In Good Taste: Muskoka Living Design 2

With the way the weather has been lately, we’ve been dreaming of cozy fires and charming cabins.

Muskoka Living Design manages to create that perfect cozy, cabin feel by balancing light and bright with darker, more rustic touches

From perfectly stained floors,

To charming buffalo check,

A quintessential “cabin” light fixture,

to a cozy fireplace and a snuggly throw,

Muskoka Living Design creates spaces that feel chic, stylish, bright and airy while still maintaining the feel we love for this sort of weather.

These Ontario designers specialize in “casually sophisticated living,” and, we don’t know about you, but we think they have absolutely nailed it.

Every detail is perfectly choreographed for comfort and livability with so much character.

These open garage doors are perhaps one of the coolest hacks we’ve seen. Talk about bringing the outdoors in!

Now this is a boathouse. It blends seamlessly with the rest of the decor to create a smooth transition from outdoors to in–and a safe home for a most treasured possession.

Does it get any better than this? We don’t think so! Thanks so much for stopping by and making Design Chic a part of your day. We always love seeing you here!

In Good Taste: Brian Brady Design

If, for you, relaxation is all about a water view, then this is the room for you. Interiors as soothing and spectacular as the exteriors make this space feel like and instant vacation.

But we’re learning that when you’re in a space by Brian Brady Design, every day suddenly feels like a holiday.

Chic yet comfortable living spaces seem to be a hallmark of this designer and architect.

And there is no doubt that his work is in good taste.

Architectural details abound in these perfectly curated homes, and the art hanging on the walls is just a beautiful as the touches that make these spaces so unique.

Mixed in with his classical architecture and classic interiors are moments of the unexpected. It is those moments that make these spaces unforgettable.

Leather is a chic staple but can tend to look heavy. These chairs incorporate this favorite in a way that takes up very little visual space.

White and bright is the mainstay of this kitchen, but these unique pendants give the eye an immediate place to go.

This lovely master bedroom incorporates classic blue and white in a way that is soothing, spa like and classic.

A master bedroom sitting room is a luxury not to be squandered. We can’t think of a better place to ease into the day!

When it comes to design, the outside is just as important as the inside. The slate walk is a welcoming touch on this stunning cedar shake cottage.

The only thing better than a gorgeous house is a gorgeous poolhouse! We’d love lounging by this one all summer long!

Nothing says “summer” quite like a fresh coat of white paint. It’s a welcome addition all year long. We are absolutely loving the good taste of this fabulous designer. What about you?

Thanks so much for stopping by! We always love it when you do!

Pinewood Tour and Why You Should Always Talk to Strangers

Good morning, friends! We are so excited to share this fabulous house tour from our friend Lucy at Lucy Williams Interiors. We always love her work and this Pinewood house is no exception. It is the kind of place where you want to gather friends and family to celebrate all the wonderful moments that life has to offer.

Speaking of wonderful moments, we think that one of those moments is meeting new people. Which we did at brunch last weekend. In the “do as I say, not as I do” category, this is a prime example. My parents always told me not to talk to strangers. And they always did.

Now I always do too. Constantly. In elevators. On a train, a plane, waiting in line at the post office. Even in New York. I know.

So, as we were sitting outside on a beautiful morning at Beaufort Grocery Company, one of our favorite Sunday brunch spots, we started chatting with some strangers. It was January in North Carolina, so we only assumed they were from North Carolina too, had day tripped from somewhere nearby.

When we found out that they were from New Orleans, we were more than a little surprised because, well, most people come here for the summer. They don’t realize how wonderful the stillness of the winter can be. Nevertheless, we recently visited New Orleans so I could take part in their Women’s National Book Association event, and everyone, everywhere we went was so incredibly friendly to us that we couldn’t help but mention it.

We could tell right off that these were those kind of New Orleans people. Warm and welcoming and so nice.

It was a Sunday. In January. And those are a little slow around here. So we had them over for drinks, of course.

And between the Rose and the pimento cheese, we laughed and shared stories and shared mutual friends–and then, in no time at all, became them as well.

And now next time we go to New Orleans, we won’t be staying at the Windsor Court. We’ll be staying with our new friends. (It really can’t be said enough. New Orleans has the best people. Food too.)

And that is why you should always talk to strangers. We have met some of our most favorite people that way. Because after you talk they aren’t strangers any more. So then you really aren’t breaking any rules at all.

Besides, there are times when the rules can be bent. Design is one of those times. Because, just like with new friends, if it feels right, it usually is. We think you’ll agree that this fabulous Lucy Williams home feels pretty all-around wonderful. We hope your Wednesday does too!

More about my new book, SLIGHTLY SOUTH OF SIMPLE

Also, if you want to know a little more about my new novel, SLIGHTLY SOUTH OF SIMPLE (Simon & Schuster, April 25, 2017) take a peek at the video below! (It’s only like 90 seconds. No major commitments here!)

In Good Taste:Park and Oak Design

Even their name conjures good feelings. Park and Oak Design. It sounds like a firm that brings the outdoors in. That creates simple yet beautiful design schemes that feel totally livable.

It’s kind of like judging a book by its cover. You’re really not supposed to but, sometimes, the cover does give you a really accurate glimpse into what the book is about.

In this case, we judged a firm by its name. And like that book cover, it did give us a pretty accurate glimpse into what was to come.

If we had to pick one word to describe Oak and Park Design, we think we’d choose… airy. (It’s hard to choose one word, especially when you’re used to getting 85,000 to describe things.)

There’s a minimalistic air about this firm’s work that we find incredibly appealing and totally refreshing.

A modern streak runs through all of these designs that pairs well with traditional touches.

And you know how we love our subway tile!

We love how simple this kitchen is. You can never go wrong with black, white and a touch of natural fiber.

It took us a while to warm up to the idea, but we are now big fans of mixing metals. This kitchen is case and point!

These pendants are perfection.

Speaking of pendants, this is one of our favorites. It’s even more stunning in real life!

Saarinen tables are always a favorite. Sleek, modern and totally functional, they’re a great pick for a breakfast room, especially one that isn’t huge.

The right combination of high and low, rustic and modern, this gorgeous bathroom is the perfect mix of favorite elements blended together in just the right way.

A great wallpaper can totally make a bathroom. We love the vintage feel of this marble sink. The simplicity of these fixtures is a perfect complement to the fun wallpaper. All in all, we think you’ll agree that the work of Park and Oak is in good taste. Which is your favorite room?

We hope you’re having a great day and staying warm!

Good morning, readers! We hope you are having a great week and are getting used to the time change. If you have little ones like I do, I trust that you have extended your morning coffee to an all-day affair. (Or perhaps you’ve opted to stay in bed so as not to have to hear about the election… Happy Election Day, by the way!)
