Things We Love: Making a Grand Entrance

grand entrance
Robert A.M. Stern

From an evening gown to a perfect floral arrangement, an entrance is sort of like a first impression: You only get one chance to make it.

A round table is one of our favorite ways to make a statement in the foyer.

brick grand entrance

Paired with the perfect flowers — and, of course, the right statement lighting — it’s a piece that is as versatile as it is lovely.

In a pinch, we love the idea of pulling chairs up to an entrance hall table for extra seating at a dinner party.

You know we always love decorating with books. The entrance hall table is no exception!

Beyond that crucial table, so many other elements can absolutely make an entrance. The right rug…Woodwork for miles…

And, of course, a show-stopping chandelier.

And if you have a spectacular view? Don’t forget to flaunt it!

Something a little bit unexpected can certainly make an entrance pop — whether it’s cozy furniture or a bold paint choice.

And a fun pattern on the floor adds instant interest, as does a fabulous arch!

Cool art is instantly eye-catching and we love a seagrass rug for creating a less dressy feel.

Symmetry isn’t required for making an entrance, but a special pair can take a foyer up a notch.

And, sometimes, the loudest statements are the simplest of all.

Tables and lighting, accessories and flooring are all great ways to make an entrance. But nothing says, “welcome” quite like filling your home with things (and people) you love! And if you have puppies, so much the better!

Thanks for stopping by today. We hope it’s a wonderful one!

In Good Taste: Whittney Parkinson Design

Whittney Parkinson entrance

Over the past several years, we’ve shared the work of so many fabulous architects, designers and photographers, and if we’ve learned anything, it’s this: Good taste doesn’t just mean one thing.

Whittney Parkinson kitchen

Whittney Parkinson is a designer that proves that, creating rooms and home as unique as the families inside them.

Whittney Parkinson kitchen

One glance and we think you’ll agree that this designer’s work is in good taste!

These cabinets add a fun, out-of-the-box look to this stunning kitchen,

And pops of gold complete the modern, glamorous look.

This is statement lighting at its best–and the juxtaposition of the bar stools makes the entire thing feel down to earth.

This designer can make a huge statement but also proves that simple is very, very chic,

And clean and streamlined with touches of fun is always in style.

We’d love to walk into this mudroom, with plenty of personality and tons of storage. It’s the perfect combination!

In Good Taste: Creative Tonic

Remember when “Southern decor” meant an overload of needlepoint, fake florals that weren’t fooling anyone and displaying so much of Grandmother’s silver that you couldn’t even see the buffet below it?

Well, (thankfully!) those days are no more, and the duo behind Creative Tonic, Courtnay Tartt Elias and Lila Chumbley Malone, is doing its part to create Southern homes that incorporate all the elegance and tradition we love in Southern design while making it up to date and fresh, fresh, fresh!

This kitchen is just one very elegant example.

We love the texture these barstools add to this marble kitchen (and are partial to them because we have these Serena & Lily beauties too!).

And the statement lighting is just one of many elements that blends these open spaces while still making them feel distinct from one another.

But Creative Tonic isn’t a one-note team. These two are pros at creating spaces that fit their owners’ wants and needs.

Elias in particular is known for her use of color, and this dining room is just one example of her keen eye and understanding of something that can be a bit tricky.

Symmetry in a bedroom can make it feel so serene–

And we probably don’t have to tell you that we’re a little partial to the UNC pennant that’s a perfect part of this decor!

If the clothes make the man, we’re pretty sure that the closet makes the clothes… This one is utter perfection!

Talk about powdering your nose in style… This bath might be small on space, but it is big on taste!

A pretty pale lavender is the perfect complement to this marble bath–and brass accents add to the warm feeling.

All we know is that the fabulous team behind this Houston firm is taking Southern style to a whole new level–and we couldn’t love their good taste any more!

What Black White + Kuhl is Saying about The Secret to Southern Charm:

While the book release date is not until April 4th, I was lucky enough to get an advance copy from Kristy to read and share with my book club. We plan to meet for dinner in a few weeks and share our reviews and discussion highlights in an upcoming post. This is the second book in the Peachtree Bluff series (Slightly South of Simple was the first) telling the story of Ansley her three daughters. I can’t wait to find out what happens to these women as their story of love, loss, relationships and second chances continues! —Michelle Black White

House Tour: Jack’s Peachtree Bluff Beach House

Good morning, chic readers! With the first week of The Secret to Southern Charm tour behind us, we are just taking a moment to thank you so much for all your support–and celebrate!

If you’ve read any of the Peachtree Bluff series then you know that Ansley, one of my protagonists, is an interior designer.

And she has dreamed of decorating the house next door to her grandmother’s–hers now–since she was a teenager.

Conveniently, her first love, the man who has swept back into Peachtree Bluff and complicated her life inexplicably, has bought the house next door and, as the story unfolds, Ansley gets to design this house, that she has dreamed of for so long. Here’s a little peek at what she says:

I was sitting at the dining room table, sipping my first cup of coffee of the morning and sketching a room—something I hadn’t done in quite some time.

Over the past several years, I had created mood boards for my clients so they could see exactly what furniture, fixtures, and fabric I was contemplating for their rooms.

But I knew already that Jack would let me have free rein, and sketching the rooms I was designing was how I best dreamed them.

I liked to think I was drawing them into life.

This gorgeous home from Connecticut Cottages and Gardens is very similar to how we picture the complete redesign of Jack’s house that Ansley undertakes, classic but refined, elegant and understated and just right for a grown bachelor, even though, later, Ansley admits…

I gazed up at the stunning canopy bed with the ethereal white curtains I had copied from Phoebe Howard. The walls were a light gray, on the lavender side so they felt warm, not steely. It probably wasn’t a color I would have chosen for Jack the bachelor. It was a color I had chosen for me, a color I had chosen for our life together. As I lay there, feeling totally at peace, I finally admitted that, all this time, I had been decorating this house for me.

Wishing you a wonderful day!
