Things We Love: Smart & Stylish Mudrooms

Smart & Stylish Mudrooms from Curtis & Windham
Curtis & Windham

Mudrooms are one of our absolute favorite parts of a home. We love the idea of having a place that we can drop all of our things and keep the house looking neat and tidy.

So much so that we are going to add one to our house. We have a big space right by the back door, perfect for creating the ultimate storage area. So we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what exactly we want to achieve out of this space.

The absolute non-negotiable is big, deep drawers for dropping beach bags, purses and all sorts of various and sundry things that tend to collect by the back door.

And, because there is so much vertical space, we definitely plan on taking advantage with little cubbies up top for baskets. You can never have enough baskets!

A space for fishing rods is a must when you have fishermen in your family.

We love having grasscloth for the backdrop. It adds so much character!

We love pretty doors but are afraid that putting too many of them in the area will make it feel closed–it’s kind of narrow. So we’ll probably just include one to hide the electrical panel and store brooms, mops, etc.

What a beautiful, calming area right by the back door.

Spring Cleaning and Organizing your Home

Spring cleaning and organizing
Sage Design

Good morning, chic readers! ‘Tis the season for… spring cleaning, of course! It may not technically be spring yet, but, we don’t know about you, but we like to be ready when spring is ready to make its arrival, as if tossing old shoes and organizing our sock drawers can usher it in a little faster. Plus, once spring arrives, who wants to be cooped up inside cleaning? Not us!

Studio Dearborn

If you’re like us, the kitchen is not only the heart of the home. It’s also the place where everything seems to get dumped throughout the day! Sometimes it feels like the electronics are taking over! Docking Drawer charging and powering outlets in the kitchen are probably the most brilliant invention since the smart phone. Now we can charge all those devices without having an ounce of counter clutter.

We all know there’s never enough drawer space. There just isn’t. Fortunately, there are so many pretty ways to display all the attractive and practical things that live in the kitchen.

If the kitchen is the winner of where everything gets dumped, the office is a very close runner up.

Fortunately, there’s a Docking Drawer for the office too. It’s great for smaller electronics but also perfect for putting your laptop in the drawer for the night. For us, it’s out of sight out of mind… and if it isn’t out of sight then we’re on it!

So, Docking Drawers for electronics are awesome. But Docking Drawers for the bathroom? A whole new level. The tangle of cords and jumble of the hairdryer, flat iron and curling iron is the bane of my existence.  This solution is totally practical. (And gets bonus points for being pretty!)

Whether you have tons of space in the bathroom,

Spring cleaning and organizing
Sam Allen Interiors

Or a smaller nook to work with, there’s plenty of space for a Docking Drawer!

Now that the cords and counter clutter problems are solved, there’s plenty of room for dreaming. Coffee in the bathroom, anyone? This morning kitchen is too beautiful for words–and how great to have that first cup without even walking to the kitchen?

If you’re lucky to have space for a big laundry room, you’re lucky enough. Making the best possible use of the space by hiding everything behind beautiful cabinetry is a bonus!

And, of course, we’re spring cleaning our closets. They are our spring cleaning Everest… Packing for the five week The Secret to Southern Charm tour was a good start because it got me in the paring mood. (If you aren’t going to wear it in five weeks when are you really going to wear it?) What’s first on your spring cleaning list?

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day!

In Good Taste: Park and Oak Design

Park and Oak Design entrance

Even their name conjures good feelings. Park and Oak Design. It sounds like a firm that brings the outdoors in. That creates simple yet beautiful design schemes that feel totally livable.

Park and Oak Design living room

It’s kind of like judging a book by its cover. You’re really not supposed to but, sometimes, the cover does give you a really accurate glimpse into what the book is about.

Park and Oak Design staircase

In this case, we judged a firm by its name. And like that book cover, it did give us a pretty accurate glimpse into what was to come.

Park and Oak Design living room

If we had to pick one word to describe Park and Oak Design, we think we’d choose… airy. (It’s hard to choose one word, especially when you’re used to getting 85,000 to describe things.)

Park and Oak Design living room

There’s a minimalistic air about this firm’s work that we find incredibly appealing and totally refreshing.

Park and Oak Design kitchen

A modern streak runs through all of these designs that pairs well with traditional touches.

And you know how we love our subway tile!

Park and Oak Design kitchen

We love how simple this kitchen is. You can never go wrong with black, white and a touch of natural fiber.

Park and Oak Design kitchen

It took us a while to warm up to the idea, but we are now big fans of mixing metals. This kitchen is case and point!

These pendants are perfection.

Park and Oak Design dining

Speaking of pendants, this is one of our favorites. It’s even more stunning in real life!

Saarinen tables are always a favorite. Sleek, modern and totally functional, they’re a great pick for a breakfast room, especially one that isn’t huge.

Park and Oak Design bathroom

The right combination of high and low, rustic and modern, this gorgeous bathroom is the perfect mix of favorite elements blended together in just the right way.

Park and Oak Design bathroom

A great wallpaper can totally make a bathroom. We love the vintage feel of this marble sink. The simplicity of these fixtures is a perfect complement to the fun wallpaper. All in all, we think you’ll agree that the work of Park and Oak is in good taste. Which is your favorite room?

We hope you’re having a great day and staying warm!
