Things We Love: Meaningful Collections

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

When you live on the coast, you have a lot of time to think about which things in your home are most important to you.

At least once a year there is some sort of hurricane or major storm and, not wanting to be stuck on an island indefinitely, we evacuate. (It was the deal I made with my husband when we moved! I’m pretty sure he would never leave…)

Generally, we don’t give it much thought.

But everyone has those things that are most important to them, those special, sentimental pieces that represent family or trips or happy times, the non-negotiables that they pack up and take when a disaster seems imminent because they would be heartbroken if they lost them.

It could be signed books, family silver, favorite, irreplaceable photos taken during a time when clouds lived in the sky, not on our cell phones and laptops.

Collections, if you will, that don’t fall into the “it’s just stuff” category.

collections of blue and white
Suzanne Kasler

It could be a collection of treasured blue and white china, collected over generations and passed down or simply gathered through years.

Baskets adorning a wall

Precious tortoise boxes, each symbolizing a cherished vacation, memory or special occasion,

Charming Cornishware given piece by piece as wedding gifts from family and friends.

collections of plates
Architectural Digest

Or maybe even family china or linens, repurposed and much loved. For me, for years, it was nothing. But, when Hurricane Florence came, and maybe now, ever after, I took two treasures: an antique lapdesk and an early 1800s mother-of-pearl and sterling dessert set that belonged to my husband’s grandmother and was one of my favorite wedding gifts. It was far too beautiful for floodwaters.

Are you a collector–or a wannabe collector? What would you collect if you were going to start?

Feels Like falling by Kristy Woodson Harvey

Feels Like Falling preorders are rolling in! Get yours today!

More About Feels Like Falling…

From “the next major voice in Southern fiction” (Elin Hilderbrand) and the bestselling author of the Peachtree Bluff series comes an odd couple tale of friendship that asks just how much our past choices define our happiness.

It’s summertime on the North Carolina coast and the livin’ is easy.

Unless, that is, you’ve just lost your mother to cancer, your sister to her evangelical husband, and your husband to his executive assistant. Meet Gray Howard. Right when Gray could use a serious infusion of good karma in her life, she inadvertently gets a stranger fired from her job at the local pharmacy.

Diana Harrington’s summer isn’t off to the greatest start either: Hours before losing her job, she broke up with her boyfriend and moved out of their shared house with only a busted Impala for a bed. Lucky for her, Gray has an empty guest house and a very guilty conscience.

With Gray’s kindness, Diana’s tide begins to turn, but when the one that got away comes back, every secret from her past seems to resurface all at once. And, as Gray begins to blaze a new trail, she discovers, with Diana’s help, that what she envisioned as her perfect life may not be what she wants at all.

In her warmest, wittiest, and wisest novel yet, Kristy Woodson Harvey delivers a discerning portrait of modern womanhood through two vastly different lenses. Feels Like Falling is a beach bag essential for Harvey fans—and for a new generation of readers.

Leontine Linens from Jane Scott Hodges Home

Heirloom quality and forever chic, we didn’t think we could love anything more than Leontine Linens. We didn’t think we could love anything more until we saw the founder of Leontine Linen, Jane Scott Hodges‘s, fabulous New Orleans home, that is!

Jane Scott told One Kings Lane that her “theme for this year has been confidence.”

As such, she and her husband decided to buck convention and make this fabulous historic home something that would suit the needs of their family, friends and entertaining lifestyle.

As big fans of breaking the rules, we’d say that they did so the very best way: beautifully and well. This gorgeous green? Case and point.

Finding the Perfect Bench for the End of the Bed

blue and white bedroom
Robert A M Stern Architects, Steven Gambrel Design via AD

So many details go into making a bedroom feel warm, cozy, restful and relaxed.

The linens, of course, are critical.

The curtains are key.

And, if you’re lucky enough to have a sitting area, making it comfortable and spa-like is a priority.

Right now, one of the things we’re looking for is a fabulous bench for the end of a bed. Well, at least we thought we wanted a bench… But now that we see this loveseat we might be rethinking things since this one is so charming! Furthermore, Phoebe Howard always gets it right!

The great thing about the end-of-the-bed bench is that so, so many things work really well.

A pair is charming and sweet–and perfect for two people to put their shoes on in the morning.

If you’re not the curl-up-in-bed-and-watch-TV type, a little settee is another great spot to watch or read or relax before turning in…

twin bedroom
One Kings Lane

While a small bench at the end of a twin bed gives a finished touch, especially when you don’t want to use a footboard, we love trunks for toy storage at the end of twins as well!

I have a little French bench in a fun fabric like this at the end of my canopy bed. Don’t these chairs look positively luscious? Pale pink is such a soothing accent color for a bedroom.

It seems like the fun–and really, really hard–thing about picking seating for the end of a bed is that you really can’t go wrong! These little leather director’s stools are so charming. We love, love them for a boy’s bedroom, or a guest bedroom like this one. With all these choices, we were originally thinking of doing an upholstered stool at the end of the guest bedroom bed, but, taking the TV watching into account, now we’re thinking about something a little more comfortable because of all these great rooms.

What would you choose–or did you choose–for the end of your bed?
