Things We Love: Classic Canopy Beds

When I was a little girl, one of my friends had a canopy bed. Sleepovers at her house were always so cozy, and I thought that canopy was amazing. So amazing, in fact, that I asked Santa to bring one for my American Girl Doll.

It never really occurred to me that I could ask him to bring me one for myself!

But, now that I’m all grown up, I get how Santa works much, much better.

And why should Samantha (my American Girl Doll) have all the fun?

So, guess what?

Now I have a canopy bed of my very own!

(And now I want a chaise at the end of it too. And an Hermes blanket, obviously. I didn’t need to even say that, did I?)

I went back and forth and back and forth over the curtain situation. I knew I wanted them, at least some of the time, so that I could feel cozy like those sleepovers of yore. So I decided to go with curtains on the corners like this. And they really close!

I tried it one time just to see if they would, but, no big shock here, I’ve never actually closed them again…

Canopy beds like these are so incredibly chic and make the ceiling look like it goes on for miles and miles.

But, well, I was raised to be leery of anything germ or dust-catching. (Thanks, Mom.) And while, as a kid, I could look up at that fabric on the ceiling and think it was really cool, now I’d be looking at it thinking, “Hmmm, wonder if it’s time to take the down and have it dry cleaned again.”

While I ended up going with a drapery fabric in the end, sheer material also seemed like a drapey and romantic way to adorn a canopy bed. (Plus, if you’re sleeping with the windows open during mosquito season, just downright practical.)

And, even when the curtains are being cleaned (often), the plain canopy bed is elegant and adds so much pizazz to the room. From American Girls to little girls and all the way on up, this is one chic bedroom staple with staying power!

8 Tips for Creating a Relaxing Bedroom Design

bedroom
Suzanne Kasler

Good morning, chic readers! We hope you are having a fabulous day! With Halloween behind us, we feel like now is the time that the sprint to the holidays begins. We don’t know about you, but we absolutely cannot wait! But we know the flurry of activity can be exhausting, which is why it’s more important than ever to make sure that your bedroom is a relaxing haven. Check out a few of our favorite tips for creating a relaxing bedroom retreat!

  1. Invest in cozy covers. With cooler temperatures rolling in, we love nothing more than adding a warm, fluffy comforter to the bed and curling up.

2. Create a cozy reading spot. Darker, cooler days mean less time more spent outside–and more time snuggled indoors with a favorite book or movie. Having a beautiful space to indulge in some much needed relaxation time is such a bonus in a bedroom.

3. Let in lots of light

4. And find a pretty way to block out extra light when the time comes.

5. Bring the outside in with flowers, fresh foliage or even a whimsical nod to Mother Nature like this adorable owl.

6. Warm yourself by the fire. Nothing creates a fabulous, relaxing bedroom quite like a roaring fire on a cold evening or morning. It makes getting out of bed so much easier. And the good news is that there are so many chic, easy-to-install options, your home doesn’t have to be born with a fireplace to have one now.

7. Find the perfect bed. Obviously, the right bed, is one of the very most important parts of any pretty bedroom. It’s the reason we’re there to begin with! Form is, of course, as important as function.

8. Keep the accessories sparse. We love a good accessory as much as the next girls, but, sometimes a cluttered nightstand can lead to a cluttered mind. For a restful night, we’d say, less is more.

Few places in the home are as important as the master bedroom.

It is the place the day begins and ends, and, by all accounts, should be a place of pure relaxation and rest.

Gorgeous throw pillows make a bed terribly inviting. And the layered look of wallpaper and fabric makes a smaller space really sing.

A generally streamlined and uncluttered appearance helps facilitate that all-important relaxation, especially when combined with soothing paint colors.

The right lights can help set a restful tone. And all of these things are fabulously wonderful. But, in reality, they don’t matter much if one thing in the master isn’t right: the mattress. The point of creating the restful retreat, a sanctuary to escape from the outside world, is so that, when you slide under the covers and turn off the light, you get a good. night’s. sleep.

A room can look as beautiful as can be. But, let’s face it, that stunning artwork probably isn’t going to do much to guarantee that elusive good night’s sleep that we’re all after. But, the ComforPedic iQ From Beautyrest? We can attest that it is one of the most comfortable mattresses we have ever slept on. The only mattress endorsed by health and wellness expert and founder of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, Dr. Andrew Weil, this mattress actually relieves pressure on the body and continuously reacts and adapts as you change positions during the night with its patented Smart Response Technology. Plus, Ultra Cool Memory Foam keeps you the right temperature all night long. (Because waking up with sweaty hair does not qualify as beauty rest!) And study participants spent less time lying awake, fell asleep two times faster, and spent more time in REM sleep than in their own, relatively new mattresses. It’s no wonder this mattress is used by millions in hotels and hospitals worldwide. This mattress is one company’s response to America’s sleep epidemic — and it seems to be a good answer!

bedroom

I’m a little jealous because Mom and Dad got one of these beauties. (It even looks cool, right? None of those creepy roses of days gone by…) But they needed it because my dad has a horrible back. He’s always getting new mattresses and trying new things to help him be able to sleep through the night and wake up with less back pain. And even he noticed a difference using the ComforPedic iQ. He’s a back sleeper, Mom is a stomach sleeper, and the Smart Response Technology was able to react and adapt to every move that either one of them made all night long. No buttons, motors or gadgets. Just pure, smart comfort. ComforPedic iQ is the only clinically tested mattress that combines self adjusting technology and better memory foam and the only clinically tested mattress that automatically adjusts to your body without motors or electronics. And it’s designed and built right here in the U.S.!

Now, truth be told, they aren’t sure if they spent more time in REM sleep (Sounds pretty scientific… We’re not sure we have that equipment.) but they both said they fell asleep faster, woke up less and felt more refreshed in the morning. And that’s good. Because hitting the snooze button ten times isn’t the ideal way to start the day. (And all that beeping wakes up your kids!) So, if you’re feeling less-than-refreshed, check it out! A good night’s sleep can transform the entire day.

However you started your day, we hope it ends beautifully! (With a good night’s sleep!)
