House Tour: Washington, DC’s Oldest Home Restored

oldest house in Washington curb appeal

The oldest home in Washington, DC was actually originally built in Danvers, Massachusetts in 1754.

But George and Miriam Morris, former owners of the house, had it disassembled and moved to DC. And we can see why.

The home, which has changed hands many times over the past two and a half centuries or so–and was even once a girls’ boarding house–was in desperate need of a facelift.

When the Berman family enlisted Barnes Vanze Architects to restore the gem to its former glory, it had fallen into disrepair.

It took almost a year to abate the mold lurking behind wallpaper and underneath the floorboards.

And great pains were taken to restore the home to its former glory while keeping as much of its original charm in tact as possible.

Family antiques combine with newer pieces to create a design scheme that feels collected, comfortable and updated.

Large windows make the space feel open and airy,

And nowhere is the unique updating this house underwent more obvious than in this gorgeous master bath, complete with an antique Swedish vanity and a Restoration Hardware bathtub.

This home’s 8,000 square feet provide plenty of room for family and guests, and each space is perfectly appointed.

We think it’s safe to say that Washington, DC’s oldest house has been beautifully restored, updated for a new century and has a long, bright future ahead.

Feels Like falling by Kristy Woodson Harvey

Donations for Hurricane Dorian

Just a quick note: From September 13 until September 20, I am going to be donating 100% of my proceeds from preorders of Feels Like Falling to the Red Cross to help hurricane victims both in the Bahamas and locally here in NC. Simply order from your bookstore of choice and email me at [email protected] to let me know so I can donate for you!

If you have $15 lying around and you want to do something with it, by all means, please donate it to the hurricane. But if you were going to order Feels Like Falling anyway, let’s join forces to help out together!

More About Feels Like Falling…

From “the next major voice in Southern fiction” (Elin Hilderbrand) and the bestselling author of the Peachtree Bluff series comes an odd couple tale of friendship that asks just how much our past choices define our happiness.

It’s summertime on the North Carolina coast and the livin’ is easy.

Unless, that is, you’ve just lost your mother to cancer, your sister to her evangelical husband, and your husband to his executive assistant. Meet Gray Howard. Right when Gray could use a serious infusion of good karma in her life, she inadvertently gets a stranger fired from her job at the local pharmacy.

Diana Harrington’s summer isn’t off to the greatest start either: Hours before losing her job, she broke up with her boyfriend and moved out of their shared house with only a busted Impala for a bed. Lucky for her, Gray has an empty guest house and a very guilty conscience.

With Gray’s kindness, Diana’s tide begins to turn, but when the one that got away comes back, every secret from her past seems to resurface all at once. And, as Gray begins to blaze a new trail, she discovers, with Diana’s help, that what she envisioned as her perfect life may not be what she wants at all.

In her warmest, wittiest, and wisest novel yet, Kristy Woodson Harvey delivers a discerning portrait of modern womanhood through two vastly different lenses. Feels Like Falling is a beach bag essential for Harvey fans—and for a new generation of readers.

Eighteen days until Thanksgiving. Twenty-eight days until Hanukkah. Fifty-one days until Christmas.

Basically, what we’re saying is that the holiday clock is ticking–and there’s no time to rest on this gorgeous chaise, sourced from Best Prices for Furniture! Unless you’re writing a letter to Santa. Then it’s okay. First things first, of course.

We don’t know about you, but we have lots of things to do! My house is still about 70% gutted post-Florence, which stinks for the holidays, but is awesome for dreaming about how I’m going to put it all back. This game table? Definitely on my wish list!

Check out a few of our favorite ways to prep your house for this quickly approaching (yay!) holiday season with our friends from Best Prices for Furniture, who make it easy to source all your wishlist items, deliver with white glove service–and all at the best available price.

  1. Dining table looking a little shabby? Outdated? Small? Families grow, but, lucky for us, so do tables! Memories are made around that table, so it’s a necessity, for sure. Modern? Traditional? Farmhouse? Industrial? Best Prices for Furniture can source whatever your heart desires.

bathroom update

2. Focus on the bathroom details. So, yeah, most of our guest bathrooms don’t look quite like this one. But thoughtful details, like stacks of clean, fresh, white towels, a beautiful mirror, stylish storage and even a chic garden seat can help elevate your bathroom style for holiday houseguests.

Suzanne Kasler for Hickory Chair

3. If your guest room needs a little spruceSuzanne Kasler’s Paris Collection for Hickory Chair is a must-see. When you’re finished with your guest room remodel, make sure you spend a few nights there to see what your guests see. Did you forget a full-length mirror? A robe hook? A comfy chair for resting?

Celerie Kemble for Arteriors

4. Up your lighting game. You want to be able to see all those gifts you’re unwrapping, of course. And a hostess or host like you? You’ll be getting lots of presents. Our favorite new lighting is Celerie Kemble’s collaboration with Arteriors. Talk about revamping in style!

5. Create room for conversation. From post-dinner drinks to family gatherings to mornings around the Christmas tree, your living room gets a lot of use–and it deserves to be the best it can be. If those occasional chairs from your grandmother are too tired, the coffee table isn’t your style or the sofa has always been the wrong shape, there’s no time like the present to replace it!

6. Glam it up. As your family evolves, so does your life–and so should your home. If you’re past the Cheetos-fingers and Play Doh phase, it might be time to rethink your decor.

Henredon Furniture Barbara Barry

7. Carve out a spot of calm for you. Not only is this gorgeous new desk in blush from Barbara Barry for Henredon the perfect place to pen those holiday letters, it also doubles as the perfect vanity for getting glammed up for all the fabulous soirees you’ll be attending. And, if all else fails, you can grab a glass of wine, close the door, pretend you’re doing something important, and take a moment to hear yourself think amid the chaos!

If all this sounds great but a little overwhelming–I mean, who has the time?–Best Prices for Furniture has your back. Simply peruse their looks or send your favorites and their bevy of their discount dealers will compete for your business, saving you time and money.

House Tour: Historical Concepts

House Tour: Historical Concepts

Trust us, there’s nothing we love better than an old house. (We have the houses to prove it.) But, well, historical homes come with their fair share of, let’s say, issues.

So we love the idea of the new old house. You know the kind. It looks like an old house, but is built brand new, i.e., you probably won’t have to have a handyman on payroll.

That look can be very, very tricky to achieve, as adding that character isn’t something just anyone can pull off.

But we think Historical Concepts does the old new house better than pretty much anyone in the business, building new houses that ooze old world charm.

It is the little things that turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, like these beautiful blue doors.

And unexpected elements–like this unique ceiling–set this kitchen apart from the pack.

Beautiful windows with lots of light and a marble farmhouse sink make a stunning statement.

Talk about a dream pantry! Wow! And we couldn’t love this library ladder any more.

This wood paneling adds so much charm to an other basic stairwell.

And a barrel ceiling makes this hallway an experience.

Bold navy blue trim adds an instant nautical feel–and these beds are so chic!

Every space feels like an occasion with Historical Concepts.

But–no surprises here–we think we might love the outdoor spaces most of all!

What is your favorite way to make a new house feel old?

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day. We always love it when you stop by!
