch with friends at the Piedmont Driving Club, talking to readers at FoxTale Book Shop and Bookmiser and dinner at Le Bilboquet (with, let’s be honest, just a hint of shopping in between!) it was a fabulous couple of days!
