In Good Taste: Barbara Westbrook Interior Design

Good morning, chic readers. We hope your week is off to a wonderful start. We don’t know about you, but we are dreaming of Memorial Day. All those white dresses and seersucker suits, not to mention sunshine and pool time.

Barbara Westbrook living room

Here, there’s a big band party and dinner to mark the occasion, not to mention cookouts and beach time, boating, a parade. We know it’s not the official start of summer, but it feels that way all the same.

Barbara Westbrook living room

This bright, airy room feels perfect for summer and is the epitome of Barbara Westbrook’s good taste. The perfectly worn rug and those welcoming Carolina blue shutters might be our favorite parts… Although it’s hard to choose, isn’t it?

Barbara Westbrook dining

Dining rooms often feel too open to us, a little bit empty and formal. This one is as warm and welcoming as the friends we can imagine around it!

Rustic beams, wood cabinets and dark floors make this kitchen feel cozy and intimate, the perfect place for a long chat over a good cup of coffee.

Barbara Westbrook kitchen

Wide plank floors have to be one of the best kitchen flooring options of all time. Whether a house is old or new they add that instant feeling of history and age–the graceful kind, of course.

Barbara Westbrook kitchen

This is the inspiration photo dream kitchens are made of! Plenty of room for food prep, storage, setting a fabulous table… This kitchen has it all!

For large kitchens, we adore this double island look. One for eating, one for food prep. It’s perfect!

Barbara Westbrook bathroom

Black and white is one of our favorite color combos, of course. Shades of gray only up the ante!

We’ve always loved a little glamour in the bathroom. Pretty metallics and an accent chandelier fit the bill perfectly.

This is exactly what we were talking about! The kind of scene Memorial Days were made for.

Wishing you a little sand in your toes–and a copy of Slightly South of Simple in your hand–this Memorial Day weekend!

What Design Bloggers are Saying about Slightly South of Simple:

“I have to rave a little bit about Kristy Woodson Harvey’s books…they have honestly turned into my favorite books to curl up with and just get lost in. I recently just read her newest book, Slightly South of Simple {click here to see review} and I was captivated by the character relationships that develop throughout the story, how I was able to relate to the characters, and be transported to a different state through her writing. All of Harvey’s books just ooze with southern charm, emotion, and interesting family dynamics.” –Lauren, A Touch of Southern Grace

There’s nothing like a stunning vignette and a clear blue sea to make us dream of the beach.

Alyssa Rosenheck

And when we dream of the beach, what else to we dream of? Why, beach reading, of course!

We can’t believe that Slightly South of Simple is releasing tomorrow officially. It will be on the shelves at your favorite local bookstores, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Target, on Amazon and wherever books are sold.

These gorgeous images capture that perfect relaxed beach feel–the one I hope readers also get from Slightly South of Simple–perfectly.

Pink and blue is a favorite, classic color combination, one that we were so excited to see on my new book cover!

The pictures really don’t do it justice. This is one of those books we’d buy just for the cover! (Even if I didn’t happen to write it…)

This cozy beach house room is just the kind of place we’d like to spend a pretty post-spring break afternoon.

Today we’re in Kinston, NC at a fabulous home, celebrating Slightly South of Simple and raising money for the local Lenoir County SPCA.

Even though there’s nothing we’d rather be doing than supporting a cause close to our hearts, this picture is awfully tempting…

If you’re looking ahead to your own beach reading…

This is your last day to pre-order Slightly South of Simple before it releases tomorrow!

What are the chances I would have worn a hot pink dress in my author photo? Maybe I was trying to conjure a pink-and-blue book cover!

In Good Taste: Summer Thornton Interior Design

Summer Thornton

Last week, we had the best time touring one of the most incredible dental offices (that did not look like a dental office at all) designed by Summer Thornton.

This week, we’re going outside the office and checking out Summer’s good taste inside the home.

One of our favorite things about Summer’s designs is her use of color.

Each room feels fresh, light, bright and never overdone. We love yellow! And we really love a chaise. So the combination of the two couldn’t be better.

This is an example of how a statement light fixture can totally transform a room.

The color of this bar cart is phenomenal. All of the touches in this room are totally luxurious.

This is black and white done right. Summer transformed this nook into a destination.

A gold fume hood? Yes please!

Who thinks of a stairwell as a fun cheery spot you don’t want to leave? We sure don’t! But this stairwell is that and more.

Now, this is a closet! Is there a better combination than hot pink and leopard?

It seems like stunning closets might be a Summer Thornton specialty!

A luxurious bathroom is such a treat!

What a sweet little girl’s room!

Talk about a nursery that grows as he does! Well, they might have to get him a little bigger car eventually… But, otherwise, it’s perfection! Don’t you love the good taste of Summer Thornton? We knew you would! Thank you so much for making Design Chic a part of your day.

Four Poster Beds Add Style to Any Bedroom

Heather Chadduck Interiors | Emily Followill Photography

Good morning, chic readers! We hope you had a terrific weekend and are ready to start a wonderful week ahead. We don’t know about you, but we love Valentine’s Day. Or not even really the day so much as the whole Valentine’s season.

Kate Marker Interiors|Stoffer Photography

All the red and pink and gold glitter hearts and chocolate and wine everywhere. Everything for Valentine’s Day is so cute and chic and stylish now. This bedding is the perfect Valentine’s Day red…

Serena & Lily

And this one is the perfect Valentine’s Day pink! We still remember being kids and and coming home with a huge bag full of paper Valentine’s sporting sappy sayings, some with candy, some with other Valentine’s trinkets. You never knew what you were going to find. It was wonderful!  What’s even better is the fabulous four poster beds. We don’t think many things add a sense of presence in a room quite like a substantial bed. French provincial four poster beds add old world elegance to a bedroom’s decor.

Lisa Furey Interiors

Black with a touch of gold is an ever-elegant combination that adds so much style to a bedroom.

Are you a fan of four poster beds? Wishing you a wonderful Valentine’s Day, no matter what you’re doing!

In Good Taste:Park and Oak Design

Even their name conjures good feelings. Park and Oak Design. It sounds like a firm that brings the outdoors in. That creates simple yet beautiful design schemes that feel totally livable.

It’s kind of like judging a book by its cover. You’re really not supposed to but, sometimes, the cover does give you a really accurate glimpse into what the book is about.

In this case, we judged a firm by its name. And like that book cover, it did give us a pretty accurate glimpse into what was to come.

If we had to pick one word to describe Oak and Park Design, we think we’d choose… airy. (It’s hard to choose one word, especially when you’re used to getting 85,000 to describe things.)

There’s a minimalistic air about this firm’s work that we find incredibly appealing and totally refreshing.

A modern streak runs through all of these designs that pairs well with traditional touches.

And you know how we love our subway tile!

We love how simple this kitchen is. You can never go wrong with black, white and a touch of natural fiber.

It took us a while to warm up to the idea, but we are now big fans of mixing metals. This kitchen is case and point!

These pendants are perfection.

Speaking of pendants, this is one of our favorites. It’s even more stunning in real life!

Saarinen tables are always a favorite. Sleek, modern and totally functional, they’re a great pick for a breakfast room, especially one that isn’t huge.

The right combination of high and low, rustic and modern, this gorgeous bathroom is the perfect mix of favorite elements blended together in just the right way.

A great wallpaper can totally make a bathroom. We love the vintage feel of this marble sink. The simplicity of these fixtures is a perfect complement to the fun wallpaper. All in all, we think you’ll agree that the work of Park and Oak is in good taste. Which is your favorite room?

We hope you’re having a great day and staying warm!
