Now that spring is officially here, we are looking forward to warmer weather, plenty of travel–and, of course, lots of guests!
Living at the beach, it seems that when the weather changes, suddenly everyone wants to come visit. And we can’t think of anything better! Check out a few of our favorite tips for creating a lovely room that your guests will never want to leave!
Invest in cozy bedding. Nothing says “welcome” to your guests like cozy, comfy bedding.
2. If there’s room, add a chair–or two! It’s so nice for guests to have a spot for relaxing right in the privacy or comfort of their own room.
3. Think about their comfort. When it comes to sleep, few things are as important as the mattress! We always suggest sleeping in your own guest room every now and then to see how it would be to be a guest in your home. If the mattress isn’t up to par, it might be time to upgrade. Check this fabulous selection–including the Bedding Mart family bed!
4. Keep it clutter free. A few well-placed accessories are more than enough when it comes to guest rooms. We don’t want to overwhelm our guests with personal mementos and too many accessories.
5. That said, it’s always nice to provide guests with all the essentials they’ll need! A stack of fresh towels, shower essentials and a water pitcher are all nice touches.
6. Include a few favorite reading materials–books, magazines, today’s newspaper–in case guests have a bit of downtime. Bonus points for this fabulous reading nook!
7. If there’s room, there’s nothing we love more than a desk in a guest room. We’re all so connected these days that it’s hard to totally unplug and a desk gives guests a place to sneak in a few minutes of work without any interruptions.
8. Footboards are great, but not every bed has one. When faced with a bed with no footboard, we love the look of a bench at the end of the bed. A chaise or a pair of chairs is also a great complement and gives guests a spot to sit and read, watch TV or simply put on their shoes!
We don’t know about you, but these gorgeous guest rooms have us ready to do a little entertaining of our own! What’s your favorite way to make your guests feel at home?
My latest novel, THE SECRET TO SOUTHERN CHARM, releases on April 3, right in the thick of Spring Break! And, Southern Living just named it one of its “Best Spring Break Reads.” Hooray! Now is the perfect time to preorder!
Good morning, chic readers! It’s here, it’s here! Serena & Lily’s Friends and Family 20% off sale. You could say we are a tiny bit excited…. We love all that is Serena & Lily (We know you do too!) and, there is no better time than their annual sale for a quick coastal spruce, right?
Whether you live at the coast, have a beach house or are simply looking to add a little bit more of that coastal vibe into your house (vacation all the the time, anyone?) Serena & Lily is the one-stop shop for all that is fabulously coastal without being kitschy. If you’re looking to add a little beach to your life, check out what we did!
Serena & Lily in the Bedroom:
You know how sometimes you move somewhere and you get like 90% finished with everything and you just run out of steam? There’s no doubt that decorating can be a total joy. But it’s also a creative process and it can just burn you out. We were sort of like that with this guest room in our Beaufort house. We loved this gorgeous shell console and had the beginnings of a nice guest bedroom. We just needed to add in a few coastal touches!
One of our favorite looks is a bed with no footboard–and something fun at the end. A chaise, a pair of chairs and a bench are all nice choices. For us, nothing could top this stunning Shore Bench from Serena & Lily.
It’s perfect for a guest room in particular because it gives guests a place to sit to read, watch TV or simply put on their shoes. Isn’t it the perfect touch? Just add a Monaco throw in a beachy color, a couple Sarasota pillows and voila! Your guests will never want to leave!
This little area in the guest bedroom was particularly troubling. It needed a console, desk or table that fit the space and a lot of pizazz!
After looking at consoles and tables and chests and desks, we decided to go with something a little bit different… a bar cart! In this case, the South Seas Bar Cart from Serena and Lily. We love using pieces we love in ways that are a little bit unexpected. Here, styled with favorite books and accessories, this bar cart becomes perfect for a bedroom. (And, hey, you can always roll it out for a party!) We love a little height and, for a space that can’t have a lamp, this vase works well.
But we think this Artichoke Table Lamp takes the cart to a whole new level! A previously neglected chimney wall becomes a focal point–with plenty of coastal flair! Plus, we love adding extra light wherever we can.
Bedding is paramount, of course. In a guest room and especially a guest room on the coast, we love keeping things light and bright. The detail on the Savoy Embroidered Duvet Cover and Shams adds interest while maintaining that relaxing, airy feel. These linens are positively luscious! (Read: Our guests will never want to leave!)
Serena & Lily in the Kitchen:
Of all the rooms in this remodel, the kitchen was by far the biggest transformation. With seven layers of linoleum, no island, no windows and 1960s appliances, it needed some help. We loved the remodel, but it needed a little something.
It’s amazing how just one tiny element can completely change the look of a room–and add so much coastal chic style! The Riviera Counter Stool in natural is just that extra touch that made this kitchen feel like, well, a day at the beach! The stools added much-needed warmth, perfect for spring. We can see flip flops and sandy towels in this kitchen’s future!
Serena & Lily in the Bathroom:
My son’s bathroom upstairs was another case of major renovation and salvation. Converted from a closed-in upstairs porch to a bright, sunny spot for a little boy was so much fun.
Nothing says “coastal” quite like teak. This darling Teak Step Stool is pretty and practical, making it easy to reach the sink.Rope baskets are the ultimate in coastal touches. The large one makes a perfect dirty clothes hamper!
Serena & Lily in “Blogging Central”:
This converted laundry and storage room is actually one of the most-used spaces in the house. Little Will does art and homework there and these chaises with lucite trays are perfect for working. The Brahms’s Mount Herringbone Throws at the end of the chaises are absolutely stunning, give a finished look and feel–and were one of the first things we ever bought for the house. That just goes to show that, when you get your “before” right, with gorgeous pieces from Serena & Lily, you don’t even need an “after!”
If you are looking to add a hint of coastal style to your space, Serena & Lily’s 20% off sale is not to be missed! Let us know what you pick–and we’d love to see how you use Serena & Lily in your coastal home makeover!
Good morning, chic readers! We hope you had the best weekend and are rested and refreshed for a great week ahead. (Or are using the week to rest for another fun weekend… Either way!)
We are so excited about Valentine’s Day this week. We love pink and champagne and chocolate, so it’s really kind of an ideal holiday, Hallmark-created or not. Plus, we love having a reason to celebrate!
Speaking of celebrating, with February halfway over, we are already thinking about a Spring full of celebrations.
Baby showers, engagement parties, book club events… There’s so much to look forward to–and Best Prices for Furniture is going to help us get ready for all of it!
Shoppers have compared Best Prices for Furniture to the “Easy button” for furniture.
It’s easy to see why. Best Price for Furniture combines hundreds of brands in one place and is set up so that many well-established dealers compete for your business by offering the lowest price, saving you hundreds or even thousands on those pieces you’ve been coveting!
The only hard part is choosing which pieces to get first!
If you suspect your Valentine might be a little behind on his or her shopping, now is a great time to get a quote and drop a little hint–in the form of a Best Prices for Furniture quote right in their inbox! When it comes to the gifts we receive, we like to leave little room for error.
Bar stools, a bench for the end of the bed and a desk for a soon-to-be office are just a few of the things we’re working on right now. What’s on your renovation wishlist?
Thanks for stopping by today, chic readers. We hope your Monday is marvelous!

So many details go into making a bedroom feel warm, cozy, restful and relaxed.
The linens, of course, are critical.
The curtains are key.
And, if you’re lucky enough to have a sitting area, making it comfortable and spa-like is a priority.
Right now, one of the things we’re looking for is a fabulous bench for the end of a bed. Well, at least we thought we wanted a bench… But now that we see this loveseat we might be rethinking things since this one is so charming! Furthermore, Phoebe Howard always gets it right!
The great thing about the end-of-the-bed bench is that so, so many things work really well.
A pair is charming and sweet–and perfect for two people to put their shoes on in the morning.
If you’re not the curl-up-in-bed-and-watch-TV type, a little settee is another great spot to watch or read or relax before turning in…
While a small bench at the end of a twin bed gives a finished touch, especially when you don’t want to use a footboard, we love trunks for toy storage at the end of twins as well!
I have a little French bench in a fun fabric like this at the end of my canopy bed. Don’t these chairs look positively luscious? Pale pink is such a soothing accent color for a bedroom.
It seems like the fun–and really, really hard–thing about picking seating for the end of a bed is that you really can’t go wrong! These little leather director’s stools are so charming. We love, love them for a boy’s bedroom, or a guest bedroom like this one. With all these choices, we were originally thinking of doing an upholstered stool at the end of the guest bedroom bed, but, taking the TV watching into account, now we’re thinking about something a little more comfortable because of all these great rooms.
What would you choose–or did you choose–for the end of your bed?
