Ali Cayne’s Townhouse

We’ve always thought that getting to live within the hustle, bustle and everything-at-your-fingertips of the City meant giving up something else — plenty of room for your kids, outdoor space, a place for your own garden.

But Ali Cayne’s downtown townhouse, envisioned, designed and implemented totally by her, proves that, when it comes to living in Manhattan, you can have it all.

Going Gray

La Maison Gray
It’s not just about aging gracefully…

                                                                           crazy for cars

We think going gray is the best thing since basic black.
Classy in the City
It’s no wonder that gray is a close cousin of the interminably chic silver.

Echoes in the Wind
From what we wear to where we wear it, gray is the shade to beat.

Everything’s better when you go gray.
We aren’t promising not to color our hair when the day comes, but in regard to aging, accessorizing and everything in between, we couldn’t agree more…
Wishing you a weekend full of favorable wind!

House Tour: Shelter Island Beach House

When we think of the beach, we think of simple. Clean, fresh decor that’s neither fussy nor overdone, where minds can de-clutter.
We don’t know about you, but our minds are at their uncluttered best when our homes are streamlined as well. As such, we think we might want to move to this Shelter Island house!
We’re feeling more relaxed just looking at it!
There’s something about slipcovers that make our worries drift out the open, salty-breeze filled doors. Maybe it’s the slouchy look, maybe it’s the ability to remove stains… Whatever.
Every element of this kitchen is classic and serene. It’s the kind of place that will look beautiful for years to come.
What’s better than a chalkboard with a grocery list? A chalkboard with NO grocery list!
Who needs Ambien when your room is so fabulously serene. This bookcase proves that there’s no need to fill every nook with stuff. Plus, who has time to dust when the water is right outside?
We love how the soothing color palette was maintained in this adorable bedroom, yet fun abounds!
These are the perfect handles for adding a touch of interest without feeling overpowering. We love the whales — this is the ultimate gender-neutral bedding.
We feel like this stairway is a summation of the house. Beachy, vacation perfection.
Even the dog feels like he has just finished meditating.
Wishing you a Wednesday as peaceful as this view!

British Colonial Style

British Colonial style just feels like a vacation, doesn’t it?

So it’s a good thing that you can even pack in British Colonial Style.

And, of course, no British Colonial look is complete without a few tropical plants scattered about.

This double sink is the peak of Colonial chic.

Can’t you see some very important government official from the past signing documents at this desk?

Decor to Adore
So we know these bed surrounds are intended to prevent intruders of the malaria-ridden kind. But they seem romantic all the same!

Eye for Design
The rich, dark tones of this style almost feel like they’re keeping a secret…

We feel like this dining table and chairs should be set up in the midst of a several day hunt, where sleeping tents surround it in a makeshift village.
Hardie Boys, Inc
It all seems like something Joseph Conrad would write about… And this seems like somewhere we’d like to vacation!

What a treat to get to lounge on this porch!
And, speaking of treats, make sure you stop by Kendall Boggs’ blog. She’s having a SALE!! And she’s extending it for us! We have a bunch of her pieces and LOVE them all. (We had a local art show last weekend and people kept trying to buy her stuff off the walls!) Also, congrats to Kendall on moving to a new showroom — Ferrari Fine Art. So much to celebrate!

Marble Countertops

Christopher Peacock
Happy Tuesday, everyone! If you follow our blog you know we LOVE white marble! So that’s why we were super excited when our friend Deana emailed with some questions about her kitchen remodel — and the white marble she wants to use! So here’s our 2 cents for Deana and all the white marble lovers out there!
Sage Design
Carerra marble tends to be grayer than calcutta marble — but calcutta is substantially more expensive! For the best deal and the best look, pick your actual carerra slab and choose the whitest one you can find.

Christopher Peacock
Once you’ve picked your slab, there’s the next all-important question: polished or honed. It’s a personal preference really, BUT…
Dobson and Daughter
While both varieties are beautiful, polished marble tends to show etching more easily — and there will be etching — while the etches blend more easily into honed marble and aren’t as visible.
Lonnie Paul Design
Both polished and honed can be sealed to minimize staining. In our personal experience, though, some staining is inevitable.

When it comes to backsplashes, there are so many good options. Small tiles like these are a great option for breaking up the marble.
Nancy Boszhardt Design via House Beautiful
Subway and larger tiles are also great for adding a bit of a casual feel to pair with the elegant stone.
Julie Hayes Design via Veranda
But, then again, the all marble look is smashing too!
Gil Schafer via House Beautiful
Marble in a beach house is amazing, but can take away from the relaxed, casual look. These boarded walls add a beachy feel.
David Kleinberg via Veranda
We don’t know about you, but we tend to like a little gray veining in our white marble. Acres of stainless complement it perfectly.
John M. Hall via House Beautiful
Marble is great for so, so many things. But chopping isn’t one of them. This chopping block, marble combo solves the only marble problem we can find!
Susan Dossetter
Farm sinks and marble are an unbeatable combination.
Timothy Whealon via Veranda

At the end of the day, whatever choices you make with your white marble, it’s bound to look amazing. Thanks for the questions, Deana! We hope your kitchen turns out to be everything you’re dreaming of!
