House Tour: Marshall Watson’s East Hampton Home

East Hampton house tour

When Mom and I started Design Chic in 2010, we thought we were going to blog for one year. The major purpose of Design Chic was going to be to share things that we loved with each other.  We certainly never expected anyone to actually read it or anything crazy like that. Nine years and several hundred thousand followers later we never in a million years could have imagined that we would have met so many incredible, talented, amazing people through this website.

Marshall Watson entrance hall

One of our favorite people we’ve met in the last nine years? Hands-down, Marshall Watson, whose stunning East Hampton home we are touring today.

We have long been amazed by Marshall’s ability to shift from one style to another very different one with effortless ease, making each home uniquely suited to its owners, for years. Nowhere is that fact better evidenced than in his gorgeous book, The Art of Elegance. (If you don’t have it, treat yourself today! You’ll thank us!)

When Marshall and his husband Paul Sparks made the trek all the way to Beaufort, NC, where I live, to speak about The Art of Elegance, we recognized immediately that Marshall was as gracious and kind (and fun!) as we had thought.

Even still, we never could have imagined what happened next.

Marshall was incredibly instrumental in making me a part of East Hampton Authors Night a few weeks ago, and even more amazingly, he opened his home for the most idyllic dinner party you could imagine. A long table spread across Marshall and Paul’s porch, steps from their enviable garden with the cool late summer breeze coming off of Gardiner’s Bay, which sparkled just beyond.

And, if you think Marshall and Paul’s home is stunning in pictures, you should see it in real life. The couples’ finds are paired with beautiful pieces from Marshall’s own collection–like these intricately designed end tables and coffee table–to create a truly one-of-a-kind look that is supremely elegant.

Marshall Watson Interiors

Marshall never forgets about the ceiling, as is evidenced in almost every room of his home,

And unique, well thought out touches, like this antique chandelier that creates a candlelit wonderland, reflect the couple’s sentiments and style.

Lovely Delft tiles grace many of the rooms in the home, creating unity and a nod to the sea beyond the door.

Among the glamour, though, this house doesn’t ever take itself too seriously.

Lyrics of Marshall’s father’s favorite song, Blue Skies, add a meaningful and slightly whimsical element to the well-appointed chef’s kitchen.

Marshall Watson Interior Design guest bedroom

Guests are treated like royalty in a truly lovely guest bedroom, complete with Swedish furnishings–

And luscious linens.

Even in the bathrooms, not a single detail is overlooked.

And in the gorgeous master, the view beyond the windows of idyllic Gardiner’s Bay is the most stunning focal point imaginable.

This is hands-down my favorite shot of our incredible evening, taken at the very end of the night. It makes me laugh every time I see it!

Marshall at the helm of the gorgeous table he created. Many of the flowers are from Marshall and Paul’s garden and the delicious meal–cooked by Marshall–was also largely grown in their own backyard. Amazing!

Mom and me having a blast!

Needless to say, we hope to return to East Hampton very soon. Marshall and Paul, thank you so much for opening your stunning home to us–and for sharing it with Design Chic readers today!

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day! We always love seeing you here!

House Tour: East Hampton Chic by Marshall Watson

Good morning, chic readers! If you’re in the mood for a beach vacation, come along with us today! If you’ve followed Design Chic for any length of time you know that we are obsessed with Marshall Watson‘s peerless work. (And really just Marshall, in general, truth be told.)

Watson’s own East Hampton escape is the stuff that dream home fantasies are made of. I’ve seen it in pictures, and I am beside myself that I get to go to Watson and his husband Paul Sparks’s weekend retreat in real life!

I will be appearing at the East Hampton Author’s Night on August 10, and Watson and Sparks are incredibly graciously hosting my Author Dinner afterward.

I can’t decide what I’m most excited about, but I think it’s the garden. If you want a little sneak peek, check out this gorgeous article in Galerie Magazine. See what I mean? As someone with a decidedly non-green thumb, I can’t even imagine…

What we marvel most over when it comes to Watson’s work is how diverse it is. He truly creates magic in every space he designs, but in a way that is completely suited to the homeowners’ tastes.

This stunning East Hampton home has a personality very different from Watson’s own, while still maintaining his signature sense of balance, light and emphasis on the details.

Architectural details on the ceiling and a fun backsplash, for instance, create instant personality in this kitchen, while classic cabinetry and white marble lend staying power to the look.

Touches of coastal influence punctuate the design scheme, while an overarching sense of serenity and calm pervades, as if wordlessly reminding every person who enters that he or she is on vacation.

Simply touring this chic retreat today has felt like, well, a day at the beach! A quick nap in this perfect bedroom wouldn’t hurt either…

If you haven’t picked up Watson’s book, The Art of Elegance, don’t wait another minute. Watson’s breadth of talent is so vast that it’s like having several books in one. It’s a classic in its own time.

Thanks so much for stopping by Design Chic today. We always love seeing you here!

Marshall Watson Visits Beaufort, NC!

Marshall Watson
Photographer: Francesco Lagnese

Good morning, chic readers! Did you have a good weekend? We sure did. It was full of fun related to the Beaufort Historical Association Homes Tour, but the best part of all, the icing on the cake, was a fabulous brunch in the yard of a gorgeous Beaufort Home with our friend and one of our most favorite designers, Marshall Watson.

Marshall Watson
Photographer: Francesco Lagnese

You’ve heard us rave about his incredible range as a designer before, the way that he can take on any project, in any town, for any family and make it reflect the owners’ wants and needs.

And with his background, it’s no wonder, really.

From a career as a fine painter to studying design at Stanford to studying at FIT, Watson has more than his share of credentials.

Photographer: Alise O’Brien

But, as with all those at the top of their field, there is also something in Waston’s work that cannot be taught, a keen eye and natural understanding of symmetry and balance, of what goes into the story that a home is telling.

Watson told the audience that he draws on his background as an actor (He was one of the stars of As the World Turns in the ’80s among his many other acting credentials!), where he really learned to disappear into the character, to really put a lot of himself aside and focus only on what his clients need and want.

Even still, from Mexico to 5th Avenue, Salt Lake City to St. Louis, a sense of timeless elegance and style unifies all of Watson’s projects.

His work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Veranda, House Beautiful, Luxe, House and Garden, Traditional Homes, Hamptons Cottages and Gardens and the New York Times. He has also been featured in New York Spaces, Metropolitan Home, The Chicago Tribune, as well as being a regular design columnist for the Southampton Press.

He received Traditional Home’s “Designer of the Year” award and has been featured on Luxe’s Gold List.

Flower magazine calls him a “Master of Elegance,”

Doris Leslie Blau says he is, “one of America’s most respected design industry leaders.”

And all of that is true, of course. But New York Social Diary’s proclamation that he is “kind to the core” may resonate most of all.

The Fabulous Freestanding Tub

Metcalfe Design

Good morning, chic readers! We hope you had an amazing weekend! We know it isn’t the official start of summer, but once school is out, it always feels like it to us.

And summer is the perfect time for catching up with friends, taking that much-needed vacation and finding the time for the rest and relaxation you missed out on throughout the year.

Verandah House

One of our favorite ways to relax in our homes is in the comfort of a fabulous freestanding tub.

freestanding tub
Cloth and Kind

Just add bubbles and good book for a relaxing night at home. Of course, installation is always something to consider. For our Aussie friends, Fix-It Right is a full service plumber serving all of Australia, including Melbourne and Sydney.

Of course, finding the right tub is only one part of the equation.

The hardware can completely change the look of a freestanding tub–and change its functionality. A faucet with a shower attachment is very useful for cleaning large tubs easily.

New England Home Magazine

Our favorite thing about freestanding tubs is that they can be positioned in front of windows to take full advantage of a gorgeous view.

And they come in so many different styles and colors to complement pretty much any bathroom scheme.

We love a tub in the center of the room, especially a round or oddly shaped one that couldn’t have a bathtub otherwise.

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

For a beautiful way to add character to a bathroom, we love a clawfoot tub like this one. It adds instant history! Are you a fan of freestanding tubs?

Thank you so much for making Design Chic a part of your day. We always love seeing you here!
