In Good Taste: Bria Hammel Interior Design

Good morning, friends! We hope you had a fantastic Martin Luther King Day. We always pack those little bonus days off from school with lots of activities and fun. I think I look forward to them as much as my son does. So we were both really bummed out that he had a sore throat. (Well, to be fair, it was much worse for him than it was for me since he was the one that had to be sick!)

He met his reading goal of 1,000 pages this month–I know, 1,000. First grade is not what it used to be!–so I was going to take him to Lowe’s and Dank Burrito, which was what he had requested if he met said goal.

Yes, Lowe’s is my first grader’s favorite store. He likes to build anything and everything. Unfortunately, I had to do the responsible mom thing and say no to burritos and boards. (And torx screws. He taught me what those were.)

But, today is a new day, and we’re saying yes, yes, yes to this lighting! Demure in the dining room? Never!

From the flowers in the sink to the perfect pendant light, this kitchen is positively dreamy.

And it’s no surprise, really.

Because dreamy, as you can see, is what Bria Hammel Interior Design does

In these designs, as in life, it really is the little things. The instant chicness (and practicality!) of a library ladder in the kitchen,

A statement backsplash that says, More over, subway tile,

And a fume hood that the kitchen wears around like a jaw-dropping piece of jewelry.

Hammel does a twist on tradition so, so well,

And makes even the most industrial of spaces an experience.

Speaking of experiences… Have you ever? A reading nook fit for a princess! We think we’d like to curl up in one of these! But not on a sick day. Maybe on a burrito day. After a trip to Lowe’s. Whatever your favorites are, we hope you get to do them all today!

Thanks so much for stopping by Design Chic. We love seeing you!

Things We Love: Stylish Sitting Areas

bedroom sitting area
Beth Webb Interiors| Emily Followill Photographer

There is nothing that makes you appreciate your home quite like leaving it. We moved out of our house for post-Hurricane Florence repairs a few weeks ago, and I’m already dreaming of moving back in. It’s about fifty percent gutted at the moment, but that’s progress…One of my favorite parts of our 1903 house has always been the huge window seat in the bay window of our master bedroom.  It is one of the sunniest spots in the house and has the best view–and was one of the first things to be torn out after the storm. Despite our intricate boarding up process, the wind and water won.  Now that the window seat is gone, we realize how huge that space really is. And, as much as I love my window seat, I’m starting to question whether it’s wise to build it back. This isn’t the first hurricane we’ve been through and it certainly won’t be the last–which makes the idea of a cozy master sitting area to replace the window seats very appealing.

House Tour: Hám Interior Design

If you loved the good taste of Hám Interior Design in yesterday’s post as much as we did, then this house tour is sure to be a treat.

A mix of shiplap, fine architectural details, black and white flooring with updated finishes, this is a home that is at once livable and stylish.

A chic reading nook in a beautiful office is a perfect unique touch that makes this home feel cozy as can be,

And an updated kitchen with touches of old world charm combine effortlessly,

The right blend of form, function and whimsy.

An easy, calming color palette lends an instant serene vibe from the entrance hall to the dining room and beyond.

And what we perhaps love the most about this home is the splashes of the unexpected–like the bold art in this bathroom–that sets this place apart from all the rest.

Pops of color keep it just light enough,

While a pretty mix of details add character in every space.

A place for everything is the icing on the cake!

We hope you’ve loved this British getaway from Hám Interior Design just as much as we have!

Things We Love: A Banquette That Elevates the Room

banquettes

We do it. We know you do too. You get to a restaurant and there are a couple chairs on one side and a big, cushy, cozy booth on the other.

If you’re with older friends or relatives, bosses etc. you probably selflessly take the chair side, feeling like a martyr the entire time as you do.

If you’re with your kids or husband or maybe even your best friend, there’s probably a bit of fighting over the good side that ensues. At least, there is in our world.

All of these gorgeous banquettes make us think that this is really the best idea.

And who cares if you sit four wide in the privacy of your own home? We’re not judging.  An awkward corner becomes a fabulous reading area with the addition of built-in seating,

And a simple breakfast becomes an event.

We love the space-saving abilities of banquettes, and how it can be built straight across, in an L-shape, a U… You get the idea.

It even has the power to transform a charming breakfast area into a multipurpose space, perfect for reading, crafts or anything else your family needs!

8 Tips for Creating a Relaxing Bedroom Design

bedroom
Suzanne Kasler

Good morning, chic readers! We hope you are having a fabulous day! With Halloween behind us, we feel like now is the time that the sprint to the holidays begins. We don’t know about you, but we absolutely cannot wait! But we know the flurry of activity can be exhausting, which is why it’s more important than ever to make sure that your bedroom is a relaxing haven. Check out a few of our favorite tips for creating a relaxing bedroom retreat!

bedroom
Alyssa Rosenheck &  Katie Gibson Interiors

  1. Invest in cozy covers. With cooler temperatures rolling in, we love nothing more than adding a warm, fluffy comforter to the bed and curling up.

2. Create a cozy reading spot. Darker, cooler days mean less time more spent outside–and more time snuggled indoors with a favorite book or movie. Having a beautiful space to indulge in some much needed relaxation time is such a bonus in a bedroom.

bedroom
Shelley Johnstone Design

3. Let in lots of light

4. And find a pretty way to block out extra light when the time comes.

5. Bring the outside in with flowers, fresh foliage or even a whimsical nod to Mother Nature like this adorable owl.

6. Warm yourself by the fire. Nothing creates a fabulous, relaxing bedroom quite like a roaring fire on a cold evening or morning. It makes getting out of bed so much easier. And the good news is that there are so many chic, easy-to-install options, your home doesn’t have to be born with a fireplace to have one now.

bedroom
Phoebe Howard Design

7. Find the perfect bed. Obviously, the right bed, is one of the very most important parts of any pretty bedroom. It’s the reason we’re there to begin with! Form is, of course, as important as function.

bedroom
Urban Grace

8. Keep the accessories sparse. We love a good accessory as much as the next girls, but, sometimes a cluttered nightstand can lead to a cluttered mind. For a restful night, we’d say, less is more.

Now we’re off to transform our sleeping spaces. Wishing you a holiday season full of fun–and a good night’s sleep!

Thanks so much for stopping by Design Chic today. We always love seeing you here!

This beautiful, sprawling kitchen is the absolutely ideal spot for feeding a crowd.

There’s no such thing as too many cooks in the kitchen in a space like this.

The only thing better than plenty of space for cooking is plenty of space for eating. This charming nook is the right mix of glamour and beachy style.

In Good Taste: Nest & Company

From older houses to brand new, Nest + Company orchestrates perfect interiors, the kind of spaces that transform houses into homes.

One of our favorite things about these designers is that their rooms feel like the kinds of places where every member of the family can feel comfortable. The mix of masculine and feminine in this room feels cozy without being prissy.

Organic shades and natural elements are always the right choice. We love that the bursts of color in this neutral breakfast room come from fruits!

Each of Nest Interiors spaces feels uncluttered and clean, exactly the way we want our homes to feel. The juxtaposition of this modern light fixture with a farm table is so charming.

Of all the spaces in our houses we love to be bright, the kitchen might be our favorite. Maybe it’s because it’s where we start our days, but we love the light streaming in. These original hardwood floors add character galore and give this home a sense of history, despite its modern facelift.

Talk about a view! Wow! This kitchen takes advantage of every inch of spectacular water vista. This kitchen is chic enough to stand alone but simple enough to let the views be the main event.

But these designers are far from one note. Vivid pops of color and whimsical pattern infuse this kitchen with family friendly style.

Simplicity steals the show in this comfy reading nook–and makes a strong case for utilizing the perfect house plant. We love everything about this!

A comfy porch that lets the breeze in is exactly what we need this fall! It’s the perfect season for opening the windows and savoring the breeze. This space is instantly calming.

Layered rugs are a cozy way to really define a space. Speaking of great floors, we’re loving the painted hardwoods we can see in the adjoining bedroom!

This little boy’s bedroom is nothing short of adorable but still in the tone of the rest of Nest + Company’s flawless designs.

A mudroom is, to us, one of home’s great luxuries! It’s a simple spot that keeps the rest of the house looking incredibly chic and clutter free to show off all that hard design work!

Thank you so much for stopping by today, chic readers. We hope you loved Nest + Company’s good taste as much as we did!

Cozy Reading Nooks!

Cloth & Kind

Happy Thursday, Design Chic readers! Have you had a good week? I know I have! I’m just on Cloud Nine about Slightly South of Simple‘s release and this wonderful book tour I’m on–and all of your kind words!

reading nook
Kapito Muller

This is probably pretty obvious, but reading is one of my great loves. It always has been, actually, from the first day I started.

Collins Interiors

I still remember how it felt to read my very first book all by myself. (It was called Dr. Cat, and I want a copy for my son, but I can’t find one anywhere!)Ever since that day, I’ve been pretty much hooked. So I think it’s totally necessary to have a great reading nook.

reading nook
Geoff Chick Architect

We have a lot of them in our house, actually. A chaise with a lamp in the guest room for guests, a pair of them in the room off the kitchen, lots of throws over cozy chairs that just beg to be read in, a double window seat on the third floor with the best view in the house…

When I first set out on my journey to become an author, I used to have dreams of having a bookshelf full of nothing but rows of my books.

I’ve realized now, as my third book is releasing, that I have so many other books it might be unrealistic to dedicate an entire bookshelves to just me…

Serena & Lily

But it’s still pretty cool to look over and see my name on some of those spines.

reading corner
Collins Interiors

And it’s crazy to think that only two years ago my debut novel, Dear Carolina, was just releasing. And that only a year ago Lies and Other Acts of Love was coming out. I almost can’t remember my life before I was an author, and it hasn’t even been that long!

Meg Braff Interior Design

And, if you aren’t tired of hearing it yet, YOU are one of the major reasons that I get to continue on in this career, that I get to keep writing books. Thank you for reading, for reviewing, for recommending to your friends, to my fellow bloggers for sharing on your blogs and for being generally awesome. I am eternally grateful!
