“[I]f I recommend one book to you this year (so far), let it be Slightly South of Simple for your first beach read. The darling and charming Kristy Woodson Harvey’s latest novel is the definition of a summer novel. I loved it almost as I love her.”–Jessica, Simply Bedazzled
Good morning, chic readers! We hope your week is off to a terrific start! One of our favorite things about traveling now is discovering new designers that we absolutely love. When we were in Cashiers, NC a couple of weeks ago our friend and event planner extraordinaire Elizabeth Fletcher of I Do Events Atlanta introduced us to the work of Kathleen Rivers, whose stunning Cashiers home is pictured above.
Needless to say, it was love at first sight.
Mountain style is a genre all its own, a look that, when done right, can conjure not just an opinion about a room but a feeling about a place.
Walking into one of Rivers’ rooms is like being transported to a completely different place, and she creates the perfect rustic elegance to make her spaces feel chic and upscale yet homey.
From luxe and layered,
To minimalistic and cozy,
Every detail of Rivers’ rooms tells a story.
Combined with an enviable view, it’s a stunning combination!
One of our favorite stops in Cashiers was Rivers’ incredible Chattooga Club.
Of all the places we visited on our fun-filled adventure, we think it might have been our very favorite.
This sitting room was so inviting and so cozy we wanted to stay all day! And the fireplace is perfect for taking the edge off of that mountain chill.
A handful of magnificently appointed guest rooms are available for the usage of club members and their guests, and we are hoping to get to stay in them very, very soon. The pictures don’t do them justice!
And organic garden and hen house contributes to the rustic charm.
The spa is a one-of-a-kind experience.
Rivers’ own home is a beautiful blend of what we love about her style.
Laid back yet elegant, comfortable yet refined, we could move right in to any of Rivers’ perfectly appointed spaces.
Are you a fan of mountain style? Thanks for making Design Chic a part of your day!
“Let me start by saying I’m not a HUGE book person in that I don’t finish one book and immediately go on to another. I may only get to one or two books a year. But, when I find a good book I have a hard time putting it down. Slightly South of Simple was like that for me. I couldn’t wait to get to the next chapter! This is your perfect read this summer… If you have a list of books your going to read this summer, or if you’re like me and only read once in a while, do yourself a favor and grab this book. I have no doubt you will fall for these women like I did.” —Shelley from Crazy Wonderful
Creating a mountain retreat is much like creating a coastal retreat in that, when it comes to adding rustic charm, less is more. The wooden base of this table is the perfect mountainous touch in the breakfast room.
Window in front of the vanity? No problem! Just cover it with a mirror. We adore this idea!
Beams are the perfect mountainous touch in this stunning master bath–and the hardware steals the show in these builtins.
Textures and fabrics combine in this room to make it feel luxe, layered and cozy.
Rich hues and bold stripes combine for making the perfect bunk room. This one makes the most of a sloped ceiling.
A mix of light and dark colors makes this room feel warm and cozy but still light enough to be clean and refreshing.
The best part of Cashiers? Why the view, of course! It’s the thing that, no doubt, keeps people coming back again and again. Do you love this Cashiers home as much as we do? Wishing you a wonderful day!
Happy Wednesday, friends! We’re on our family vacation this week and fully in a summer state of mind. Whether you’re working or playing we hope that this gorgeous Cape Cod gives you that summertime feeling. With its classic cedar shakes and charming New England interiors, this home is year-round stunning.
Thanks so much for stopping by today! We hope its terrific!
“The fabulous book, Slightly South of Simple, was officially released April 25th. And it is the best summertime read! Reading a truly good book is one of my most luxurious pleasures. This new book is the first of three. And you will fall in love with the women in this book. The characters are just like all of us. Women who aren’t perfect, but try their best to make each day the best they can.” —Lidy, French Garden House
One of the things we love most about Atlanta is the variety of ways to live. From sprawling estates to the chicest of uptown city living, there is an incredible mix that suits every style and taste.
This gorgeous Atlanta condo by our friend Andrew J. Howard is a perfect example of classic city living done right.
The pied-e-terre might be classically associated with Paris or New York but this chic Atlanta condo feels like just that. Georgia is the Empire State of the South, after all. (It’s amazing what you learn while researching for a series set in Georgia!)
In our humble opinions, Andrew Howard is one of the best of the best when it comes to mixing color and pattern to create a certain feel. In this smaller space, a more subdued color scheme creates a calming yet fun environment.
Here, pattern on the ceiling contributes a touch of whimsy to this beautiful bedroom retreat. This color scheme is perfection–and far from boring.
We’re not sure who else could have combined all of these patterns to create this cohesive look, but, in the hands of Howard, the results are incredible. We love the agate slices on the wall for bringing a touch of the outdoors in.
Even the smallest spaces in this Atlanta condo are perfectly choreographed.
A mix of calming neutrals creates the perfect soothing space for waking up slowly and getting ready to face the day ahead.
The magnificent city view doesn’t hurt either. Even in this tiny outdoor space, Howard remains true to his design scheme and creates a chic and comfortable look perfect for sipping and stargazing. For bringing big style to a smaller place, we think this lovely Atlanta space hits the high notes of style. Thanks, Andrew, for letting us share with our readers!
And thanks, Atlanta, for the warm welcome on the Slightly South of Simple tour. From an amazing event at Boxwoods to a brunch with friends at the Piedmont Driving Club, talking to readers at FoxTale Book Shop and Bookmiser and dinner at Le Bilboquet (with, let’s be honest, just a hint of shopping in between!) it was a fabulous couple of days!
“MY GOOD BLOGGER FRIEND KRISTY HARVEY JUST RELEASED HER THIRD BOOK “SLIGHTLY SOUTH OF SIMPLE”….NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR ELIN HILDERBRAND SAYS KRISTY IS A “MAJOR VOICE IN SOUTHERN FICTION”…AND IN MY OPINION, KRISTY IS THIS GENERATION’S PAT CONROY. –Lucy Williams, Interior Designer
“Harvey’s devotion to realistic character development pays off by the end of the novel, which provides clear resolutions to some plots and leaves other hanging in a way that practically begs for a sequel…because Harvey is meticulous about closing out each character’s arc in a satisfying way….SLIGHTLY SOUTH OF SIMPLE is so warm, inviting and real…”—Bookpage
