From “the next major voice in Southern fiction” (Elin Hilderbrand) and the bestselling author of the Peachtree Bluff series comes an odd-couple tale of friendship that asks just how much our past choices define our happiness.

It’s summertime on the North Carolina coast and the livin’ is easy.

Unless, that is, you’ve just lost your mother to cancer, your sister to her extremist husband, and your husband to his executive assistant. Meet Gray Howard. Right when Gray could use a serious infusion of good karma in her life, she inadvertently gets a stranger, Diana Harrington, fired from her job at the local pharmacy.

Diana Harrington’s summer isn’t off to the greatest start either: Hours before losing her job, she broke up with her boyfriend and moved out of their shared house with only a worn-out Impala for a bed. Lucky for her, Gray has an empty guest house and a very guilty conscience.

With Gray’s kindness, Diana’s tide begins to turn. But when her first love returns, every secret from her past seems to resurface all at once. And, as Gray begins to blaze a new trail, she discovers, with Diana’s help, that what she envisioned as her perfect life may not be what she wants at all.

In her warmest, wisest novel yet, Kristy Woodson Harvey delivers a discerning portrait of modern womanhood through two vastly different lenses. Feels Like Falling is a beach bag essential for Harvey fans—and for a new generation of readers.

I am so excited for my first ever Publisher’s Weekly Review! Check it out. And, don’t forget, it’s never too early to preorder!

Feels Like Falling Kristy Woodson Harvey. Gallery, $16 trade paper (400p) ISBN 978-1-9821-1770-2 (The Southern Side of Paradise) serves up a tale of disaster-turned serendipity in the fictional Cape Carolina, N.C. Successful businesswoman Gray Howard begrudgingly promotes her husband to CFO of her marketing company, ClickMarket, only for him to leave her for the assistant she hired for him. Reeling from a painful, cash-draining divorce, she inadvertently causes Diana, a photo developer at a pharmacy, to lose her job by complaining about her work. After learning this, Gray hires Diana to work as a housekeeper. Over time, the women vent about their lives and forge a friendship that heals them both. The story alternates between Gray’s voice and Diana’s, delving into Diana’s past heartaches and lost hope for having a child. In pitch-perfect tones, Harvey creates two Southern women doing their best to deal with everything life throws at them, and her able plotting will keep readers turning the pages. Secondary characters—Gray’s witty assistant, Trey; her new, younger boyfriend, Andrew; and Diana’s fiercely loyal friend group—add charm. Harvey’s optimistic tale just might convince readers that bouncing back can actually land a person in a better place than where they started. Agent: Elisabeth Weed, the Book Group. (Apr.)

10 Ways to Add Casual Style to Your Living Space

Will's playroom with Serena & Lily Hanging bench

Happy Monday, friends! Today, we are celebrating big time. Slowly but surely, our place in Beaufort is coming back together after Hurricane Florence’s house party more than a year ago. The house isn’t livable yet, but the third floor is ready for its close up, and we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you. We teamed up with our friends at Serena & Lily to create a cute playroom that also works well for the whole family–and we thought it would be fun to share some of our favorite tips for adding casual style to your space.

  1. Add a touch of whimsy! For us, this adorable hanging swing not only added a touch of whimsy but made a difficult-to-decorate slanted attic space fun and functional.

2. Lighten the wood. Dark wood is great for serious spaces, but lightening it up makes things a bit more casual.

3. Mix up materials. Rattan chairs lend a touch of casual chic style that makes any room instantly feel like a vacation.

4. Fun pillows. We love serious pillows as much as the next people, but a cute tassel and wide stripe make a space feel comfy and casual.

5. Textured lamps and shades. Pretty porcelain has its place, but these textured lamps have a handmade feel that is super cool. And natural fiber shades are a great alternative to traditional silk.

6. Casual rugs. Bright colors, bold patterns and easy fabrics combine to create rugs that are perfect for taking the formality down a notch.

7. Baskets. Baskets are one of our favorite decor elements for adding instant storage and laid-back style.

8. Beanbag chairs. Nothing says “fun” like a beanbag chair. These loungers are an upgraded take on an old favorite.

9. A pretty pouf. A sweet pouf not only doubles as a footrest or extra seating but also signifies that a room doesn’t take itself too seriously.

10. Fun art. Three-dimensional art in particular brightens a room. In our playroom, surfboards got a new life as sea animals from late local artist Craig Gurganus of Fish Bouffant. These Serena & Lily mounts add a sweet touch to this room.

Do you prefer casual spaces or more formal ones?

Good morning, chic friends. Our hearts are heavy this morning, as we know yours are, thinking of our friends in the Bahamas and the rest of Dorian’s path.

As we head inland today, there is no time that we are so poignantly reminded of the importance of home, of its impact on our lives, our families and our well being. It goes without saying that our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected.

When it comes to expressing ourselves and creating a space that feels uniquely like us–and our families–there truly is no place like home

Lauren Elaine Interiors living room design

That’s something that designer Lauren Lowe and her husband Brandon, owners of this Classic Redux, know all about.

Kitchen in blue and white Lauren Elaine Interiors

When they moved into their freshly built home after putting their touches on, they knew right away that something didn’t feel quite right.

This 1930s Collier Hills home, however, was full of the charm and character that their new home was missing.

Add an antique art and furniture collection that the couple negotiated with the sale of the house,

Special, modern touches,

And a heaping helping of talent from Lowe and you have the recipe for a perfect home for a family of three.

But this designer’s favorite part of the renovation?

Creating a sweetly chic space for her baby son–

And a place where she and her husband–and the family’s dog!–could share their little boy’s first special moments. We don’t know about you, but we think this charming home is perfect from top to bottom! What’s your favorite space?

On the Sweet Side

All my friends are having babies. Well, I mean, not all of them obviously. I have plenty of friends well into the ages where the term “medical miracle” might apply if they were near to giving birth.

But something was definitely in the water ten or eleven months ago. All I can say is, lucky them. Because the new Serena & Lily nursery line is about the cutest thing in the entire world.

I’m a little bit jealous. Not of all the middle-of-the-night feedings, necessarily. But definitely of the decorating opportunities. The best thing about having friends with babies (besides that you can snuggle them and smell that sweet baby smell and then give them back and have a glass of wine…) is that you can help them design nurseries that will grow as the baby does! If you or someone you know are decorating a nursery—or if you just love looking at them!—check out a few of our favorite tips for creating a nursery that will last long past the baby stage.

Serena & Lily nursery

  1. For girls’ nurseries, don’t overdo it on the pink. Don’t get us wrong. We love pink. We’re obsessed with pink. We could live in an all-pink world. But most little girls go through that phase (I know I did!) where pink becomes passé. To design a nursery that grows with her, don’t overdo it on the pink—you can potentially talk her out of an entire room remodel until the pink-hatred phase passes.

2. Incorporate versatile furniture. An occasional chair is perfect for any age and that shelving unit that holds baskets of onesies and wipes now can hold Barbie shoes and Matchbox cars later.

A Worldly Approach

  1. Go older with the art. Art is definitely an investment. And when it’s all baby booties and Beatrix Potter characters (guilty) they’re over it in five years or less. Art that grows as they do is a must.

  1. Think about those long nights. Let’s face it: Sleepless nights are sort of a fact of parenthood. It starts with middle-of-the-night feedings and morphs into fevers and Halloween-candy induced tummy bugs. (I speak from experience on the latter.) Investing in great staples—like a comfy chair, lamp and throw—for you, is the gift that keeps on giving.

Serena & Lily nursery

  1. Incorporate neutrals. Baby blues and baby pinks must be the sweetest colors in the world. But if you’re looking to create a nursery that grows with them, they can be a little limiting. Grays and tans with splashes of the color help the nursery stand the test of time.

Serena & Lily nursery

Coastal Traditions

6. Play with patterns. Bold patterns give a more grown-up vibe to a space that they will love just as much at nine as you do right now.

Serena & Lily nursery

Blue Notes

  1. Have room for friends. He’s sleeping twenty hours a day now, but before you know it, you’ll have three boosters lining your backseat and he’ll be critiquing your Spotify playlist before you take his friends to the pool. (Six-year-olds have very specific musical tastes.) This darling daybed transitions beautifully from nursery to big boy room–and is ideal for overnight guests.

Growth Potential

  1. Make it convertible. Those cribs are an in-vest-ment. No doubt about it. Purchasing a convertible one certainly softens the blow and makes it so their cribs can last for years—and keep them safe during the transition from crib to bed.

Serena & Lily nursery

Born Traveler

  1. Incorporate texture. Just as in any other space, a mix of textures and colors adds so much to a nursery. Baskets are not only attractive, they’re also versatile—and there is nothing more fun than a swing chair!

Serena & Lily nursery

We hope you found a few of these tips helpful if you’re lucky enough to have a nursery to design, or help design! This triplet nursery may be our favorite of all! And the whale motif is one these boys will love for years to come. All these looks—and many more—are available from one of our most favorites, Serena & Lily. Gorgeous looks, great quality and always something just a little bit different make Serena & Lily our go-to home decor spot and a nursery must. What’s your favorite Serena & Lily style?

Leaving fans “practically [begging] for a sequel” (Bookpage), critically acclaimed author Kristy Woodson Harvey returns with the second novel in her beloved Peachtree Bluff series, featuring a trio of sisters and their mother who discover a truth that will change not only the way they see themselves, but also how they fit together as a family.

After finding out her military husband is missing in action, middle sister Sloane’s world crumbles as her worst nightmare comes true. She can barely climb out of bed, much less summon the strength to be the parent her children deserve.

Her mother, Ansley, provides a much-needed respite as she puts her personal life on hold to help Sloane and her grandchildren wade through their new grief-stricken lives. But between caring for her own aging mother, her daughters, and her grandchildren, Ansley’s private worry is that secrets from her past will come to light.

But when Sloane’s sisters, Caroline and Emerson, remind Sloane that no matter what, she promised her husband she would carry on for their young sons, Sloane finds the support and courage she needs to chase her biggest dreams—and face her deepest fears. Taking a cue from her middle daughter, Ansley takes her own leap of faith and realizes that, after all this time, she might finally be able to have it all.

Harvey’s signature warmth and wit make this a charming and poignant story of first loves, missed opportunities, and second chances and proves that she is “the next major voice in Southern fiction” (Elin Hilderbrand, New York Times bestselling author).
