Things We Love: Combining Brass and Marble

Brass and marble kitchen of Nate Berkus

Chocolate and peanut butter. Blue and white. Brass and marble. Some couples are just so good together that we can’t imagine them without each other.

We always wonder about that magic moment when two things were first combined and, from then on out, were always better together.

We will probably never know when brass and marble were first combined, but what we do know is that, now that we’ve seen them together, we are totally smitten!

You know that white marble is one of our forever favorites, especially for kitchen counters.

We love how it wears and changes over time, how it becomes something a little bit different as the years go by.The same is true with brass really, in that it starts out shiny and metallic and dulls and ages with time, its beautiful luster becoming a lovely patina.

Maybe that’s why these two staples go together so well.

Like the best couples always do, they change as they age but still complement one another so beautifully.

What Mimosa Lane is saying about Slightly South of Simple:

slightly south of simple

“Kristy explores family bonds  and how they can be put to the test as a a secret from their past that has the potential to tear them apart surfaces. This is Kristy’s third book and I am just so amazed at her imagination that conjures up such beautiful stories and heart-felt stories.  I can envision this one becoming a movie and having maybe Julia Roberts play the mom?” Albertina, Mimosa Lane

Things We Love: Cast Iron Sinks in The Bathroom

Good morning, Design Chicers! It is a beautiful day for a book club luncheon in my lovely hometown of Salisbury, NC. When it’s several book clubs together, all the better! The Slightly South of Simple tour is off to a great start because of book clubs and garden clubs, which we would imagine are some of the oldest and most beloved organizations around.

But, sometimes, there’s really no need to reinvent the wheel.

When you’ve got a good thing going, why not stick with it?

Cast iron sinks have been around almost as long as bathrooms themselves, and their enduring style and timeless attitude is a playful nod to the past, one that Ansley, the interior designer protagonist in Slightly South of Simple would love as she redesigns the historic homes in her town of Peachtree Bluff, Georgia.

Things We Love: White Kitchens

Karr Bick

It’s one of the first places we go in the morning and one of the last places we visit at night. (Especially now when all of that leftover Halloween candy beckons to us from the pantry…)

de Guilio Design

It’s also the place, unfortunately, that the mail gets dropped, book bags get tossed, shoes get left…

Sam Allen Design

Which is terribly ironic since, if you’re like us, it’s the one place that, above all others, must, must be clean and neat and organized.

Muse Interiors

Maybe that’s why we’re so drawn to white kitchens. They lend that instant feel of relaxing, sparse cleanliness. Whether it’s a more modern space…

Or a small but terribly chic spot…

A bright, expansive room with tons of storage…

Or a beautiful kitchen perfectly suited for feeding a family of any size…

When it comes to kitchens, we think white is far, far from basic and boring!

Thank you, thank you or stopping by today! We hope you have a fabulous Thursday!

If you’re looking for a little fall reading, check out Lies and Other Acts of Love or Dear Carolina or preorder Slightly South of Simple! I’m donating 100% of the profits of my books to Mary’s Kitchen in Kinston, NC until November 7 to help victims of flooding in Eastern NC.

In Good Taste: Brady Design

Brady Design living room

The more we see, the more convinced we are that paring down, keeping it simple and coming back to those clean lines is the way to go. With the busyness of everyone’s lives today, the mental clutter and chatter that tends to take over, coming home to something sparse and streamlined is almost a necessity. When it comes to getting back to those basic values, Brady Design is tops. They manage to create rooms that feel at once open, airy and perfectly chic. Every detail is perfectly choreographed so that each space feels like a place we couldn’t wait to come home to. From kitchens that wow to living rooms that stun to master bedrooms that would put us to sleep in the best possible way, one look and you’ll see why we think Brady Design is in good taste.

Swoon, gasp, sigh… Those were just a couple of our reactions when we first saw Matthew Quinn’s handiwork in House Beautiful’s 2016 Kitchen of the Year!
