House Tour: Georgian Style in Alabama

For many, the idea of a complete design and build is fraught with panic, fear and frustration.

But when designer Caroline Gidiere and her husband Stephen discovered that the Mountain Brook, Alabama Home they had purchased was a tear-down, they didn’t blink an eye.

Instead, Gidiere knew immediately what she wanted architect James F. Carter to build in its place.

A nod to the George Wythe house in Williamsburg, where Gidiere spent many a childhood vacation, this stunning Georgian is a study in symmetry and balance, which Gidiere told Veranda “massages something deep in (her) brain.”

Bright and inviting,

And traditionally eclectic,

Not a single detail was overlooked in this home’s happy interior.

Gidiere set out to design a home well-suited for family and entertaining, and it seems that she created just that.

Architectural details that shine,

Outdoor spaces that sing,

And gardens that Stephen Gidiere personally prunes, clips and trims,

Combine to make a true home that is as well-tended and lush on the outdoors as it is inside.

When Gidiere began this project, she was still an attorney. But, through this process it became clear that interiors were her true passion.

Which goes to show that the best homes, like the best experiences, are always teaching us about the person we are meant to be.

Things We Love: Fabulous Outdoor Lanterns

Coats Homes

One of our favorite things is getting emails and questions from our readers. It gives us so much blog fodder and lets us know what’s on your minds.

Thomson Cooke

We’ve noticed lately that outdoor lanterns have been a hot topic of discussion, which is great, because we’re wanting to discuss too!

Ike Kligerman Barkley

In searching for the perfect lanterns for a client, for ourselves and for all of you, of course, we have come across so many fabulous things.

Coastal Living

When it comes to choosing outdoor lanterns, everyone has an opinion. Some swear that lanterns should be only 1/5 of the height of the door, others land more on the 1/4 to 1/3 mark. This is one time where we’re on the bigger is better side of things. (Although, you know we love statement lighting in general, so this probably isn’t a surprise!)

T.S.Adams Studio

Of course, sometimes a pair of lanterns flanking a door simply won’t do. And thinking outside the box can be so glamorous. We are swooning over this lantern!

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles 2019 Show House
Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles 2019 Show House

Matching sets can be so chic,

The Enchanted Home – Palmetto Bluff

And our friend Tina from the Enchanted Home always gets it right. (Of course, we’re biased because we have these same lanterns in brass!)

T.S. Adams Studios

The Governor from Bevolo (We know you’re going to ask, so we’re getting ahead of it!) is one of our favorite styles lately,

Studio McGee

And nothing–absolutely nothing–is as elegant and lovely to us as real gas lanterns. They’re a welcoming touch all the time!

Studio McGee

What is your favorite outdoor lantern style?

House Tour: Steeped in History in Greenwich, Ct

There is something about a white house with black shutters (bonus for a slate roof!) that draws us right in. Every time.

And, in the case of this Old Greenwich home, we’re certainly glad it did.

Merging the past and present with considerable aplomb,

This is a home that wows with style, but is still comfortable enough for the whole family.

Beautiful built-ins in the family room,

Blend in harmony with the gorgeous kitchen cabinets, creating just another touch that makes this home feel seamless and cohesive.

This lovely desk takes full advantage of the stunning view beyond the windows, making this the ultimate writers’ retreat.

This is giving me major excitement about getting back into my house. We’ve reset the tub to take maximum advantage of the view. I can’t wait to be soaking just like this!

We just love the way the hardwood floors lead out onto the slate onto the grass and into the water. The transition is perfection!

There is absolutely no doubt that outdoor design is just as important–if not more important–than indoor decor, especially with a yard and view as stunning as this.

We can’t imagine a more peaceful spot for relaxing at the end of a long day. Wishing you blue skies and calm seas just like this today!

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day. We love it when you stop by!

Add a Coastal Touch with Serena & Lily

coastal design with Serena & Lily

Good morning, chic readers! If you’ve been following along, you might know that I have been on book tour for my new novel, The Southern Side of Paradise, for the past three and a half weeks. I have had an absolute blast, but am so excited to get a couple day break to go home for Memorial Day weekend! It’s officially beach season, and I live at the beach, so the timing couldn’t be better!

Our Hurricane Florence renovations have been going on for the past nine months or so, and we are seeing a light at the tunnel and are so looking forward to moving back in soon. Going home has us dreaming of replacing what we lost and getting ready for what is, in our opinion, the most fun season! A great start? This gorgeous foyer table. Classically chic with a touch of coastal, it doesn’t get better!

Serena & lily - blue and white- coastal living room

To us, there’s no more important room than the living room. From family TV nights to cocktail parties, we use ours every day. Have a versatile, durable, and, of course, chic coffee table at the center of it all is a vital part of this all-important space.

coastal breakfast room from Serena & Lily with wicker chairs and a round dining table

We love a gorgeous breakfast room, and this one practically shouts, “Good morning!” With the sun beaming through the windows, this is the perfect place to gather around the dining table to greet the day–and the chairs are the perfect touch of coastal chic.

coastal dining room from Serena & lily with Riviera chairs

Of course, whether to eat in the breakfast room or this gorgeous dining room would be a touch choice. The fabulous chandelier, stunning but streamlined, ties the room together.

coastal bedroom with Serena & Lily

To us, coastal style in the bedroom requires nothing more than crisp, clean, white bedding. This is too pretty for words–and the touch of sea blue ties the look together.

bathroom with coconut shell chandelier and wicker stool from Serena & Lily

Nothing punctuates a bathroom quite like Serena & Lily towels. And this tiny table? Perfection! Have we mentioned that we are swooning over this coconut shell chandelier? Take it from us, it’s even more gorgeous in real life!

bedroom and wicker bench with Serena & lily with gallery wall

We had the best time on this “before & after” Serena & Lily collaboration at our house. Unfortunately, this room is gutted… But we’re hoping to be “after” ready again soon!

bathroom with Serena & lily stool

This laundry basket and stool were two of our favorite parts of last year’s Serena & Lily Collaboration. Fortunately, we were able to salvage both of them!

porch sitting with Serena & lily wicker furniture and chandeliers

If coastal style is welcome indoors, it’s almost mandatory outdoors. We love everything about this beautiful porch!

Dining alfresco with Serena & Lily with slipcovered chairs

Dining al fresco has never looked so good!

poolside with Serena & lily - pool umbrella and wicker chaise lounge

Just one more day until we’re relaxing poolside… and we’re only days away from Serena & Lily’s Memorial Day Sale too! For all you style needs–especially your coastal ones–no one does it better. (And, we don’t know about you, but we can’t resist a sale!) The Memorial Day Sale will be open to the public 5/22-5/28. Everything will be on sale with code SUMMERPREP, excluding final sale, gift certificates, art, and the limited-edition PUBLIC® C7 Bike. Don’t miss it!

At Serena & Lily, living well (and summer!) begins at home!

Thanks so much for making Design Chic a part of your day. We always love it when you stop by! Happy Memorial Day Weekend, friends!

Good morning, chic readers! We are CELEBRATING today because, today, my fifth novel and the final book in my Peachtree Bluff Trilogy, The Southern Side of Paradise, releases!

After more than a year of writing, editing, promoting and, yes, picking the cover, it is so exciting to see the book come to life out in the world.

As you might imagine, I am a very visual person, so covers mean a lot to me.

I am so fortunate that my cover designer at Simon & Schuster is a genius–and came up with more than a dozen too-gorgeous-to-be-believed covers for me to choose from. I had the hardest time deciding which one fit the story best!

palm beach style with color
Meg Braff Design

Ultimately, it came down to something pretty simple: the yellow. The cover I chose has a yellow hat and a yellow title, and, I don’t know about you, but I am loving yellow lately.

That yellow is combined with the perfect hot pink…

And the most serene water blue…

I sent this Gray Malin photo for cover inspiration. Water, sand, vibrant hues. It just feels like summertime, doesn’t it?

Like this. I wanted a cover that would make my readers feel like this

And these are the bright, bold hues to do it.

The Southern Side of Paradise

I think they nailed it, don’t you? If these aren’t the colors of paradise, then I don’t know what are. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all your support of my books, The Peachtree Bluff Series and, of course, Design Chic! Mom and I love being here with you every day, and we can’t thank you enough for spending a few minutes of your day with us for NINE YEARS!

If you are looking for a Mother’s Day gift or your next beach read, I’d love it if you’d check out The Southern Side of Paradise! It is available from your local bookstore and wherever books are sold, including:

Things We Love: Diane James Home

 Diane James Home flowers

It would really be more appropriate to title this post “Things and People We Love.” Because as much as we love the beautiful shop, Diane James Home, and The Buzz Blog that is connected to it, we love it’s owners and authors, twins Carolyn and Cynthia, even more!

 Diane James Home flowers

They were some of our very first blog friends when we started Design Chic, have been an endless source of support and inspiration, and even brought gorgeous blue hydrangeas for everyone at the beyond beautiful blogger luncheon our fabulous friend Tina from The Enchanted Home hosted for the launch of my novel Slightly South of Simple last year. (If you’ve read it, you’ll get why those flowers were so important!)

 Diane James Home flowers

You know we love flowers. Love and adore them and can’t get enough of them. And we know that you do too.

 Diane James Home flowers

But, sometimes it has been freezing cold for what seems like forever (like now!), or you’re allergic to flowers or you hate the mess the make or you can’t keep them alive for longer than a half hour…

 Diane James Home flowers

But that’s where sweet Cynthia and Carolyn and their beautiful line for Diane James Home come in.

 Diane James Home flowers

Because they have an endless variety of gorgeous blooms that won’t die, won’t need watering… And here’s the clincher: They look exactly like the real thing.

It’s quite astonishing, actually.

 Diane James Home flowers

Their new Spring Watercolors Collection might be their most beautiful yet. And we don’t know about you, but, if we are going to make it until spring actually arrives, we are going to need some beautiful blooms in our lives!

 Diane James Home flowers

Not only are they stunning for your own home–indoors or out–but Diane James Home florals make the perfect gift. We’re loving them for the upcoming wedding season. Because, honestly, the bride is probably getting tired of dinner plates.

 Diane James Home flowers

From topiaries to bouquets, greenery to orchids that you don’t have to get that ice cube trick right to keep alive, these ladies have it all. (And, yes, you can have it delivered! We know. Life is good!)

 Diane James Home flowers

And, did we mention? They’re gorgeous twins! We don’t know about you, but these beautiful blooms have made us feel oh so inspired. What about you?

For more about our fabulous friends, follow them over at The Buzz Blog and on Instagram at @diane_james_home

Thanks so much for stopping by today, chic readers!
