A Charming Cottage in Connecticut

cottage entrance

Few trips are as quintessentially summer as the family beach trip.

And, while life (unfortunately) doesn’t always allow for a summer away from the real world, fortunately, we can be there today wherever we are!

cottage living room

This Niantic, CT house is absolutely everything a summer house should be.

cottage dining room

Relaxed, casual, completely unfussy yet totally refined.

cottage kitchen

It’s the kind of place that looks like generations of family members have spent their summers and generations more will continue to.

cottage staircase

Nautical touches like this blue and white striped runner and rope railing make it feel classically coastal,

While painted shiplap adds an old world feel.

Cute accents like a rope ball and ship’s lanterns add coastal touches without being kitschy.

cottage bathroom

And a clawfoot tub is the perfect spot for washing the sand down the drain at the end of the day.

Bamboo blinds are all these rooms need–and collect far less dust during the off seasons than curtains.

And a bath updated in all the right places and preserved and others maintains the upscale coastal charm feel. Wherever you are today, we hope you enjoyed this trip to beautiful Niantic as much as we did.

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day. We always love seeing you here!

Hoping you end your hectic day in a place as lovely as this. Thanks so much for stopping by today. We always love it when you do!

What Calypso in the Country is saying about my latest novel, The Secret to Southern Charm:

Be ready to laugh, cry and lose some sleep because you won’t be able to put this one down!  The Secret to Southern Charm is a beautifully written story full of love, heartbreak, suspense and of course, that sweet southern charm!  Interior design enthusiasts will also love picturing the lovely decor of the homes which provide the calming background for the complicated lives of the characters.

And I got to meet my sweet friend Shelley at Root Home Decor in Manasquan, NJ on my The Secret to Southern Charm tour. She is as fabulous as her blog and I could have talked to her all night. It was so fun! You can check out her post about it! Thank you so much, Shelley!

House Tour: Jack’s Peachtree Bluff Beach House

Good morning, chic readers! With the first week of The Secret to Southern Charm tour behind us, we are just taking a moment to thank you so much for all your support–and celebrate!

If you’ve read any of the Peachtree Bluff series then you know that Ansley, one of my protagonists, is an interior designer.

And she has dreamed of decorating the house next door to her grandmother’s–hers now–since she was a teenager.

Conveniently, her first love, the man who has swept back into Peachtree Bluff and complicated her life inexplicably, has bought the house next door and, as the story unfolds, Ansley gets to design this house, that she has dreamed of for so long. Here’s a little peek at what she says:

I was sitting at the dining room table, sipping my first cup of coffee of the morning and sketching a room—something I hadn’t done in quite some time.

Over the past several years, I had created mood boards for my clients so they could see exactly what furniture, fixtures, and fabric I was contemplating for their rooms.

But I knew already that Jack would let me have free rein, and sketching the rooms I was designing was how I best dreamed them.

I liked to think I was drawing them into life.

This gorgeous home from Connecticut Cottages and Gardens is very similar to how we picture the complete redesign of Jack’s house that Ansley undertakes, classic but refined, elegant and understated and just right for a grown bachelor, even though, later, Ansley admits…

I gazed up at the stunning canopy bed with the ethereal white curtains I had copied from Phoebe Howard. The walls were a light gray, on the lavender side so they felt warm, not steely. It probably wasn’t a color I would have chosen for Jack the bachelor. It was a color I had chosen for me, a color I had chosen for our life together. As I lay there, feeling totally at peace, I finally admitted that, all this time, I had been decorating this house for me.

Wishing you a wonderful day!

When it comes to standing out, it’s the little things in a home that can make the biggest impact.

And creating memorable details is what Beau Clowney Architects do so incredibly well.

Painted beams and a water blue backsplash add beachy beauty to this lovely space.

And natural elements from the sea combine with traditional blues for a unique feel that is casual and a little dressy all at once.

A pretty banquette is even more beautiful in blue and white, while statement lighting unifies the space.

For added privacy for kids and adults alike, it’s hard to beat these adorable drapes on the built-in bunks. Rope handles finish off the look in style!

A beautiful fireplace with a stunning piece of art is always a favorite focal point for us. And the symmetry in this room is absolutely stunning.

We love a house that’s designed to take advantage of every square inch of view–and shiplap ceilings lend a coastal feel.

Porches and patios are hard to beat when it comes to taking advantage of living in gorgeous places. These shutters are a chic and convenient way to close it up when it’s time to go home.

Whether on the front, back or side, these architects really know how to make an entrance .

This classic style is so well done. We love the black and white with touches of copper.

Speaking of welcoming, who wouldn’t want to be a guest at this gorgeous home? We know we would!

Thanks so much for stopping by Design Chic today. We always love seeing you. For more of these stunning designs follow Beau Clowney on Instagram!
