The Southern Side of Paradise: Jack’s House

Hamptons Cottages & Gardens

Good morning, readers! The Southern Side of Paradise officially released on Tuesday! It’s so exciting. We have had a fun-filled few days meeting lots of readers and signing tons of books–and the fun is just beginning! (More tour info at the bottom of the post.)

The Secret to Southern Charm is set in the charming Peachtree Bluff, Georgia, a tiny town with a cast of quirky characters with Ansley Murphy, a widowed interior designer and mother of three daughters, at the helm.

One of my favorite characters in the book is Ansley’s long lost first love come back, Jack.

In an effort to win back Ansley’s heart, Jack buys the house next door, the one he knows Ansley has dreamed of decorating for most of her life.

And he enlists Ansley to turn his charming historic home in Peachtree Bluff’s downtown into a bachelor pad with plenty of style. (Enough style that maybe it won’t be a bachelor pad for long…)

We imagine Jack’s redesigned home to look a little like this fabulous one from Hamptons Cottages & Gardens.

Vintage maps and antique wood add that masculine feel that every good bachelor pad needs.

Traditional colors and a mix of old and new furniture help maintain the integrity of the historic house with updated charm.

If Jack’s plan of winning his way into the Murphy girls’ hearts works, there will be plenty of activity in his kitchen.

With a light and bright breakfast room, he can serve lots of guests.

Simplicity is one of the main tenants of this character’s life. We think this open shelving would suit him perfectly.

Neutral doesn’t have to be boring, as is evidenced by this room.

Touches of wood, even in unexpected places, add a hint of that British Colonial feel that Jack was looking for.

Varying shades of blue define the color palette throughout the home but provide enough variety to be interesting.

This navy nook provides a perfect crash pad for guests–or reading nook for catching up on the latest books.

This fun take on subway tile is a fabulous touch!

Jack’s white picket fence is the perfect finishing touch to a beyond charming exterior. Looks like this charming house is no different!

If you haven’t met them yet, I absolutely cannot wait to introduce all of you to the characters in The Southern Side of Paradise!

and…Our Favorite Idea for Mother’s Day…

In Good Taste: Bria Hammel Interior Design

Good morning, friends! We hope you had a fantastic Martin Luther King Day. We always pack those little bonus days off from school with lots of activities and fun. I think I look forward to them as much as my son does. So we were both really bummed out that he had a sore throat. (Well, to be fair, it was much worse for him than it was for me since he was the one that had to be sick!)

He met his reading goal of 1,000 pages this month–I know, 1,000. First grade is not what it used to be!–so I was going to take him to Lowe’s and Dank Burrito, which was what he had requested if he met said goal.

Yes, Lowe’s is my first grader’s favorite store. He likes to build anything and everything. Unfortunately, I had to do the responsible mom thing and say no to burritos and boards. (And torx screws. He taught me what those were.)

But, today is a new day, and we’re saying yes, yes, yes to this lighting! Demure in the dining room? Never!

From the flowers in the sink to the perfect pendant light, this kitchen is positively dreamy.

And it’s no surprise, really.

Because dreamy, as you can see, is what Bria Hammel Interior Design does

In these designs, as in life, it really is the little things. The instant chicness (and practicality!) of a library ladder in the kitchen,

A statement backsplash that says, More over, subway tile,

And a fume hood that the kitchen wears around like a jaw-dropping piece of jewelry.

Hammel does a twist on tradition so, so well,

And makes even the most industrial of spaces an experience.

Speaking of experiences… Have you ever? A reading nook fit for a princess! We think we’d like to curl up in one of these! But not on a sick day. Maybe on a burrito day. After a trip to Lowe’s. Whatever your favorites are, we hope you get to do them all today!

Thanks so much for stopping by Design Chic. We love seeing you!

Things We Love: Stylish Sitting Areas

Beth Webb Interiors

There is nothing that makes you appreciate your home quite like leaving it. We moved out of our house for post-Hurricane Florence repairs a few weeks ago, and I’m already dreaming of moving back in. It’s about fifty percent gutted at the moment, but that’s progress…

One of my favorite parts of our 1903 house has always been the huge window seat in the bay window of our master bedroom

sitting area bedroom
Hamptons Cottages & Gardens

It is one of the sunniest spots in the house and has the best view–and was one of the first things to be torn out after the storm. Despite our intricate boarding up process, the wind and water won.

Now that the window seat is gone, we realize how huge that space really is. And, as much as I love my window seat, I’m starting to question whether it’s wise to build it back.

This isn’t the first hurricane we’ve been through and it certainly won’t be the last–which makes the idea of a cozy master sitting area to replace the window seats very appealing.

We love the idea of having a sweet little space for morning coffee and late-night chats.

And there’s something luxurious about comfy, cushy upholstered items right in your master bedroom.

A pair of chairs with a table between them would fit nicely.

As would a love seat or, my personal favorite, a chic chaise. (Is there a limit to how many chaises you can have in a house before it starts to become overkill?)

But, then again, I could always rebuild those window seats…

House Tour: Hám Interior Design

If you loved the good taste of Hám Interior Design in yesterday’s post as much as we did, then this house tour is sure to be a treat.

A mix of shiplap, fine architectural details, black and white flooring with updated finishes, this is a home that is at once livable and stylish.

A chic reading nook in a beautiful office is a perfect unique touch that makes this home feel cozy as can be,

And an updated kitchen with touches of old world charm combine effortlessly,

The right blend of form, function and whimsy.

An easy, calming color palette lends an instant serene vibe from the entrance hall to the dining room and beyond.

And what we perhaps love the most about this home is the splashes of the unexpected–like the bold art in this bathroom–that sets this place apart from all the rest.

Pops of color keep it just light enough,

While a pretty mix of details add character in every space.

A place for everything is the icing on the cake!

We hope you’ve loved this British getaway from Hám Interior Design just as much as we have!

Things We Love: A Banquette That Elevates the Room

banquette
Jeffrey Dungan Architects

We do it. We know you do too. You get to a restaurant and there are a couple chairs on one side and a big, cushy, cozy booth on the other.

banquette
Beth Webb Interiors via Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

If you’re with older friends or relatives, bosses etc. you probably selflessly take the chair side, feeling like a martyr the entire time as you do.

If you’re with your kids or husband or maybe even your best friend, there’s probably a bit of fighting over the good side that ensues. At least, there is in our world.

banquette

So why relegate the squishy, comfy, cozy booth side to restaurants when you can have one in the privacy of your own home?

banquette
NYC&G

All of these gorgeous banquettes make us think that this is really the best idea.

And who cares if you sit four wide in the privacy of your own home? We’re not judging.

An awkward corner becomes a fabulous reading area with the addition of built-in seating,

 banquette

And a simple breakfast becomes an event.

 banquette

We love the space-saving abilities of the banquette, and how it can be built straight across, in an L-shape, a U… You get the idea.

Gomez Associates via Architectural Digest

It even has the power to transform a charming breakfast area into a multipurpose space, perfect for reading, crafts or anything else your family needs!

Are you a fan of the banquette? Do you have one in your home?

Thanks so much for stopping by Design Chic today! We always love it when you do!

8 Tips for Creating a Relaxing Bedroom Design

bedroom
Suzanne Kasler

Good morning, chic readers! We hope you are having a fabulous day! With Halloween behind us, we feel like now is the time that the sprint to the holidays begins. We don’t know about you, but we absolutely cannot wait! But we know the flurry of activity can be exhausting, which is why it’s more important than ever to make sure that your bedroom is a relaxing haven. Check out a few of our favorite tips for creating a relaxing bedroom retreat!

bedroom
Alyssa Rosenheck &  Katie Gibson Interiors

  1. Invest in cozy covers. With cooler temperatures rolling in, we love nothing more than adding a warm, fluffy comforter to the bed and curling up.

Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles

2. Create a cozy reading spot. Darker, cooler days mean less time more spent outside–and more time snuggled indoors with a favorite book or movie. Having a beautiful space to indulge in some much needed relaxation time is such a bonus in a bedroom.

Shelley Johnstone Design

3. Let in lots of light

Shayelyn Woodbery via Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

4. And find a pretty way to block out extra light when the time comes.

bedroom
Southeastern Designer Showhouse

5. Bring the outside in with flowers, fresh foliage or even a whimsical nod to Mother Nature like this adorable owl.

6. Warm yourself by the fire. Nothing creates a fabulous, relaxing bedroom quite like a roaring fire on a cold evening or morning. It makes getting out of bed so much easier. And the good news is that there are so many chic, easy-to-install options, your home doesn’t have to be born with a fireplace to have one now.

bedroom
Phoebe Howard Design

7. Find the perfect bed. Obviously, the right bed, is one of the very most important parts of any pretty bedroom. It’s the reason we’re there to begin with! Form is, of course, as important as function.

bedroom
Urban Grace

8. Keep the accessories sparse. We love a good accessory as much as the next girls, but, sometimes a cluttered nightstand can lead to a cluttered mind. For a restful night, we’d say, less is more.

Now we’re off to transform our sleeping spaces. Wishing you a holiday season full of fun–and a good night’s sleep!
