Blank to Beautiful: Viola Shipman

Viola Shipman fans, rejoice! I had the BEST time with my buddy Wade Rouse, who pens fiction under the name Viola Shipman, talking about his new book The Heirloom Garden, how his creative process works and, yes, which was his favorite Real Housewife to interview back in his days at People magazine!

Publisher’s Weekly said of The Heirloom Garden: “The emotional scars left by war unite two women, generations apart, in Shipman’s sentimental family saga…Shipman’s tale successfully captures these women’s resilience and their hopeful desire for new beginnings.”

Check out our video and then head over to Instagram for a chance to win a copy of The Heirloom Garden AND Feels Like Falling! Also, check out the wonderful Michigan cottage Wade shares with husband Gary Edwards.

ICYMI: Feels Like Falling is a USA Today Bestseller!

And an American Book Association Bestseller… And a Publisher’s Weekly Bestseller… And a Bookscan Bestseller… And it’s all because of YOU! So alllll the thank yous, my wonderful readers, for taking what could have been a lemon of a launch week and making it into the sweetest lemonade! I am truly wowed by all of you.

In-Stock and Ready to Ship!

If you haven’t read Feels Like Falling yet, and you’re looking to avoid all the out-of-stocks, I have a few recommendations for you!

Thank you again for all your support!! I am so grateful for each and every one of you!

Feels Like Falling House Tour: Carrier & Co.

Day 3 of the Feels Like Falling launch (And day 10 of the Feels Like Falling Virtual Tour!) is officially underway.

One of my favorite parts of being on tour is talking about the setting of Feels Like Falling, a fictional town called Cape Carolina, which is an amalgamation of Morehead City, NC, Atlantic Beach, NC and Beaufort, NC, where I live.

Andrew, the very charming and way-too-young-to-be-appropriate tennis pro who helps bolster Gray’s bruised spirit after her separation from her husband, is living at his parents’ house for the summer.

As Gray describes it:

It was big. And beautiful. And right on the beach. We sat on the built-in bench on the front deck, having a cocktail before dinner, watching the sunset. I snuggled up under his arm, and he kissed my head. “You know, Gray,” he said, “this has been the best summer of my life.” He winked. “And I know you want this to be a summer fling, but the idea of having to not be with you—”

I put my finger up to his lips. “Shhh. Let’s just enjoy the sunset.”

He nodded and looked back toward the water breaking and crashing to the shore just over the dunes, the sea oats waving in the wind.

One of our favorite things is envisioning the homes where my characters live, and, for Andrew’s parents, June and Henry, something sophisticated, chic and a little bit coastal fits the bill perfectly.

Designed by Carrier & Company via Dering Hall and photographed by Pieter Estersohn Photography, this stunning coastal home is sophisticated enough for Andrew’s parents,

With a stunning chef’s kitchen,

A stately master bedroom,

And plenty of guest rooms to hold their son–

And all his friends–

(And, if they have their way, maybe even some future grandchildren.), it’s the kind of place where generations of memories can be made.

With plenty of space for lots of fun,

A peerless view,

And the kind of porch we’d want to be on all the time, we can envision Gray and Andrew spending summer nights in Cape Carolina right here.

Thanks so much, friends, for your incredible support of not only Design Chic, but of my writing career as well. Seeing Design Chic readers turned Kristy Woodson Harvey readers when I’m touring, even if it is virtually,  is one of the biggest thrills for me! You are amazing, and we love and appreciate you so much!

Launch of Blank to Beautiful Video Series TODAY

blank to beautiful

Good morning, friends! Today is a banner day on Design Chic! We are launching our new video interview series, Blank to Beautiful, where we’ll be interviewing designers, writers, artists and creatives about the glorious transformation from blank to beautiful. (Feel free to share the video if you’d like!)

Because today is the launch of my sixth novel, Feels Like Falling, Mom (Beth) did something she’s not too terribly fond of, and took the the camera to interview me about my creative process, my childhood aspirations, the craziest part of launching a book without a tour and lots of fun mother/daughter things. It’s actually really cool to be interviewed by your mom! I might take her on the road with me when we get to go out again!(And, also, if you’re thinking we’re crazy to launch a book and a new series, we know. But why not, right?!)

Thanks, Design Chic readers, for all your support over the past few years, and these past six books. If you haven’t read one of my books yet, but you’ve been curious, today would be a great time to start! I’m usually on week two of a six-week book tour right about now, traveling around the country and meeting thousands of readers in person, so this launch, needless to say, is going to be a little bit different!

Parade, Working Mother and SheReads called it one of the most anticipated reads of 2020, Frolic and Get Literary want you to read it for Spring, Mary Kay Andrews picked it for her 2020 reading challenge–and called it “your next summer sizzler”–and the Southern Independent Booksellers Association awarded it an “Okra Pick,” meaning they want to hand sell it all season long!

And don’t forget:  Books make great MOTHER’S DAY GIFTS!

Pick up your copy at your favorite local bookstore, Bookshop.org, Amazon or wherever books or sold.

From “the next major voice in Southern fiction” (Elin Hilderbrand) and the bestselling author of the Peachtree Bluff series comes an odd-couple tale of friendship that asks just how much our past choices define our happiness.

It’s summertime on the North Carolina coast and the livin’ is easy.

Unless, that is, you’ve just lost your mother to cancer, your sister to her extremist husband, and your husband to his executive assistant. Meet Gray Howard. Right when Gray could use a serious infusion of good karma in her life, she inadvertently gets a stranger, Diana Harrington, fired from her job at the local pharmacy.

Diana Harrington’s summer isn’t off to the greatest start either: Hours before losing her job, she broke up with her boyfriend and moved out of their shared house with only a worn-out Impala for a bed. Lucky for her, Gray has an empty guest house and a very guilty conscience.

With Gray’s kindness, Diana’s tide begins to turn. But when her first love returns, every secret from her past seems to resurface all at once. And, as Gray begins to blaze a new trail, she discovers, with Diana’s help, that what she envisioned as her perfect life may not be what she wants at all.

In her warmest, wisest novel yet, Kristy Woodson Harvey delivers a discerning portrait of modern womanhood through two vastly different lenses. Feels Like Falling is a beach bag essential for Harvey fans—and for a new generation of readers.

Also, for the first time ever, we are hosting a Feels Like Falling Photo Contest! From now until May 3:

1. Take a photo of Feels Like Falling

2. Post on Instagram or Facebook

3. Use the hashtag #feelslikefalling so I can find your photo and tag me if you can!

4. I’ll repost them and then…

One grand prize winner will receive a $100 Target Gift Card and 5 runners up will receive an exclusive Feels Like Falling Candle. You photos can be pretty or funny, cute or cuddly, crazy or tame… It doesn’t matter! Whether you’re a reader or an influencer, you can enter!

Thanks so much again for all your support! Next week I’ll be interviewing our first designer–Andrew Howard about what inspires him, his favorite projects and creating his dream home. You know how much we adore him, he’s funny as all get out, and we can’t wait to give you behind-the-scenes look at how he transforms spaces from blank to beautiful!

Get FEELS LIKE FALLING today from your favorite independent bookstore, online retailer or wherever books are sold. Friends!

Amazon is temporarily sold out of paperbacks but of course have the kindle available. (Thank you, by the way!) They’ll be back soon, but,

Good morning, chic readers! I can’t believe it, but my sixth novel, Feels Like Falling, officially releases tomorrow! If you’re looking to add to your bookshelves–or your beach bag–I’d love it if you’d check it out!

Amber InteriorsTessa Neustadt Photography

Speaking of bookshelves, they are, hands down, one of our favorite parts of any design scheme.

But getting the perfect blend of books and accessories, deciding to go monochrome or to mix it up, can be tricky.

Michael Wells Photography

We adore the look of these gorgeous volumes grouped by color. (Feels Like Falling has a stunning blue beach cover and a fun, bold blue and red spine!)

Andrew J. Howard

But a neutral palette also lends a clean, streamlined look and, as these shelves prove, can still be eye-catching.

Rafe Churchill

To us, nothing is quite as fabulous as a library ladder–except for maybe these gorgeous library lights!

Amber InteriorsTessa Neustadt

And, of course, a cozy sitting area where one can curl up with a good book is practically mandatory!
