After years of showcasing hundreds of beautiful homes on Design Chic – traditional, modern, farmhouse, and coastal- we’ve discovered a few ideas that take a house from merely styled to those that feel truly inviting and classic.
Today, we are sharing 5 interior design lessons from real homes, real designers, and real plans that you can use in your own home, whether you’re renovating a living room, your bedroom, or an entire home. These aren’t trends; they are tried and true practices that stand the test of time for timeless interior design.
1.Edit, Edit, Edit
The designer will tell you to decorate your room, then take away one piece to create negative space. A wonderful collection, thoughtfully curated, is much more interesting than a clutter of trendy items. One statement piece gives a beautiful place for the eye to land when entering any room.
2. Scale is Everything
Have you ever walked into a room that feels just right, yet you can’t put your finger on exactly why? Every decision in the homes we have shared is carefully planned and scaled to perfection. From light fixtures to rugs, to art, and furniture, the size of each item can make or break the look. A light fixture too large (though we tend to love a statement-making fixture), or furniture too small, interferes with the balance. Proper scale makes even a simple design feel chic and intentional.
3. Lighting in Layers
The use of task, ambient, and accent lighting rather than a single source is necessary in beautiful design. A library light accents favorite art, chandeliers, and pendants create a general glow while table lamps and sconces provide task illumination.
4. Subtle Trends Keep a Home Current
A stylish wallpaper in a powder room, a colorful pillow on your sofa, and patterned textures in furniture and accessories are easy and inexpensive ways to incorporate a trend that keeps your home looking current, not trendy. These are looks that are relevant without looking dated in 5 years.

5. Memorable Homes
Family heirlooms, personal collections, and curated bookshelves make a house a home – your home. Add items from your travels, family photos, and children’s art to create a home that feels lived in.
With timeless interior design, you edit with intention, strategically layer, and remember scale. This creates a home that is warm, inviting, and effortless for years to come.

My 13th novel SUMMER STATE of MIND releases May 5, 2026 and I can’t wait to share it with you. Preorder here!
More About SUMMER STATE OF MIND:
“Queen of the beach read,” (Cosmopolitan) New York Times bestselling author Kristy Woodson Harvey returns with a heartfelt escape to coastal Carolina.
After the worst day in her professional life, burnt-out NICU nurse Daisy Stevens runs to Cape Carolina, North Carolina, looking for a new life—and possibly new romance. On her first day at her “simpler” job, high school baseball coach Mason Thaysden discovers an abandoned baby, sending ripples through the entire tight-knit town of Cape Carolina.
Mason is still struggling to reconcile the scars of the injury that kept him out of the big leagues, stuck in his hometown, and searching for a way out. This newcomer and the child they’ve saved together might be just the motivation he needs to stay put. Sparks fly as Mason acquaints Daisy with Cape Carolina, introducing her to his friends and family, including his batty Aunt Tilley, who is looking for relief from long-buried family secrets and her own fresh start.
But as Daisy becomes increasingly attached to this abandoned child, and begins facing her own demons in the process, a startling discovery is made that threatens to rip the entire town of Cape Carolina apart, placing Daisy, Mason, and Tilley in the center of the storm. In a novel that proves that “Kristy Woodson Harvey is (the) go-to for elevated beach reads” (People), they will each learn that with love, understanding—and a community theater production of Hello, Dolly!—sometimes life conspires to bring us just exactly where we belong.
