7 Favorite Soothing Bedroom Retreats

Serena & Lily

Good morning, dear friends. We hope you are all safe and well this Monday.

Serena & Lily

With everything going on, it seems like we are all going to be spending quite a bit more time at home

Serena & Lily

For us, that means taking the time to tackle some of those lingering decor projects.

Serena & Lily

And attempting to hold second grade at the dining room table. (Thank goodness it isn’t high school! I don’t remember a bit of Calculus…)

Serena & Lily

With the world spinning out of control–or just slowing down, depending on how you think about it–we thought today would be the perfect time to focus on soothing, gorgeous master retreats.

Because, after all, a good night’s sleep is one of the foundations of wellness.

Serena & Lily

Water blues always make us feel calm and rested,

While plenty of light creates a clean, open space,

Serena & Lily

And texture and fun patterns add interest.

And if the master suite happens to have a fabulous view, why, all the better! We feel more relaxed just looking at these lovely, soothing spaces. We hope you feel the same.

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day! We always love seeing you here!

If you’re looking for a relaxing quarantine activity, reading is always a great choice! My entire Peachtree Bluff Series is out and available now!

House Tour: Atlanta Townhouse Perfect for Entertaining

When Thanksgiving rolls around, we always think of Atlanta. Growing up, we used to head to Atlanta every Thanksgiving, spend the blessed turkey day itself with my aunt (Mom’s sister), uncle and cousins and then brave the crowds at Lenox and Phipps on Black Friday to get all our Christmas shopping done in one, fell swoop.

We’re not sure we have that kind of shopping stamina these days–although there was that fateful Thanksgiving night/Black Friday morning at midnight that Dad and I braved the line out the door at midnight at Walmart to get that one Christmas gift that little Will was wanting most, since it was coming in on the Black Friday truck and would surely be gone by the morning.

It was probably my most selfless parenting moment. And it hasn’t happened since.

This year, Florence has us out of our house and in a rental for Thanksgiving and the foreseeable future beyond.

While we are going to miss the holiday at home so much, it will be fun to be at my childhood home, surrounded by our large extended family, to celebrate one of my very favorite holidays.

There is, as always, so much to be thankful for!

This stunning Atlanta townhouse, designed by Melanie Turner, is another perfect spot for hosting one of the best celebrations of the year.

With soothing and beautiful bedrooms perfect for gifts,

A stunning bathroom for relaxing when it’s all over,

Perfect finishes everywhere you look,

And beautiful views to boot,

This is the kind of home that is perfect for savoring every day, all year long–and remembering what you’re truly grateful for.

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day! We always love it when you stop by!

House Tour: Midtown Atlanta Beauty

Andrew Howard living room

The city pied-a-terre is a right up there with the beach house or the mountain estate when it comes to dream houses.

Andrew Howard coffee table

And when it comes to pied-a-terres, this one, designed by one of our very favorite (and funniest!) designers, Andrew Howard, is the cream of the crop.

Andrew Howard kitchen

A Florida resident who has been tapped to bring out the best in some of the most exclusive homes in the Bahamas and beyond, this Atlanta project is just one of many stages on which Howard displays his range as a decorator.

He embraces the sleek and simple that the city demands,

While still inserting his signature playful style to make it family friendly and fun.

Layered patterns and the right blend of color give Howard’s homes a dash of whimsy that is always welcome–and sets his designs apart from the pack.

Unexpected details like bold ceilings and a perfectly imperfect gallery wall make a statement while still allowing the expansive views of the city to take center stage.

When it comes to good design, the details aren’t something, they are everything. The scallop accent on this console table and the perfect balance of symmetry and asymmetry accentuate the beautiful wallpaper.

Andrew Howard bathroom

This pretty marble sink lends big style to a small space.

And a white marble bathroom becomes a showpiece in Howard’s skilled hands.

This small but well-appointed balcony is the perfect spot to take advantage of a fabulous view. Just add a favorite cocktail for a perfect way to cap off a productive Atlanta day!

Thanks so much for stopping by today. We always love seeing you here!

In Good Taste: MA Allen Interiors

MA Allen Interiors office

Good morning, chic readers! You know how much we love sharing favorite designers with you every week. The only thing better than sharing a favorite designer is sharing a favorite designer who lives right here in North Carolina!

MA Allen Interiors kitchen

MA Allen and her partners say that they “take a single thought, or a tiny swatch of fabric, or a family heirloom…and allow that small seed to become an explosion of ideas that eventually transforms your entire space.”

MA Allen Interiors kitchen

We love the thought of that, of starting with the tiniest kernel of an idea and using that to create something extraordinary.

As you can see, that’s exactly what these designers do.

MA Allen Interiors kitchen

From an eat-in kitchen worth coming home to,

MA Allen Interiors kitchen

To a sweet pop of color that brings a crisp, white kitchen to life,

MA Allen Interiors dining

A fun, modern dining room that practically begs for family holidays to be held (and makes great use of a space!),

To a master bedroom where every detail is just right, MA Allen hits the high notes of style in every project.

There is absolutely nothing we love more than an adorable nursery. A nursery like this one that can grow as he does is all the better. A simple switch from crib to bed and this darling nursery becomes a sweet room for a busy little boy.

MA Allen Interiors playroom

In any child’s space, but especially a playroom, stylish storage is such a necessity. Books become a beautiful focal point, and her favorites are always right on hand between tea parties.

MA Allen Interiors mudroom

Mudrooms are perhaps one of the most essential spaces in homes today–and MA Allen makes sure that even these tiny nooks not only flow seamlessly into the rest of the house but are also pinnacles of style. From North Carolina’s triangle to the Atlantic coast, New York to DC, these designers adapt every space to their clients’ needs. And we couldn’t love the results any more!

Woman’s World thinks you and your mom will love reading my Peachtree Bluff Series together–and we wholeheartedly agree! Pick up copies of Slightly South of Simple and The Secret to Southern Charm for both of you. You’ll definitely be the favorite child this year!

8 Tips for Creating a Relaxing Bedroom Design

Serena & Lily

Good morning, chic readers! We hope you are having a fabulous day! With Halloween behind us, we feel like now is the time that the sprint to the holidays begins. We don’t know about you, but we absolutely cannot wait! But we know the flurry of activity can be exhausting, which is why it’s more important than ever to make sure that your bedroom is a relaxing haven. Check out a few of our favorite tips for creating a relaxing bedroom retreat!

  1. Invest in cozy covers. With cooler temperatures rolling in, we love nothing more than adding a warm, fluffy comforter to the bed and curling up.
Andrew J Howard

2. Create a cozy reading spot. Darker, cooler days mean less time more spent outside–and more time snuggled indoors with a favorite book or movie. Having a beautiful space to indulge in some much needed relaxation time is such a bonus in a bedroom.

3. Let in lots of light

4. And find a pretty way to block out extra light when the time comes.

5. Bring the outside in with flowers, fresh foliage or even a whimsical nod to Mother Nature like this adorable owl.

6. Warm yourself by the fire. Nothing creates a fabulous, relaxing bedroom quite like a roaring fire on a cold evening or morning. It makes getting out of bed so much easier. And the good news is that there are so many chic, easy-to-install options, your home doesn’t have to be born with a fireplace to have one now.

Serena & Lily

7. Find the perfect bed. Obviously, the right bed, is one of the very most important parts of any pretty bedroom. It’s the reason we’re there to begin with! Form is, of course, as important as function.

Serena & Lily

8. Keep the accessories sparse. We love a good accessory as much as the next girls, but, sometimes a cluttered nightstand can lead to a cluttered mind. For a restful night, we’d say, less is more.

Serena & Lily

Now we’re off to transform our sleeping spaces. Wishing you a holiday season full of fun–and a good night’s sleep!

Thanks so much for stopping by Design Chic today. We always love seeing you here!

Four Poster Beds Add Style to Any Bedroom

Heather Chadduck Interiors | Emily Followill Photography

Good morning, chic readers! We hope you had a terrific weekend and are ready to start a wonderful week ahead. We don’t know about you, but we love Valentine’s Day. Or not even really the day so much as the whole Valentine’s season.

Kate Marker Interiors|Stoffer Photography

All the red and pink and gold glitter hearts and chocolate and wine everywhere. Everything for Valentine’s Day is so cute and chic and stylish now. This bedding is the perfect Valentine’s Day red…

Serena & Lily

And this one is the perfect Valentine’s Day pink! We still remember being kids and and coming home with a huge bag full of paper Valentine’s sporting sappy sayings, some with candy, some with other Valentine’s trinkets. You never knew what you were going to find. It was wonderful!  What’s even better is the fabulous four poster beds. We don’t think many things add a sense of presence in a room quite like a substantial bed. French provincial four poster beds add old world elegance to a bedroom’s decor.

Lisa Furey Interiors

Black with a touch of gold is an ever-elegant combination that adds so much style to a bedroom.

Are you a fan of four poster beds? Wishing you a wonderful Valentine’s Day, no matter what you’re doing!

In Good Taste: Brady Design

Brady Design living room

The more we see, the more convinced we are that paring down, keeping it simple and coming back to those clean lines is the way to go. With the busyness of everyone’s lives today, the mental clutter and chatter that tends to take over, coming home to something sparse and streamlined is almost a necessity. When it comes to getting back to those basic values, Brady Design is tops. They manage to create rooms that feel at once open, airy and perfectly chic. Every detail is perfectly choreographed so that each space feels like a place we couldn’t wait to come home to. From kitchens that wow to living rooms that stun to master bedrooms that would put us to sleep in the best possible way, one look and you’ll see why we think Brady Design is in good taste.
