Amid the busyness in our everyday lives nothing feels more inviting than a room that seems to exhale the moment you enter.  A calm living room welcomes you to sit down and stay awhile. Quiet design rather than fleeting trends is paramount in learning how to create a calm living room.

1. Start With a Neutral Palette

Calm begins with color and neutral is a color. Think warm whites, gentle ivories, soft sand, pale stone, and muted taupes—tones that reflect light. These hues create a visual pause, allowing the eye to rest. The key is layering: a linen sofa against an ivory wall, a wool rug in a slightly darker shade , a throw that subtly contrasts. When you ensure that everything works together, the blend is instantly soothing.Jean Stoffer Interior Design | Stoffer Photography Interior

2. Invite Texture to Talking

A calm living room is never dull. Adding texture from woven baskets, natural fiber rugs, nubby upholstery and beautiful antiques combine to create a room that feels livable rather than sterile.

3. Edit, Edit, Edit

We hear it all the time, but boy is it hard to implement. One of the most overlooked steps in learning how to create a calm living space is editing.  Editing is everything - we always suggest taking away one more piece than you think you need. Negative space is not empty; it’s refreshing. Jean Stoffer Interior Design | Stoffer Photography Interior

4. Choose Inviting Furniture

Calm rooms are meant to be lived so choose pieces that feel welcoming not precious. Think sofas that envelope you, chairs that invite conversation and ottomans for propping your feet.  When a room is easy to live in, its a sanctuary to start and end your day. 5. Bring the Outside In

Nature has an unmatched way of soothing. Add large leafy branches in a vase or a potted olive tree in a corner - even a simple bowl of oranges. Natural light is equally important so keep window treatments light and airy and including a larger mirror across from windows to reflect the outdoor space. Bringing the outdoors instantly relaxes any room. Jean Stoffer Interior Design | Stoffer Photography Interior

6. Layer in Scent and Sound

A fresh smelling candle and your favorite music playing in the background can change a room - slow the pace of the day without you even noticing. Jean Stoffer Interior Design | Stoffer Photography Interior

7. Add Personal Items

Jean Stoffer Interior Design | Stoffer Photography Interior - Above all, a calm living space should reflect you—just not all at once. Add personal items such as books that feel like old friends, family silver,  irreplaceable photos taken during a time when clouds lived in the sky, not on our cell phones and laptops. Collections, if you will, that don’t fall into the “it’s just stuff” category.

Learning how to create a calm living room isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a home that brings serenity and peace the moment you walk through the door. What could be better…

More About SUMMER STATE OF MIND:

“Queen of the beach read,” (CosmopolitanNew York Times bestselling author Kristy Woodson Harvey returns with a heartfelt escape to coastal Carolina.

After the worst day in her professional life, burnt-out NICU nurse Daisy Stevens runs to Cape Carolina, North Carolina, looking for a new life—and possibly new romance. On her first day at her “simpler” job, high school baseball coach Mason Thaysden discovers an abandoned baby, sending ripples through the entire tight-knit town of Cape Carolina.

Mason is still struggling to reconcile the scars of the injury that kept him out of the big leagues, stuck in his hometown, and searching for a way out. This newcomer and the child they’ve saved together might be just the motivation he needs to stay put. Sparks fly as Mason acquaints Daisy with Cape Carolina, introducing her to his friends and family, including his batty Aunt Tilley, who is looking for relief from long-buried family secrets and her own fresh start.

But as Daisy becomes increasingly attached to this abandoned child, and begins facing her own demons in the process, a startling discovery is made that threatens to rip the entire town of Cape Carolina apart, placing Daisy, Mason, and Tilley in the center of the storm. In a novel that proves that “Kristy Woodson Harvey is (the) go-to for elevated beach reads” (People), they will each learn that with love, understanding—and a community theater production of Hello, Dolly!—sometimes life conspires to bring us just exactly where we belong.
