When Thanksgiving rolls around, we always think of Atlanta. Growing up, we used to head to Atlanta every Thanksgiving, spend the blessed turkey day itself with my aunt (Mom’s sister), uncle and cousins and then brave the crowds at Lenox and Phipps on Black Friday to get all our Christmas shopping done in one, fell swoop.
We’re not sure we have that kind of shopping stamina these days–although there was that fateful Thanksgiving night/Black Friday morning at midnight that Dad and I braved the line out the door at midnight at Walmart to get that one Christmas gift that little Will was wanting most, since it was coming in on the Black Friday truck and would surely be gone by the morning.
It was probably my most selfless parenting moment. And it hasn’t happened since.
This year, Florence has us out of our house and in a rental for Thanksgiving and the foreseeable future beyond.
While we are going to miss the holiday at home so much, it will be fun to be at my childhood home, surrounded by our large extended family, to celebrate one of my very favorite holidays.
There is, as always, so much to be thankful for!
This stunning Atlanta townhouse, designed by Melanie Turner, is another perfect spot for hosting one of the best celebrations of the year.
With soothing and beautiful bedrooms perfect for gifts,
A stunning bathroom for relaxing when it’s all over,
There is nothing that makes you appreciate your home quite like leaving it. We moved out of our house for post-Hurricane Florence repairs a few weeks ago, and I’m already dreaming of moving back in. It’s about fifty percent gutted at the moment, but that’s progress…
One of my favorite parts of our 1903 house has always been the huge window seat in the bay window of our master bedroom.
It is one of the sunniest spots in the house and has the best view–and was one of the first things to be torn out after the storm. Despite our intricate boarding up process, the wind and water won.
Now that the window seat is gone, we realize how huge that space really is. And, as much as I love my window seat, I’m starting to question whether it’s wise to build it back.
This isn’t the first hurricane we’ve been through and it certainly won’t be the last–which makes the idea of a cozy master sitting area to replace the window seats very appealing.
We love the idea of having a sweet little space for morning coffee and late-night chats.
And there’s something luxurious about comfy, cushy upholstered items right in your master bedroom.
As would a love seat or, my personal favorite, a chic chaise. (Is there a limit to how many chaises you can have in a house before it starts to become overkill?)
But, then again, I could always rebuild those window seats…
What do you think? Are you a fan of sitting rooms in the bedroom?
Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day! We always love seeing you here!

The city pied-a-terre is a right up there with the beach house or the mountain estate when it comes to dream houses.
And when it comes to pied-a-terres, this one, designed by one of our very favorite (and funniest!) designers, Andrew Howard, is the cream of the crop.
A Florida resident who has been tapped to bring out the best in some of the most exclusive homes in the Bahamas and beyond, this Atlanta project is just one of many stages on which Howard displays his range as a decorator.
He embraces the sleek and simple that the city demands,
While still inserting his signature playful style to make it family friendly and fun.
Layered patterns and the right blend of color give Howard’s homes a dash of whimsy that is always welcome–and sets his designs apart from the pack.
Unexpected details like bold ceilings and a perfectly imperfect gallery wall make a statement while still allowing the expansive views of the city to take center stage.
When it comes to good design, the details aren’t something, they are everything. The scallop accent on this console table and the perfect balance of symmetry and asymmetry accentuate the beautiful wallpaper.
This pretty marble sink lends big style to a small space.
Good morning, chic readers! You know how much we love sharing favorite designers with you every week. The only thing better than sharing a favorite designer is sharing a favorite designer who lives right here in North Carolina!
MA Allen and her partners say that they “take a single thought, or a tiny swatch of fabric, or a family heirloom…and allow that small seed to become an explosion of ideas that eventually transforms your entire space.”
We love the thought of that, of starting with the tiniest kernel of an idea and using that to create something extraordinary.
As you can see, that’s exactly what these designers do.
To a sweet pop of color that brings a crisp, white kitchen to life,
A fun, modern dining room that practically begs for family holidays to be held (and makes great use of a space!),
To a master bedroom where every detail is just right, MA Allen hits the high notes of style in every project.
There is absolutely nothing we love more than an adorable nursery. A nursery like this one that can grow as he does is all the better. A simple switch from crib to bed and this darling nursery becomes a sweet room for a busy little boy.
In any child’s space, but especially a playroom, stylish storage is such a necessity. Books become a beautiful focal point, and her favorites are always right on hand between tea parties.
Mudrooms are perhaps one of the most essential spaces in homes today–and MA Allen makes sure that even these tiny nooks not only flow seamlessly into the rest of the house but are also pinnacles of style. From North Carolina’s triangle to the Atlantic coast, New York to DC, these designers adapt every space to their clients’ needs. And we couldn’t love the results any more!
Woman’s World thinks you and your mom will love reading my Peachtree Bluff Series together–and we wholeheartedly agree! Pick up copies of Slightly South of Simple and The Secret to Southern Charm for both of you. You’ll definitely be the favorite child this year!
Now that spring is officially here, we are looking forward to warmer weather, plenty of travel–and, of course, lots of guests!
Living at the beach, it seems that when the weather changes, suddenly everyone wants to come visit. And we can’t think of anything better! Check out a few of our favorite tips for creating a lovely room that your guests will never want to leave!
Invest in cozy bedding. Nothing says “welcome” to your guests like cozy, comfy bedding.
2. If there’s room, add a chair–or two! It’s so nice for guests to have a spot for relaxing right in the privacy or comfort of their own room.
3. Think about their comfort. When it comes to sleep, few things are as important as the mattress! We always suggest sleeping in your own guest room every now and then to see how it would be to be a guest in your home. If the mattress isn’t up to par, it might be time to upgrade. Check this fabulous selection–including the Bedding Mart family bed!
4. Keep it clutter free. A few well-placed accessories are more than enough when it comes to guest rooms. We don’t want to overwhelm our guests with personal mementos and too many accessories.
5. That said, it’s always nice to provide guests with all the essentials they’ll need! A stack of fresh towels, shower essentials and a water pitcher are all nice touches.
6. Include a few favorite reading materials–books, magazines, today’s newspaper–in case guests have a bit of downtime. Bonus points for this fabulous reading nook!
7. If there’s room, there’s nothing we love more than a desk in a guest room. We’re all so connected these days that it’s hard to totally unplug and a desk gives guests a place to sneak in a few minutes of work without any interruptions.
8. Footboards are great, but not every bed has one. When faced with a bed with no footboard, we love the look of a bench at the end of the bed. A chaise or a pair of chairs is also a great complement and gives guests a spot to sit and read, watch TV or simply put on their shoes!
We don’t know about you, but these gorgeous guest rooms have us ready to do a little entertaining of our own! What’s your favorite way to make your guests feel at home?
