In Good Taste: Creative Tonic

Remember when “Southern decor” meant an overload of needlepoint, fake florals that weren’t fooling anyone and displaying so much of Grandmother’s silver that you couldn’t even see the buffet below it?

Well, (thankfully!) those days are no more, and the duo behind Creative Tonic, Courtnay Tartt Elias and Lila Chumbley Malone, is doing its part to create Southern homes that incorporate all the elegance and tradition we love in Southern design while making it up to date and fresh, fresh, fresh!

This kitchen is just one very elegant example.

We love the texture these barstools add to this marble kitchen (and are partial to them because we have these Serena & Lily beauties too!).

And the statement lighting is just one of many elements that blends these open spaces while still making them feel distinct from one another.

But Creative Tonic isn’t a one-note team. These two are pros at creating spaces that fit their owners’ wants and needs.

Elias in particular is known for her use of color, and this dining room is just one example of her keen eye and understanding of something that can be a bit tricky.

Symmetry in a bedroom can make it feel so serene–

And we probably don’t have to tell you that we’re a little partial to the UNC pennant that’s a perfect part of this decor!

If the clothes make the man, we’re pretty sure that the closet makes the clothes… This one is utter perfection!

Talk about powdering your nose in style… This bath might be small on space, but it is big on taste!

A pretty pale lavender is the perfect complement to this marble bath–and brass accents add to the warm feeling.

All we know is that the fabulous team behind this Houston firm is taking Southern style to a whole new level–and we couldn’t love their good taste any more!

What Black White + Kuhl is Saying about The Secret to Southern Charm:

While the book release date is not until April 4th, I was lucky enough to get an advance copy from Kristy to read and share with my book club. We plan to meet for dinner in a few weeks and share our reviews and discussion highlights in an upcoming post. This is the second book in the Peachtree Bluff series (Slightly South of Simple was the first) telling the story of Ansley her three daughters. I can’t wait to find out what happens to these women as their story of love, loss, relationships and second chances continues! —Michelle Black White

Statement-Making Homes

Kate Marker Interiors
Kate Marker Interiors|Builder: Grand Traditions Home | Photo: Stoffer Interior Photography

One of our favorite parts of any house is those focal points, the moments that stop us in our tracks, that make us remember the way a home looked and felt long after we have left it.

To a piece of art that absolutely defines a space,

That sets the tone so effortlessly, so seamlessly, that it seems like it was made for the space, there are so many ways to make a statement in a home. We are people who need light, all year, every season. That’s why, to us, there’s nothing better than a huge, fabulous window that lets in tons of light. If they also add a touch of black, they get extra credit.

Or a smaller, detailed window that adds not only light but also tons of charm.

Statement lighting is one of our favorite ways to define a room.

Each of these fixtures adds a modern touch to the room.

What’s your favorite way to make a statement?

House Tour: Andrew Skurman Architects

Andrew Skurman Architects house

Good morning, chic friends! Our friends at Andrew Skurman Architects have a treat for us today! A beautiful city residence that is perfection from the outside in.

Andrew Skurman Architects exterior

There is nothing like a first impression, and this one is totally on point and sets the tone for whats to come. The black front door juxtaposes perfectly with the beautiful tan of the exterior. And the trimmed boxwoods are the ideal accessory.

Andrew Skurman Architects abstract-art

Modern art makes a stunning statement in a simple entrance hall.

Andrew Skurman Architects glass

We don’t love anything quite as much as a light-filled hallway. This glass ceiling accomplishes that in high style!

A black and white vignette is always on trend!

There’s statement lighting…

And then there’s statement lighting! We think it’s safe to say that this fabulous home is full of it!

Andrew Skurman Architects kitchen

We love the clean, cool look of stainless in a kitchen, and this cabinetry takes the look over the top!

A beautiful bar is perfect for entertaining guests. We simply adore the copper sink!

Andrew Skurman Architects bathroom

We can’t decide which element of this gorgeous bath is our favorite! But the architectural details in here definitely top the list. Those windows are incredible!

A perfect, elegant spiral.

Andrew Skurman Architects dining

Dining al fresco has never been so chic!

Comfy furniture with a fire table keeps outdoor entertaining alive all year round. Do you love outdoor entertaining in the fall? Or would you rather curl up by an indoor fire?
